I think it is pretty stupid to have a gear set dedicated to farming/playing the game in PVE.

Whenever I do dungeons/Cursed Shore/Fractals/any PVE I can’t even use my real set because I have to use Magic Find to hope for better drops.

I don’t like this farming mentality of a Magic Find set…

IMO the reason they have Magic Find gear in game is to give some sort of a “risk VS Reward” gameplay which other games do in much more serious ways.

How is Magic Find “risk VS Reward” you may ask? Well you take a risk using it if you are in med-high areas (as well as low lvl areas surrounded by many enemies) because you simply can’t survive as long as you can in other armours in tricky situations. The reward being you have a “chance” at getting better drops.

Since when did this business of being a hero become being a business?

We actually don’t have mf. Ever since a month after launch it’s been purposefully (judging by the lack of concern and the lack of response from those in charge) broken to not include chests, to force the opposite of what it would logically be used for to happen.

It’s as completely useless as their system of loot for time spent.

There’s gotta be something for everyone in a good MMORPG, and some enjoy the hunt and success for gear sets. You also have a lot of guffaws along the way if you go with your guilds which I find helps a lot.

And this is where it becomes th real issue.

When some people do their best to have max DPS and survivability while others just have some crappy rares with MF, do zero damage, die in 1 hit and still get better reward.

There’s several threads on this topic.

I’ll give you one example why I think MF is a wasted stat.

Farming out in Frostgorge for an hour for Corrupted Lodestones (not the best place for it, but certainly a lot friendlier than in Orrian areas), I have about 90% MF on armour and weapons totalled, without food or boosters. After that hour of farming with others (not in a group) and my weapon still on 25 stacks of MF (sup. sigil of luck = 0.6% per stack so 15%) I have greens as my best drop, a whole heap of blue stuff, and so much junk it’s not even funny. I figure why bother anymore, I’m not even close to where I should be after one hour of farming.

Luckily, Claw-Lag spawns soon after, firing away on the pact bazooka, etc. etc. downed once just before the chest spawned. Nothing great from the chest as usual… but I didn’t happen to notice the luck sigil counter wasn’t active after the event. Not until I started farming grawl for another hour after. Again, not in any groups just farming with another 2 or 3 in the area at the time. I start pulling in the loot:

  • 6 Large Skulls (yellow rarity)
  • 2 Unidentified Dyes
  • 3 Ancient Bones (Tier 6)
  • 5 Elaborate Totems (Tier 6)
  • 4 yellow rarity weapons
  • 9 Locked Black Lion Chests.

By this time I’m wondering what’s going on. My weapon has 0% MF and it’s only what I’m wearing (which isn’t great) which is less MF than when I started. My next step is to go with just my regular no-MF gear and see what kind of results that produces after an hour of farming. Maybe some exotic drops?

My point is, the way MF works now seems like it’s all backward. Not only are you becoming a softer target but you’re not destined for great drops either, no matter what the dev’s want you to think. A lot of farmers just won’t go for MF now because it just doesn’t work as it should. For those of you who are getting better drops by wearing MF gear, I’m sorry but you’re in the minority.

MF is there so game designers can reduce loot drops and people think they are “beating the system” by going MF set. What it actually means

Scenario 1 No Magic Find:
Rare loot is meant to drop 5% of the time to all players

Scenario 2 Magic Find:
Rare loot is reduced to dropping 1% to all players, and 5% of the time to players with MF

Therefore, magic find in the game means the game is reducing the amount of loot you earn overall, meaning you have to grind more etc. etc.

And this is where it becomes th real issue.

When some people do their best to have max DPS and survivability while others just have some crappy rares with MF, do zero damage, die in 1 hit and still get better reward.

Crappy rares with MF? My ‘farming’ toon is head to toe exotic MF gear with 5 noble runes + 1 pirate run, exotic MF weapons with MF sigil on main hand, all jewelery is exotic or better (cuz I haz ascended ring and karka accessory).

Oh, and because of how I built my toon and the fact that good MF gear is power/precision/MF, I haven’t given up that much DPS versus a glass canon, and I’ll bet between my skill as a player as well as traiting some survivability into my toon, I end up outperforming most of the rest of the members of my PUG parties.

