As usuall I am unsure where to post my posts but I hope this is the right place.

(Edit: My point to this thread is to tell those who asks the question ‘Why is there a profanity filter when you get banned for being foul mouthed’ a few reasons to why some who don’t wan’t foul language disables profanity filter.)

I have read on Dev commented topics and found that there are so many who asks this question after have gotten their 3-days ban.
And I don’t wan’t to revive threads with a comment to their question after a dev have answered.

I don’t mind cursing, in my country more or less everyone curses like cute kittens :P
But what I do mind is when people are calling someone bad names or saying realy foul words over and over again.

So why don’t I have Profanity filter on?
First and most important reason is; I am not from an English speaking country and some of our words will be blocked by the filter, so typing with my friends or other players from my country (in Party/Guild chat ofc) would have been troublesome.

Second reason is; as I first said, I don’t mind the usuall cursing that more or less everyone does nowdays (Atleast in my country), so I rather read the curses than reading wingdings or kittens but I can’t help other players letting it getting out of hand.

As for me that is why I’m having profanity filter off option. Just becouse I can handle foul language doesn’t mean I use them on any chat becouse I mind the other players.

What I always found funny is that you can disable it in the game, but apparently are not able to on the forums.

Anyway, yes, the filter is annoying. Half of the time it blocks out harmless words or a string of random letters in the middle of an otherwise fine word and renders messages difficult to understand. I don’t really understand the rationale anyway. People aren’t going to shatter because they read a word that society has deemed “icky”.

Probably because you can stop a 8 year old from playing the game (change their password, for example), but not stop them from reading kittens on a forum on the Internet.

But the game has a rating and probably, due to that rating, it has to be included. It’s better for Anet to have that rating, as it will open up the game to a wider audience.

I just disable mine, because “bad” language doesn’t exist in my book. Only language does.

Here’s the link to the Guild Wars 2 sales page from Amazon. Note that it’s rated “teen”. Guild Wars has been careful not to put anything in the game that would offend that rating.

As far as I know, video games in most countries, including Australia, have to have some sort of rating by law, since not rated games can’t be sold here legally.

Edit: Would have been nice if I’d included the link.

They are rated, but with a disclaimer that the company isn’t responsible for online content – CYA disclaimer in case someone gets offended.

Because, sorry to sound rude, but you’re not the center of the Universe. The developers do not cater to just what you do or do not like. There are other people out there [not me] that are offended by curse words that are extensions of sexual body parts, or whatever.

There are also children that play this game and read these forums at the consent of their parents. A.Net would like to keep these forums as family-friendly as possibly, which I respect that.

Also, it’s because curse words are a crude, angry way to express one’s opinion of something they have not clearly thought out and just want to vent about.

Ex.

“Kitten you, A.Net! You kittened my built for the last time.”

Proper way to express it:

“What’s going on, A.Net? Why’d you change my build to make it 20% less effective? I can’t do X now.”

Oh my, I see some missunderstood me…

The point of my thread is not to say that I wonder why profanity filter exists, it is to say this is the reason why profanity filter exists. I had that topic title becouse it made it cling nice and to get more from both parts to read it.

Well my point was to say that profanity filter exists for those who need it but not everyone can have it enabled because some need to be able to communicate in their own language in thier party or guild chat, or that they tolerate a few curses but not a whole dictionary in foul language.

So even if profanity filter are used or not it does not give anyone ANY excuse to use foul language in anyway, think about the others around you. There is always ways to express yourself without using foul language.

Im sorry for not being clear and I will edit my main post and see if I can make it clearer.

(hehe so to answer your post, I fully agree with you, but the question is that only a few use the profanity filter and that is why they see the foul language and reports players using foul language… So they have children and why have they disabled profanity filter? Yes, a few reasons are my reasons.)

why are children playing a game rated teen? And then what are they doing with their filter off if they don’t want to hear insulting stuff?

Here is how I see it. Have more than one game you like to play. Use the words you want in party and whispers. Don’t curse in general chat or use racial slurs because it’s rude to the other players. If you get banned for cursing then play the other game while you’re banned. Banning your customers is generally bad for business.

