I think this question has been discussed to Cantha and back in every game forum ever. In most cases it boils down to aesthetic reasons of one kind or another, and the most amusing part of that question is that it is this thing that seems to bug the one asking it. I never heard anybody ask “Hey, I know you are a tall guy in real life, so… why do you play an asura?” or “I am pretty sure you are human, so why is your main char a charr?”
Unless you are a roleplayer the answer is always “I like that dude’s style.” and if that dude is female so be it. And if you are a roleplayer the answer is “That is how I imagine the character I want to portray… and I like that dude’s style.”

I RP a lot (when I can), and I pretty much always have at least a vague background in mind when I make a character.

The gender of the character is set by two or three things. One is “does it fit the concept?” Sometimes the concept calls for a specific gender. Other times, one gender just works better than the other.

The second is more complex. I usually put some aspect of myself into the character. This aspect may require the character to be male (like myself), but it may also come out better if the character is female. A side of the character that never gets used or invoked isn’t much use, after all.

If neither one of those decides it for me, then it’s down to minor things. Which looks better in the clothes they’ll have to choose from? What will interact better with the people I’ve been RPing with/near? If all else fails, I’ll make it the gender I have the least of at the time. (I buy both Pokemon games each generation, and I usually play the first one with the male character, second with a female character.)

Not all characters that I make are kept, though. Some catch on and I enjoy them, others just kind of fall to the wayside and I eventually remove them to make something else. My balance is fairly close to even, when it’s all added up.

Male customisation options look like complete kitten, in my opinion. Without trying to make my characters look ridiculous, I can make maybe two human males before they all start to look the same. Besides, with so many alts, some of them have to be female.

I think we are simply having a misunderstanding. It seems you think I’m talking about how they hold the greatsword when sheated (though correct me if I’m wrong). All I said was that asura female characters hold their greatswords upwards (which they do), as in not holding them like a plow like females of all other races do. Since the discussion was about that in the first place I didn’t see the need to specifically state I’m not talking about how they sheate their weapon.

If you’re gonna get all uppity about how people hold stuff, get it right.

No human holds a hand plow behind them. There’s no reason to. So comparing the female GS holding stance to a blow is…I don’t even know. I have no problem with how they hold it though. Considering the size of my female human to her sword, it’d be awkward for her to be holding the thing as if it had no weight. Her holding it slightly down makes it feel like it has weight. It also helps that my Human female is a Ranger so when she does a hilt bash, she’s practically already pointing the hilt right at your face and when she does anything else with it, such as leaping with it, it feels like she’s flinging it and using the weight as momentum.

Comparatively, my Asura warrior looks like his GS is weightless with how he spins and jumps with it (and it’s very awkward how he runs with it or does Rush). That being said, it works for him because he’s an oddity of an Asura, the experimentations done on him making him absurdly strong so he can wield such objects with ease.

But I think it’s time to go back on topic, it’s not like anet will change the animation anyway so I might as well stop discussing this

I like variety and good looking characters. That means if possible, no 2 of my characters should look alike. Not only dressed differently but also look different in face and body. So instead of having 2 characters with same race and same gender, I rather create one male and the other female.
Additionally, I wanted to have at least 1 character from every race (5) and 1 for each class (8).

So I planned my characters before release:

• my Asura must be an Elementalist. An Asura Elementalist should be male, so I created him male.
• for my Norn, I remember some pre-release video with a bad-kitten male norn in there. He was cool. He became my warrior.
• my Sylvari is female, because male Sylvari don’t look good. She became my Necromancer.
• my Charr is male, because female Charr don’t look female enough to create a female Charr. He became my Guardian.
• my Human should become my Mesmer, and a human Mesmer should be female. She also looks more pretty than a male.

This left me with 3 races who got another character.

• no more characters as Charr, because I don’t like Charr that much
• no more charaters as Sylvari, because the second Sylvari would be male (already had one female), and male Sylvari don’t look good.

• my ranger should be Norn, because this seems the best race for her. She is female, because I already have a male Norn.
• my thief should be an Asura, because of her height and body she seems the best choice for a profession that steals things. She is female, because I already have a male Asura.
• my engineer should be a Human. I created the look of a frail and shy woman, but who was clad in steel and throws death and ruin onto her enemies. Oops – a second female human. Well, it’s also because the female human is simply the most pretty crafted character we can play. A male engineer would be somewhat ordinary and not very inspired, so I chose a second female.

