Why even have armor repairs anymore?
Well… It’s only to prevent solo fractals players to come back after their stuff broke. Other than that, there is always a way to repair and come back exactly where you were, so it’s kind of pointless.
No, seriously, I don’t get it either. I didn’t play back in the days, but I really don’t understand why we have to repair our stuff… for free.
Because repair canisters and the infinite repair canister.
It was originally in the game as a gold sink. Paying for repairs was removed, as I understand it, because either it wasn’t as useful as they thought or it was not an effective gold sink.
Just guessing, but maybe they left breaking armor and repairs in because reworking how armor breaks was too much trouble and maybe they weren’t sure if it might be brought back later.
They took away the cost of armor repairs for all portions of the game, mainly because wvwers were having to spend loads of coins throughout a nightlt run repairing their armor after being run over by a zerg of 25+ everytime they set foot outside of citadel.
This change happened quite some time ago, way before HOT. But comparable to HOT bosses, imagine having to pay everytime you died, because broken armor decreases your effectiveness, and non broken is better. That money added up in wvw, where loot was bad and death was often and those players never complained about the change.
[HaHa] Hazardous Hallucination
Repair npc wages are subsidized by Zommoros now as part of his court-mandated civil service, but he’s not not going to pay money for nothing (his empire is built on the reverse: everyone pays him and they get nothing back)… so removing the repair npcs would cause a huge unemployment spike in Tyria.
(Everyone saw what happened to Job-O-Tron, and most of them don’t want to seek new employment as a glider skin.)

Well I wvsw and i complain about the change all the time. I highly doubt it was done to accommodate wvsw of all things. My guess would be it was to make the game more accessible to casual players. Draw more players in at the expense of game depth, compensate in other ways….they didn’t compensate very well though.

It’s to remind you that you died. Without that poor gameplay goes without notice.
It still is something that you have to consider in story instances. Sometimes you have to use a canister if you die too much in one of those b/c there is no repair station.
It’s a penalty for dying to many times. You can always pop to ghalls, use the repair in front of your feet and leave ghalls to the exact same position u were before.

So, can somebody explain to me why even have armor repair anymore?
I would say, it’s that same reason why a game like strip-poker is played
a pretence to show out naked
However, it’s not very hero-like to let your favoured girl die 14 times just to see her naked

I’m not sure where exactly to post this, so I’ll post it here and hope it gets to where it needs to go.
I guess I was on a break from playing GW2 when they decided to take away the cost of repairing armor. Since they have, I don’t really understand the point of having to repair your armor anyway? I never had a problem having enough coin to repair my armor, just by playing the game naturally…. so what was the point of making armor repairs free?
It just seems like a waste of time at this point, I can go in and get hulk smashed by many bosses many times, only to turn around and instantly have my armor repaired on my next WP trip…. FOR FREE…. I feel like, at least when I had to pay for it, it taught me a lesson, I felt like “welp, better go at this at a different direction…. maybe get a better group, etc etc”

They took it away as part of their April 2014 Feature pack (welcome back) which included major changes like megaservers, the wardrobe system and world boss timers. The reasoning they stated at the time:
We feel the time penalty to return and repair accomplishes our goal enough to not need a secondary cost that punishes newer and less experienced players the most.
Plus it didn’t amount to much as a gold sink in the grand scheme of things. And you still have to WP to somewhere that has an armor repair NPC/node, it doesn’t repair simply by WPing. As they state, the penalty is the time sink to go to a repair location and since there are only a couple on each map, the time to make your way back to the area you were.
At the end of the day, there still has to be a death penalty to encourage players to play “better”.

Open guild window, go to guild hall, repair, open guild window, leave guild hall. No walking to repair station, no money used, no walking back.
I don’t mind the repair, I suppose. I do mind, now that we don’t pay for it, that anvils and repair NPCs don’t repair automatically.

Armor repair doesn’t need to have a monetary cost in order for it to act as a penalty for dying.
I agree with Rauderi, if you interact with an anvil it should just show a popup ‘repair’ and instantly repair all your armor without a chat window. It’s a small quality of life thing that makes sense now as it no longer costs anything (and hasn’t cost anything for a loooooong time).

Oh I know. But he implied that WPing itself repairs armor.

I suspect that removing the code which causes damage to armor on defeat would have been a lot harder than just zeroing the cost.