Seems we know why the game filters profanity. So, the topic should really be, “Why do we have the option to turn the filter off?” That one’s easy. It’s there to enable people who want to use such language in restricted chat channels (party, guild, private) the option to do so. It is not there to allow players to throw such language around in general channels with impunity.

But isnt it hypocrisy to disable the filter then complain and report people who use “bad” words? Leave it on and you wont see the “bad” words, you activley pick to have it turned off. Why? Just to complain?

The empty can rattles the most.

Also, the filter is pretty bad, for instance, something like the word kittencat or the name kitten gets filtered, even when used in a lastname like Bruce kitteninson and so on.

In my mind people are to sensitive when it comes to words. Words are just word, filtering the “bad” words wont do anything about the more morbid part of the word usage on the net, like the ones that straight out threatens someone or their families life.

“If you dont keep your mouth shut I’m gonna kill your dog and make you choke on it”

See, this isnt stopped by the filter, and its far worse than a simple line like “kitten you”.

It doesnt add up in my mind.

Should I be able to report someone, and “hopefully” get him banned because he said the word orange? Because one time in the past I got attacked with an orange?

I think I’ve yet to say any topic I haven’t seen on just about every MMO board I’ve been on. Balance issues, OP builds, nothing to do at level cap, not enough content, too many bugs….It’s like deja vu all over again.

As for the profanity filter, it’s something that every game pretty much needs to have, because some people have different views on what language they want to see than others.

I think so, as I said in my OP I disable profanity filter to be able to write in my language to my friends and guildmates and also I do swear alot when I talk and personaly don’t mind people swearing near me but I know I have to respect others opinion. What I don’t like is realy foul language like mentioning some specific bodyparts or making a long sentence with only swearwords and also as you said harassment.

But that is just me, some others have less tolerance than me and can’t have filter enabled for various reasons and I am not sure but those banned are not the ones saying once “I hate that kitten Boss”, more like these harassing or spewing foul words all over.

They need to clear things up on this issue. I have read the code of conduct and there is no rule against profanity just this:
1. While playing Guild Wars 2, you must respect the rights of others and their rights to play and enjoy the Game. To this end, you may not defraud, harass, threaten, embarrass or cause distress and/or unwanted attention to other players. This includes posting insulting, offensive, or abusive comments about players, repeatedly sending unwanted messages, reporting players maliciously, attacking a player based on race, sexual orientation, religion, heritage, etc. Hate speech is not tolerated.
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/legal/guild-wars-2-rules-of-conduct/

However it says this on the conduct breach page:
The Rules cover such basic expectations as:
Don’t swear or spam or break any laws.

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/legal/guild-wars-2-conduct-breaches-outcomes/

The wording of don’t swear on the breaches page needs to be removed as it is not a violation of the code of conduct. So therefore anybody banned for swearing can legaly sue NCSoft/Arenanet.

Here is the user agreement you accepted that they have to go by: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/legal/guild-wars-2-user-agreement/

So they have some work to do on their legal documents.

Swearing is considered offensive by many people, and can cause them distress. Since it is specifically referred to in a statement about following/breaking the rules, it can be assumed that Arenanet’s official stance is that swearing is offensive. So no, you can’t sue them for taking away your right to say kitten.

And, yes, this means that if a user has an intense negative reaction to the word “broccoli” you can be banned for saying it. They won’t, unless you specifically do so to harass the user, but if you are banned for saying it you still can’t sue them and expect to win.

It’s their playground and they can tell you to leave if they want to.

Are you a lawyer? I’m not so sure you can legally sue someone for banning you from a game for swearing, no matter what the terms of service says.

There are too many other particulars that would have to be addressed. For one thing, what’s the most you could sue them for? The price of the game?

Your court fees would be higher than any amount you could get from suing, and on top of that, it would probably fall into the category of small claims court.

Yeah, I’m thinking suing Anet over being banned for use of curses publicly is a case most lawyers would advise you against trying to press.

I don’t really know the mindset, though, as I’ve never reported someone for cussin’ in chat. If I find someone’s chat behavior annoying, I’m going to block and forget them.