This makes 3 male and 5 female characters on my account.
But my main is my male Asura, I play him 80% of the time. The other one I play is the male Charr, which gets the remaining 20%.

If I were to recreate all characters today, I would probably create them again just as they are now.

Most funny, I did not yet chose race and gender for the upcoming Revenant. Perhaps a male human in the end.

I was speaking of a hand plow (the word that gets censored) since it’s the closest thing to a tool shaped like a sword. But if you’re talking about plowing something by dragging something along the ground, it’s quite a hyperbole since the female GS user indeed doesn’t drag it along the ground, just holds it low. Don’t know what kind of dirt you’ve been plowing to do so by hovering over it…maybe moon dust?

You like the way females drag the sword, that’s fine of course, but I would have preferred it if they just carried it the same way males do.

I like how they make it look like the sword feels like there’s weight to it. It’s certainly not obtrusive but then it all comes down to taste.

I often ponder why people have a need to ask this question. I always arrive at the same answer to the OP’s question…

Given a range of choices in a character selection screen, people will click buttons until they get to play the game.

There are some swords that hit the ground but that’s beside the point. The example isn’t perfect yes, but you know what I meant. You don’t have to nitpick it. :P

I’m not a guy, but I want to answer anyway.

I see my characters as an extension of myself, and as much as I have tried to play male human, sylvari and norn, I always end up deleting them. I don’t have this problem with asura or charr; I suppose because I see asura more as children or dolls and charr I just don’t relate to at all, so he is his own character. I currently only have one male, a charr named Mr Meowgi (with accents ofc, someone already had that name), which I have stuck with simply because I like the name. I had a male asura, but deleted him when I realized the cute name I chose could be taken offensively and never got around to remaking him.

I find the female armors to be cuter and easier to mix and match. Males look too stiff when running, and as a straight woman even I find the female form more pleasing to the eye in this game. I also find the male faces difficult to form into my character design idea and male hairstyles are just meh compared to female.

Why does he care, would be my question.

Why do women play guy characters, probably for the same reasons as some guys ( a lot) play female characters.

I play female characters, these are the reasons.

1) I might RP the role of the character but I never RP the character itself.
2) Because of 1) I only play in 3rd person view. Third person view also allows you to be more aware of what is around your character.
3) Female characters actually look better than male characters, usually male characters have far too much muscle, too square in the body and generally move awkwardly. Females characters move more gracefully. Plus if I have to look at a body, prefer an hour glass shape.
4) I prefer listening to female voices (goes for music too).
5) Can dress them up in sexier armour, as a straight guy I certainly wouldn’t be able to do that with a male character.

These kind of questions come up all the time on MMO forums, I know some people find it strange that guys can play female characters, but then I find it strange that they find it strange.

Knew one guy in another MMO when I was playing a male character, that left the game because I started playing a female character as my male one was unavailable at that time. So I know some people feel strongly about it but they are quite wrong in their assumptions.

I’ve been married for 20 years, no interest in any kind of porn and certainly no interest in developing romantic relationships in an MMO.

I’m male, but I just have more fun dressing up a female character. That’s why all my characters are female. The only character where I thought of making a male, was my charr, but I decided not to break my “all-female characters” tradition.

In other games where you end up spending a lot of time on creating different looks for your character from time to time, such as TES: Oblivion/Skyrim, Fallout, (with armor mods obviously) … I also played female characters exclusively. And I spend a vast amount of time in character creation as well.

In all my Baldur’s Gate games on the other hand, where there’s no dress-up and I am more in the role-playing aspect of it, I’ve always played a male character.

I dunno, guess I just like dressing up girls in my games, rather than men.

Variety. In previous games, I tended to stick with female, being female myself, but there is so much voice acting in this game that I wanted more variety. Listening to the same voice over and over got annoying. So instead of making two human females, I made one male. Plus I hate the way light armors look on females. Why are they so skimpy? It really bugs. So my ele and my mesmer are male. The male characters look stately and distinguished in light armors, females just look trashy.

Also, I like to write. I write from both the female and male perspective with no issues. And my avatars are basically just characters. I don’t see the big deal. Shrug.

I have 11 80s … 10 girls and one guy.

I just like looking at girls more.

I dont play thinking I’m the character… more like I’m helping the character in it’s journey.