Anyway, all that said, and even though I’m plenty over 150% magic find, it’s been my experience that that only translates to about 3-4 extra rares per dungeon path. It does make running AC all paths as a daily worth doing (which I could actually run naked so it’s not like the crit damage I give up for MF matters one whit), and it adds about the same extra per hour running events in Orr, so while it worth doing, I wouldn’t necessarily go way out of my way to build a toon like this except that I have 8 alts, so going all-in on MF on one was no biggie.

Hey I just met you – And this is crazy –

Gear is not really giving you a big edge in this game. I could buy me a green set without MF for 20 silver and would have the same stats as you with your full exotic MF gear.

The % you lose from going Green instead of Orange with the same stats does not make big of a difference as well.
I personally do not run MF gear because it feels like not performing the best I could, which I dislike.

I said, you do not lose stats if you go green NON-MF vs exotic MF. You make up for the lacking armor with the additional third stat. Do not pin me on that please though, might still lose 2 or 3 armor points, but my point is, this game is so easy, running MF, non-MF, naked will not make you fail a dungeon if you know how to play it.

But I still dislike the whole attitude of MF, that is the reason why I will never use it, as stated above.

This game is all about looks and i have to wear my crappy looking magic find gear 80% of the time…..no thanks.

In my opinion, MF gear is there for trash. When you’re running around Orr node farming or during easy trash in dungeons. However, when grouped with other players for dungeons, use your real gear. Don’t make the group suffer because you want a better drop. The effectiveness of a whole team with full MF gear vs real decked out gear can make the difference between a wipe and a win or a really long drawn out win vs a quick win that gives u more time for another dungeon run.

they should make it so that MF is shared amongst everyone in the party.

Or just remove this stat completely. I honestly don’t see a point in this stat. I mean I don’t see the point why would the devs introduce this stat in the first place. I get why players equip it, though.

This world needs more people being frank and less people being offended.

This is a duplicate of another topic from a month ago… the search feature does work (and then I wouldn’t have to repost the same stuff I already posted )

Anyway it’s a meaningful choice in the game that comes with consequences. MF has a real effect (I can see the difference). If you go with MF you give up 1/3 of your stats on your gear which makes the content more difficult. So again, the choice is meaningful.

My only complaint is some professions have a much easier time giving up 1/3 of their stats for MF. Mesmer is an example. My lvl 80 mesmer could probably walk around naked and still handle open-world PvE content.

Part of me thinks that someone in ANet was thinking “hey, wanna see something funny? Watch this…”

i wanna see mf gear a bit more nerfed than usual gear so that it actually may cosat you to bring it into a dungeon, cause as it is now i feel sometimes like i do 33% of the damage in my party and when i ask they all have mf gear, so nerf the stats on the gear not the mf thos a bit so that it might be to risky to play with it in dungeons but not impossible

The only purpose of MF is to insult the intelligence of your players. Unfortunately there seem to be a lot of people who like being insulted.

Particularly in group situations MF is so ridiculously perverse in the way it works that there is no plausible explanation for it except that devs are having a good joke among themselves about how dumb their players are.

Why on earth should someone be actively REWARDED for bringing bad gear to a dungeon and therefore leeching off everyone else?

You’re not reading what I said. I was referring to just runes. You’re likely referring to armor that has MF as the third stat which I do agree is a waste. If you do ONLY RUNES then it will have a minimal impact on damage output.

Yes, this is the way that it is usually justified. By sacrificing, to some extent, survivability you are rewarded by increased chance to find loot. I personally don’t like the concept whether in Diablo or GW2, but I know others do and it’s not a big issue for me.

May I ask your build/gear? I have full zerkers with a glass cannon build and I never see these numbers. Thanks in advance!

To add to the convo, I do agree that it as a stat appears insulting and I have tried full MF gear/runes/food and none with minimal differences in my average loot gains when tested outside of dungeons in groups. Inside dungeons I have found a more noticeable difference in drop rates with the MF.

Cheers!
