Leather used to be really, really cheap. They increased the need for it to soak up supply.

I’m going to assume you simply misread what the OP asked

Yes, the actual gold value is higher due to leather costing more, but the question is why silk patches require more leather than actual silk

12 silk scraps, vs. 20 thick leather sections. It is hardly a “silk patch”, it’s a “Thick Leather Patch” with silk involved.

I don’t see why it matters. If silk were more expensive than thick leather then this thread would not exist. It comes back to cost.

HoT created patches which required leather which there was a glut of at the time to help decrease the glut. They also upped the cost of a thick square from 3 to 4 sections for the same reason. Glut vanished in weeks.

That’s not true and you know it. Its strange that an item with silk in the name needs more leather than silk.

It is true for the most part. You don’t see threads with people complaining about the number of silk scraps anymore while the cost is almost at vendor value. Players never complaining about the lack of farming mystic coins at launch when they were a silver and yet now they complain after the price exceed 1G.

It always comes back to price. If silk was 1.3 silver and leather were 32 copper, we would not have this thread. We’d then have a thread about silk being too much and so on.

I wouldn’t call a 17 million glut at 9c “flies”. They just didn’t need to implement all the ways to reduce the glut at the same time.

What you are forgetting to mention is that part of the reason that the price of silk is so low right now is because of how expensive leather is. Silk is easier to come by than leather, and you need less of it. Due to the high price of leather, a lot fewer players are crafting right now, which drives demand for silk lower.

And you still haven’t acknowledged the fact that its strange that something with silk in the name needs more leather than it does silk. That’s like making an orichalcum blade that required more iron and gossamer than orichalcum to make. At that point it just doesn’t make sense to call it an orichalcum blade anymore. From his post, OP is genuinely confused about the name of the patch, and not concerned with the price of the mats.

I kinda agree with you. But the size of the cannons that ANet pointed at leather made this glut look like the size of a fly in comparison. So the analogy stands imo

Silk doesn’t just become cheaper because leather becomes expensive. That’s not how it works but if you disagree then please show the correlation.

I did acknowledge it and said along the lines that it wasn’t important. Most components tend to use multiple materials and the ratio of one material to another doesn’t matter. The name doesn’t matter but if it’s such a big issue, suggest Anet change it to leather patch.

It’s okay if the OP is confused about the naming. I went on about price as people tend to not care about things like this if the costs were negligible.

He could be. But he did word it ambiguously enough by asking about cost in the title and then not clearly stating what he meant in the original post that some people could believe he is asking why leather is a predominant cost rather than silk being the most costly item.

He asked about the cost in leather, explicitly. Nothing ambiguous about it. Just another case of people reading what they want to read instead of what is written.

Nope. I didn’t. I was giving a possible reason why many posts on this thread talked about the cost of leather in their answer. The OP said cost of leather in his title and people react to what they read and answer accordingly.

When I read the OP I agree that it is weird that it is named “silk patch”. But my next thought was as others here, that the reason WHY it takes so much leather, was as others has said:

  • Huge amount of leather on the market worth next to nothing

So they made a lot of different things require a lot more leather, in order to empty the market and raise the demand (price) of it.

So obviously this is a large part of the answer. That it is still named “Silk patch” is mostly just Funny Trivia. You also spend more silk than metal in making most heavy armors for example, should we change all Ascended heavy armor to be “Ascended H eavy Cloth Armor with Metal studs and buttons” ?

I really think that had they used my idea, the current issues would have been avoided.

My recommendation was to allow insignias to be created with EITHER leather OR cloth. This would give players the option to craft their insignia with whichever material was currently cheapest helping to maintain a level of price equilibrium between basic crafting materials of the same tier.

I always found it strange but all I can assume is you craft a frame (and possibly a design) out of the leather and fill it in with silk or coat a leather patch in silk.