Most of my gw1 characters were male but it was my first MMO was also the first rpg that I played – got Oblivion shortly afterwards and since then all my rpg/mmo characters have been female.
Thanks, in part, to the internet, I’m fully immersed in the female form and face ( you know it’s true! don’t lie! ) I’m more conditioned to be able to customize a female face than a male face, the female form is attractive while most MMO males are far from it (all beat up and scarred and hyper physical – not my thing). Aside from that I enjoy the female voice, female actions, and if I’m going to stare at a character on screen for hours at a time it’s going to be female, butt, boobs, or face, I don’t care, females take up less space on the screen and are pleasing to look at.

Let’s look at just male humans. If you take off all their clothes they seem to have bizarre hips that give them an uncanny leg gap. It’s not pronounced, but becomes quite pronounced once you put various armors on their deformed Tyrian legs. Not to mention human characters are all essentially boring as heck.

I can make ridiculous looking male charr and ridiculous looking male norn and a serious-face male asura. Sylvari males run weird and are constantly drooping their kitten heads during character creation. HAVE SOME CONFIDENCE, PLANT! And human males have the ridiculous leg gap, again.

That’s how you usually actually wield a 2h sword, though…

Not really. From this position you can only attack and this attack will be slow and predictable. You can’t defend yourself. As a bonus, if you hold it so low, you may trip and fall.

When running around/in motion, you hold it behind yourself like that.

You hold it behind yourself, but not like that. You hold it up. It’s a greatsword, not a plow.

Yup…i had a male sylvari once…hes now a she! aside from their voices being meh…i much prefer the female sylvari voice, but my goodness that leg gap is horrible, i never looked that closely at a human before but sheesh!

Ewww that is so boring!!! xD I have 10 charr, 1 sylvari, and 1 human. All female. When HOT drops im going to get another 3, for an asura(for AP), norn(for AP) and a male(Maybe) Charr Revanent(To level to 80). Each one of my characters uses different skins, sets, traits, skills, weapons etc, so its never the same playing experience! I hate swapping builds on my characters once i get them set up in something, so i end up making another for another build!

I have multiple accounts and it brings my characters up to 41 total. The game went on sale too often >.< 5 slots for the price of one when it went to $10!!! Granted 3 of those slots are reserved for chain keyfarming on one account and are constantly being deleted and recreated.

Only a few of them are level 80 though. Most are like level 10 or 20. :P

I like all of the people who use the excuse “I like to look at her butt instead of a guy”.

Not sure about all of you guys, but the amount of time I spend actually looking at my character as they are running or fighting it pretty small. Most of the time I’m looking at my target, my surroundings, other players, my skill CDs, inventory, foot placement, etc.

I have female characters because I have male characters too and wanted a balance. Their derriere did not enter into the mix.

Some people honestly sound like they can’t play a male character because they can’t control staring at their butts and thus must play a female character, because if they are going to stare at butts, it might as well be lady butts (I feel like Tina from Bob’s Burgers lol). Butts….

I’d rather stare at a female, even if its fiction, than a male version. Simple as that :/

Otherwise I’m really just dressing up a Barbie doll and trying to justify it by saying that Barbie dolls are sexier.

I’d rather play with my GI Joe and use the Internet for my other……..needs.

I don’t think that the toys you chose to play with as a child are relevant. When I played with GI Joe I thought girls where icky, now I don’t. <shrug>.

I see that people play games in two different ways. For some people, they project themselves into their avatar. And therefore would only choose characters that fit into their self-image.

For other people, the avatar is more of a puppet that gets moved. These people don’t project themselves into the avatar, and therefore may choose an avatar for entirely different reasons (aesthetic appeal for example).

IMO either is perfectly logical and fine. It’s just that some people can’t accept someone else having a different viewpoint.

the real “plow” stance is more holding the GS / long sword at middle of your body ready to “Plow” it into your foe.

“Lowering the weapon to the middle acheives the second position or Pflug (”plow"). Either passing or making a single small step of the foot in transition is useful here. The point should aim at the opponent’s chest or throat and the hilt should be held more off to the side in front of the hip joint rather than dead center between the legs. Note that depending on which leg leads in the Pflug, the hip the pommel is in front changes."

So the way the female human holds it is a true stance, but not completely and correctly put in the right spot.

I have one female character (a Sylvari). I made her because I had the Leaf of Kudzu drop and felt that a flower girl would look best wielding a flower bow.

I don’t think the majority of those in favor of female characters were speaking about any uncontrollable urge to stare at butts. I would guess (I can’t know for sure) that most of them – like me – simply prefer to look at an aesthetically pleasing female body.