But it’s filtered none the less so shouldnt be reportable. Otherwise there is absolutley no reason to have the filter in the first place. And as I said, there are far more serious phrases being said in chats, something the filter cant handle.

Currently it really only screws things up, like names for example. There are real world names you just cant use, because they include a “bad” word. And there are several words which dont have an offensive meaning in every case, still the filter doesnt recognize such.

I never report people, unless I suspect a bot, hacker or cheater/exploiter. Words dont bother me, not even in-game life threats. I usually just laugh about it when people get upset to that point. It has happened alot, mostly when I played WoW. I cant count the number of times I had life threatening tells sent to me or threads made on the forum about how worthless my life was and that I should kill myself, just because I loved ganking.

It gives me a good laugh, sine I know it’s mostly empty words and those that really mean it probably lack the braincapacity to even find where I live.

Actually I don’t think anyone gets banned just for cursing. I think they get banned by using profanity in combination with a personal attack.

The filter is there to stop people from seeing language they don’t want to see. Mine is off. But there’s a difference between someone saying kittening Lupi and kitten you, Vayne!

Mind you, I’ve heard the latter more than the first, which wouldn’t suprise most people here, but one is probably not a bannable offense, where as the personal attack is.

their useless filter has no use since 05 (gw1). If you have a filter in your game, don’t freaking ban some1 using the F word or remove your stupid filter.

Swear filter doesn’t mean you have the right to swear. Sorry brotato.

You agreed to a set of rules when you first started playing the game and those rules say you can’t swear in public chat.

Private chat? Do whatever you want.

Are you a lawyer? I’m not so sure you can legally sue someone for banning you from a game for swearing, no matter what the terms of service says.

Well, technically you can file a lawsuit for pretty much any reason. You see frivolous lawsuits in the news once in a while, like suing a dry cleaner for millions of dollars because they lost your pants. The trick is finding a lawyer who doesn’t just laugh at you until you leave his office.

As for winning, simulate your chances by preheating an oven to 450 degrees F, put a snowball in a pan and put it into the oven for 30 minutes. The amount of ice remaining represents your chances of winning the lawsuit.

Just because you have a seatbelt doesn’t mean it’s ok to speed when you use it.

I don’t always swear, but when I do, it’s with guildies.

Here’s what people thought of GW1 when it first came out: http://tinyurl.com/bntcvyc

Does the in game profanity filter substitute the offending word with the word kittens like it does here on the forums?

If so, I’d have it on all the time!

The profanity filter is there to protect ANET from people who are offended by foul language. They can simply say that there was a filter in the game and that you have the option to turn it on so they are not legally obligated because someone is offended by such language. The existence of the filter does not give you carte blanche to swear. Offensive language is still frowned upon and is punishable. It is not there to protect an individual from seeing profanity just to protect the company from any repercussions as a result of that profanity.

It always makes me wonder however when people try to defend the use of cuss words in a game by stating “I have a foul mouth and swear all the time in real life”. There is a difference however. If I hit my thumb with a hammer you would probably here an expletive deletive coming from me, but that is an involuntary response to pain or another stimulus. Swearing in a computer game, using a type chat interface (not a voice chat) is no longer an involutary response. You have to make a conscious effort to type that swear word in which is why you have no defense when you get banned for using profanity, as it takes a conscious effort to use it and is not an involuntary response.

You know why? When I was a kid, if I got in trouble know what happened? I got my kitten beat. When we rode our bikes we didn’t have helmets. When we went to go tricker treat our parents didn’t go with us. When another kid talked smack to us or threatened us you know what happened? Did we cry to mommy? No we beat that kids kitten

Times have changed, the last generation of normal kids were millennials ones born in the late 70s, 80s and early 90s, fast forward to now, most peoples are sissys now. Cant handle to be called names, they will go commit suicide if u call them names.

Ya, by all means, let’s mock kids that have succumbed to depression and encourage assaulting children for what they say.

I am not sure who is the biggest whiner, people who whine about cuss words in games or the people whining they can’t cuss. Cussing is overrated anyway.
