Why do we have 'town clothes'?
I seriously hope that we will get a wardrobe system so we can quickly switch between multiple item sets.
Not having this is actually one of my biggest complaints about this game.
I’d be way more likely to buy the skins in the gem store if I wasn’t limited to 1 per character.

I think it’s a hangover from an earlier plan to have RP style gatherings in town that died.
A second armour slot would be nice but I’d prefer a second weapon set. Both would be wonderful.
Part of the problem with the town clothes implementation is that the game doesn’t automatically switch you to town clothes when you enter a freaking town – it doesn’t even give you the setting option. It certainly is a strange design choice. Why include town clothes at all when no one will ever see them?

they could be the first step to a costume type system like in guild wars 1. at the moment you cant do anything in them but costume brawl, but later they might let you wear them over your armor in PVE and WvW, no PVP or SPVP however
I don’t mind the town clothes, although maybe an auto switch or an easier method to quickly switch when I come into town would be nice. I often forget that I have town clothes.
Of course, there are some ‘town clothes’ which I’d love to have as an armor skin… the pirate outfit (as a medium), the divinity reach npc noble’s outfit (as a light) (my mesmer says ‘gimme now! plz?’), just to name a couple.
I thought it was a good idea till all the goofy skins started spilling over into the armor and weapons. I wish they would have made minis, pink Quaggan backpacks and all the other stuff like that part of the town clothes.
You can always assign a key to switch to clothes when you want.
ArenaNet needs to add about 100 pieces of clothing for each gender in order for town clothing to be of any use, and I don’t mean $10 a piece gemstore stuff. Expanding the availability of free town clothing would make a change in the right direction. Right now, if you choose not to pay any money, everyone has the exact same outfits. As limited as town clothing has been since release, I’m surprised we even have the option to color them.
I think I wore Town Clothes a few times in the first week and have not worn them since.
I guess I just have not found a purpose to do so. There is no real Role Playing in the game other then the type imposed by the players; which seems to be the only useful option for wearing town cloths.
I did find the opportunity to free up 5 bank slots by taking a hat out of the bank and putting it on each of my characters. So I got that going for me…which is nice.
The same reason we have minis …. no good reason what so ever.

Well i use Town Clothes, and there is RP you just need to go/be in a RP server and look around. Though from what I see in the gemstore, some of it is just fluff stuff.Town clothes do have their uses. At least for me they do.

I think by RP style gatherings that died what they meant was low activity based in world RP events. I hate to bring up that game which must not be named but they have festivals and events with tons of activities that don’t require killing anything, sometimes they just require emotes and walking around in certain outfits. Therefore thousands of people gather in areas dressed up for the event and throwing pies at one another, having picnics together, or racing RC cars together. The event itself promotes people gathering in a location and dressing up because of the “lore” of the world.
GW2 has the same, but our events are all heavily activity based and most often involve combat or at the very least the need to activate powers and abilities. so we never end up dressed in our town clothes because the game forces or encourages it. If you remember the Mad king or the Tixx festival people dressed in holiday themed/colored armor, but still very little town clothing because we had to fight and compete still.
I’d like to see a costume tab like in Guild Wars. If you could wear town clothes into combat I’d actually be tempted to buy me some.
It doesn’t help that there aren’t any nice looking town clothes either. Maybe if there was some stuff that actually looked good or cool people would start using them.
As an RPer, the last thing I would want is to be switched to town clothes the minute I enter a city. That would be very immersion breaking.
I’ve spent a lot of time collecting pieces of armour to try and create individual looks and to seem less armour-like, when RPing out of combat.
I would love an wardrobe system like LotRO’s or STO’s.
I lump this all in with the stuff that didn’t make the game like how cool our home instance was supposed to be. They just didn’t fully scrap the ideas and kinda left em half baked. I would be all about being able to wear this stuff over my armor as a cosmetic option. Heck, I would even like it if we had to transmute it to our armor.
I think that town clothes were yet another ambitious plan that was partially developed and which got left at the pier when the ship launched. Except, the town clothes got stuck on the anchor chain and are being dragged along behind the ship, occasionally coming up for air, but mostly forgotten.