Also: If I choose to equip her with revealing clothes, this does not mean that I am turning the game into a source of sexual pleasure to replace real life.

I’ve played girls in games ever since Diablo 2 I think. It’s a chance to be someone I could never be. Man IRL, Woman online. It gives me a kind of strange insight to the other side as well…

I’ve been hit on in WoW as alliance. I had to tell him my plumbing didn’t match before he let off.

In GW2 I’ve been not stompped cause i was a “girl”. I don’t want the special treatment either… you shove a pole up my kitten (lol anet’s censorship backfires badly) when you down me like you would anyone else. That Llama better have good dance moves.

Short answer: aestethics.

Long answer: i always try to define a kind of characterization to my characters, not like i roleplay or something else but i like to stand to an idea or some theme. When i want to look at my character i want to see something good looking not in sense of beauty, but of meaningful design.

For example my first character in GW2 is a female necromancer silvary: i wanted to play necro ( woe me!) and i really liked the idea of a silvary necromancer, but i really did not like the male model… just there was not any catch to the eye that was along what i was thinking, while the female did fully knowing that being caught in the character selection screen with a light-armored female with 80% of the skin exposed was a real risk! lol

I ended doing a sort of purple-skinned silvary with green hair ( an aubergine basically ) and later on i discovered that i can make myself bleed to gain might and bleed others!
that was funny… and mostly scary at the same time °w°

I’m more creeped out by the e-pinionated people gravitating in this kinda thread – judging other human beings with the help of some biased, narrow-minded observations and a few characters in a videogame than, say, a friend of mine that only plays females. I know why he does it. Why is it any of your concern?

Some people really want to be a girl in real life though. I asked a few people that I know and they said they like being treated as a female for more attention and stuff. Although they have a female name and act like a girl and not simply have few females characters but usually all of them.

So I was asked this by a friend today. We both PvP with our thieves and he saw that my thief was a girl and asked this question: “Why would you play a girl if you’re a dude?”. And I was not able to answer that because I truly have no idea

I only know that as a straight guy, 18 of my 36 characters in Guild Wars 2 are female and the other half male. As for why I am quite confused as well. So here’s to you who might have done the same thing. Why do we do that?

But personally I’ve only had very few female characters throughout all the MMO’s I’ve played and the same goes for GW2. I have a female Asuran because I feel the males were rather hideous most of the time :P not the best excuse but seeing as I haven’t purchased extra character slots its also nice to have at least one female out of the five.

I’m not a guy, but as most of the other guys have said in here, I’m pretty sure it’s just because the female body model (specifically the human and norn ones) is pleasing to the eye; most of the female body types (especially human) will have close to the universally desired waist-to-hip ratio and breasts that also add to the attractive shape. As was also already indicated, the female models tend to get the better armor skin choices. There’s no need to try to read into this a secret desire to be a woman, a lack of sexual experience, or an indication that they might have played with Barbies as a kid instead of “boy”-themed toys; there’s also need to try to read anything into guys who play only make characters, either. Incidentally, there’s nothing wrong or strange about a boy choosing to play with “girl” toys instead of “boy” toys (or a girl choosing to do the opposite).

As a woman, I play female characters because I, too, find the visuals appealing. I even think my female asura and charr are quite pretty to look at. I do have a couple of male characters that I play, and I enjoy making them look their best, too.

This catches my attention. Playing opposite gendered characters isn’t something that should have to be justified any more than choosing chocolate over skittles. There are reasons- sure, there are reasons for anything- but justification implies some kind of transgression.

The fact that people find this transgressive illustrates our culture’s gender insecurities- someone asked upthread why this conversation has gone on so long, and this is why, for me. It’s fascinating.

I like the way they look. Though I don’t play strictly female characters, they do currently outnumber the males. I spend more time changing the armor on my female slyvari warrior than any of my other characters.

Some people really want to be a girl in real life though. I asked a few people that I know and they said they like being treated as a female for more attention and stuff. Although they have a female name and act like a girl and not simply have few females characters but usually all of them.

Played female characters since 2005 in MMO’s.

In all that time I’ve only been hit on once by some creepy guy in WoW.

As for special treatment that’s more of a myth, don’t get any special treatment.

All 12 of my GW2 characters are female, even the Charr, I won’t say I act like anything out of the ordinary, just play the game couldn’t careless if my fellow players are male or female or even what sexual persuasion they are. It’s a game, I don’t know them in real life, I’m not likely to meet them so who cares.
