A proper DPS meter would actually show how bad stacking warriors is.

A proper DPS meter wouldn’t just show how much damage your character is dealing. It would show how much offensive support you give, how much defensive support you give, how much control you give and so on.

I m all for a proper DPS meter

So if you got a DPS meter you would suddenly turn from a nice guy into a monster?

Also you even said it yourself that you prefer people with higher DPS.

Well not everyone but when I read your answer for instance I do fear than yes.
The same is already happening with AP.
For example; we were 4 guys doing a cita story; 3 of us with above 14K AP & one with 498 AP.
I saw at least 10 guy joins & suddenly leave the group until I added in the lfg “500 AP in there don’t be afraid”.

As for I prefer the higher DPS: can you quote me the exact part when I said that ?

Why do people blame the tool when it is misused?.. Do you blame video games when someone plays it and then decide to go on a rampage in real life like what the fox news tries to portray?…. No, the blame is placed upon the person who is doing the wrong, just like if someone uses the dps meter for something toxic, he should be accountable for himself alone, the entire tool shouldn’t be to blame considering it has many beneficial uses.

if it displays a personĀ“s dps so another person can see it, it is not a “misuse”. It is the very use and nature of the tool that spells friction.

I’m not blaming the tool. It’s not the tool’s fault, as it is neither good nor bad in and of itself. I agree that the problem is people. Sadly if it can be abused or exploited, it will be. Sure maybe not be you, or by random person ‘x’, but it really only takes a small few to screw it up for everyone. To make something benign into something toxic and corrosive to the community’s well being.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

When we give cars to people, a few of them will be stupid enough to drive drunk and cause accidents, let’s solve the problem by taking cars away from everybody

Well they won’t be able to cause too many accidents because after the first one they will be in deep problem thus limiting their toxicity.
For a tool on a game; I doubt they will really care about consequence.

There’s a drastic difference between real life and a video game. Using the privileged of driving may not be the best example.

However, there is quite a bit of red tape to go through to get a license to drive to begin with. Part of that red tape is testing that you understand the rules of driving (which include not drinking and driving), but as you point out not everyone follows the rules. There is no ‘red tape’ for this type of tool. Every moron and kitten automatically has access to it.

Are you telling me that anyone with a DPS meter instantly turns into someone who thinks that other players’s respective worths are defined solely by the holy numberz?

Interestingly enough, people that do not put that much emphasis on those numbers do not need DPS meters at all.

Actions, not words.

and also for those who didn’t bother to watch the video this tool also takes boons uptime into account

It would be a good analogy only if the move to allow driving for everyone was spearheaded by drunks.

yeah go ahead, and equate everyone with a certain play style to an inconsiderate jerk, you can never go wrong with generalizations

i just want to see my dps, so i can figure out ways to kill things faster

I’m not equating them all to inconsiderate jerks. I am however acknowledging that such people do exist, and they have a tendency to ruin nice things for everyone else.

If you browse back, you’ll note that I’ve said (and have so repeatedly) that I’m perfectly fine with a personal DPS meter.

Although, really, all the math has been done for how to kill things the fastest. The answer is always zerk and go.

i mean in terms of rotation and secondary skills
(also i run soldier rings, captain’s amulet because i want some survivability as well)

i have played this game for about 3 months and have never met someone who picks on others based on their builds, i guess i’m just lucky

Here you go.

I will always prefer someone with a lesser pen, if he sign better than the other one (aka a bit more tanky gear & bit less DPS but usually alive & usefull).

At this point you are probably like “no no no, I’m not a evil elitist, I’m a good guy”. Unfortunately you mentioned the magic word “useful”.You want your teammates to be useful. That’s exactly how toxic elitists think in this game.

What’s the usual goal in this combat oriented game? Killing stuff. How do you kill stuff? You do damage. How do you do damage? Use proper builds and stay alive. How do you stay alive? Play properly and support each other.

Support is only useful if it allows you to do deal more damage (or to complete a goal) . So when you want people to be useful you usually either want them to deal damage or help to deal damage.

Ah, I see. I don’t run into a ton of kittens in the game (been here since beta myself), though admittedly I have come across a few where killing them would probably have been an act of charity to society. BUT, murder is still illegal…. so, the best I could do was ignore them.

I get what you’re saying about wanting to know best rotation, traits, gear etc. A lot of the math and such has been done by the community (and boy will some of them harp on how numbers dont lie), so the info (if you feel like browsing it) might be out there. Check out the profession forums, and you can try googling what you’re after.

I know, I know. Not the same, but it might be of some help none the less.

As far as I’ve heard, DPS meters are bannable.

Who said that?

It’s not that a DPS meter is bannable but the last time someone mentioned one the meter was implemented by reading the game’s memory. Anything doing that falls under the bannable category. It doesn’t matter if it is a DPS meter of just something that gives you dancing hamsters.

The toxic players and ignorant players who would use DPS meters to ruin play sessions for everyone else are out there right now, ruining play sessions for everyone else.

They don’t need DPS meters at all. I still have yet to see any evidence or reasoning to the effect that DPS meters do anything to make them worse. In fact, I see more solid reasoning to the effect that DPS meters make them less of a problem — after all, what do you think happens when a toxic player goes to a DPS meter for ammunition to use against others and finds that there’s none to be had?

As for everyone else, well, of course they don’t need DPS meters. Doesn’t mean that they don’t benefit from having them.

Or they can be used as backup when telling someone they aren’t pulling their own weight.

that right there is why not, i know for 100% this is gonna ask for yelling and cursing just because a certain player has trouble keeping up or that player is under-geared.
you might think it’s all with good intentions but guess what, cesar tried to conquer europe “with good intentions” yet the roman empire did more hurt then it did good.
templars killed in the name of god “with good intentions” yet they showed how much a slaughter house they left in their wake.

it’s an exaggerated way to explain this but that’s how things are, you might think it’s a good idea but believe me, nothing good can come out of this.

… And this is exactly why I roll my eyes every time I hear people go on about how amazing the GW2 community is. We are a community that can’t handle facts, how mature and great are we?

I’m not suggesting we have this, I understand the social impact it can have, but I can’t help but point out that it’s nothing more than an aid to analyse data.

As a side note, I’d argue with the whole Roman’s doing more harm than good thing, they did some incredible things, everything good, heavens no, but to imply that they were some horrible culture that were a drain on mankind… hardly.
