Why don't people chat in this game?
<first post, wooo>
Yeah, I’ve noticed that too. I just started playing ~a week ago and almost everywhere is dead silent.. and then there’s Queensdale.. “troll up, boar up..”
The awkward silence everywhere you go is the main reason I’ve joined a guild. It’s a lot better, although you can get complete silence from time to time.
People are busy playing. This is a very active game and it’s generally tricky to play while typing.
Go to LA, there’s always chatting going on there.
How to Condi Reaper on a budget
Everything I say is only in reference to PvE and WvW.
My voice chat is full of Guildies. I think that’s the trend in games now, more voice chat, leading to less text chat.
Personally I turn off map chat unless I am looking to see what champions are running. If I group with a random pug, group and say chat are still up and running. If I see people in /say chat I will respond if its relevant.
Welcome to GW2, where even if you’re in a well populated map alongside a dozen other people doing a group event, there’s absolutely zero reason to ever converse with anyone. They chucked out the team based skill system of GW1, so you can do everything solo and there’s no real reason to chat beyond a “ty” when some random person rezzes you.
My server is plenty chatty.
Racial cities are rarely visited because of the lack of incentive to go to them, Lions Arch is where the people are.
QD has people talking all the time, if you can find some players on an otherwise empty map they’ll probably strike up a conversation, even the farming zerkle-jerk in Frostgorge is nothing but conversation and dps.
Garbage at every profession 2015
I am talking about even in LA it being dead quiet. maybe it is just my sever?
Personally I have no interest in being in a guild or developing closer online friendships, so this saddens me.
Tarnished Coast is full of chat. Plus my guild RPs all the time and has an OOC guild chat with plenty of banter.
Just don’t hang out by the DR bank. It’s sort of like WoW’s Goldshire.

Quite possibly its your server, or you have mapchat disabled.

People usually chat in mmos to help each other, or to share their favourite experiences. From that, new bounds are usually created, and people make new friends.
The thing is, what’s there to help in GW2, outside of linking to map chat an event’s waypoint? What experience is there to share? The game is usually easy, and even when it is not, it lacks teamplay depth. The more epic events are completed by auto-attacked in zergs. You don’t see people coordinating in chat, becuase there’s no coordenation needed. You don’t see people forming parties in chat, except for farming trait-zergs, and only because it’s easier to tag champions while in a party. You don’t see anyone asking for guiding or for a partner while exploring, because everything can be done solo, and because everything is guided with icons placed on your map and mini-map.
There’s no adventure to be done together, except if you happen to have a guildie nearby you by chance. There’s no reason to care about players you see, because they’ll be playing their game solo, just like yourself, and because they’ll be warping back from place to place everytime they feel like going to a wp, just like you. There’s almost never an opportunity to stick with somebody, unless it was conscious decision with an already known friend or a guild member. Player characters you see in the world are just part of the scenario.
This is one of the key pillars of a MMORPG, and something that GW2 lacks at.

In explorable areas there’s almost no place where you can stand for a minute or two without getting attacked. It makes typing anything too much trouble. Also, conversations can’t happen too much or you will be suppressed.

Quoted for emphasis.
There’s really not much to talk about in GW2.

It’s quite possibly your server.
I play on Sea of Sorrows and LA is plenty crowded and chatty, even more so as of late with the Clockwork Chaos Event going on and people flocking back to LA after invasions.
I too don’t have a lot of interest in guilds, but even so there have been plenty of people who I group up with or just shoot the crap with.
Places that come to mind are LA, QD, Orr sometimes, Frostgorge, and then a couple other various zones. Again this is more representative of Sea of Sorrows rather than the whole game.
It’s too hard to chat imo. You have to stop playing, find a place out of agro range of the multitudes of mobs and you are likely to have a few following you, and and type something. Plus most people are talking to guildies or friends.
I wonder how much it has to do with guesting. My server is generally chatty as heck, especially LA and DR, but I’ve seen lively chat in most maps at one time or another.
I’m thinking maybe people who like to chat guest to servers where more people are chatting, leaving some servers with mostly quiet people.
The most chatter i do is during large events where i can sit at max range and watch the auto-attack go plink plink plink. But even then i need to keep an eye out for AOE spam and be ready to hammer that dodge. In essence, this is not a game you can play on mouse alone for any extended period.
People don’t chat because there’s always at least one person who will go: “Ew, RP” or “LOL noobs”.
Or “Reported!”
Other than that, the chatter is usually just limited to events going on or such. WvW might be more lively, but less interesting.
Lots of chatter where I usually am… Both in map and in local.
Tarnished Coast finds plenty to talk about. There is always some conversation or other going on in map chat in DR, for an example.
Start a conversation in your city. Give it a few tries. I am sure ppl will join in. “Be the change you want to see.”, etc.

From what I have seen allot of people seem to be pretty rude and I thought a couple times whether I want to keep playing the game or not.
They either tell you they don’t want to hear it if its general chat about anything pick at you for grammar and just correct everything you say on every sentence or will tell you to kitten go and google it or something.
Or they will be smug and say something like ‘thats good ’for you’’
I try not to talk too much anymore over it and mostly had enough of it and in other games also.
Could be a very good reason why people don’t talk in chat because there’s always someone willing to annoy and troll, rip etc on that player.
Also a reason I don’t really join guilds and usually find I end up playing all by myself despite wanting to do dungeons and fractals sometime, because of other peoples attitudes etc.

I don’t like people.
Other than that, there isn’t a lot of coordination required to down group events. As such, there really isn’t a reason to get all Chatty Cathy® during dungeons, fractals or dynamic group events.
