Hmm. I’d agree that Arena Net should probably look at their art bible once more.

I bet “Thou shall only make ugly looking hats” is in there >_>

And backpieces. Anyone remembers how many season 1 rewards relied on ugly backpieces?

Thou shall only make ugly looking shoulders too which I was recently trying to find some for my armor again. So many of them don’t fit my character and are too big and hover or just look plain odd. Just look at this gem store quality shoulder piece that flys away.
And I’ll continue to go on and on with how bad coats and skirts scale and end up giant tents, butt parachutes and vessels of weapon clippage yet no matter how defiant these types of armor are to the game’s design they keep making them.

You’re complaining about overdesign, and then you post Final Fantasy Armors?

Wha????

I’d say that FF armors, although heavily stylized and detailed, at the very least look “cool” and achieve their intended purpose. Go look at Dragoon’s armor and tell me how elements contradict its intent or look like a parody. That’s the difference between, say, dragoon and gw2’s bladed. The former is over-stylized but cool- The later is an unintended parody.

I always figured the bladed armor wasn’t designed as a set so much as individual pieces for mixing in with other gear. But really don’t see a dramatic difference in relative aesthetics or practicality between Dragoon and Carapace armor, for example, And the female Winged armor is pretty ridiculous in any situation other than on a Runway.

I’m VERY confident if I looked hard enough, I could find something even more ridiculous than the bladed armors in FF14.

I’m saying that because I’m a longtime fan of the series and I know full well the absurdity SE is capable of.

I am very happy the way it is. In FF14 I had many “armors” (if you want to call mage clothes ‘armor’) that were beautiful but I had to replace because them with newer models – the replacing mechanism (called “glamour” IIRC) was/is incredible expensive and not to achieve for an average player.

But I have found one set I L O V E: The “Noble” set.
And I might put that on as much as I can. Before, well, the sets I had/saw were often ridiculous. My first few clothes in the game looked like a sofa being strapped to my body with tape, the successor looked like the cover of a 70s car’s backseat… But now I am happy to have something that goes well with my top hat (and Asura in general) Also, the colouring possibilities are great! Shadow Abyss as well as Shadow Red and Brick are great colours.

Even though I have to admit it only fits Asura well. The same happens to FF14. The Evenstar set – my favourite – looks only nice on Lalafell.

I can understand the thread creator though. I also found it hard to dress my alternative ego in something I feel well. In the end, my ingame clothes finally look close/r to my real-life outfit also colour-wise.

Zedexx, sly Asura Thief/Assassin
and politically highly incorrect. (#Asuracist)

I rather enjoy the set I cooked up for my sylvari warrior:
http://puu.sh/ofYb3/ccc7435bba.jpg
However, I feel like there really needs to be more heavy armor that fulfills the following criteria:

1. Helms that have multiple dye colors that are completely closed around the head (so without looking like I’m wearing a frying pan). I’m only using the Bladed helm because it’s the best I can find that fulfills that and is available to every race. Human sets are good for helms, but they’re human only, so…

2. More armor like Body of Koda. The Carapace lower armor piece is really fantastic, if not for the fact that’s only really true for male characters. For females your skirt is a butterfly and you show thigh for no reason. See this: http://puu.sh/ofYxp/7d2078b212.jpg If only it was completely closed around like the male model and it didn’t look like I just walked out of a fashion show.

3. More armor that isn’t like Body of Koda. By that I mean, make armor actually be armor for heavy armor. Vigil’s Honor Tassets, which is impossible to refute as being “the heavy armor set” since vigil people are kind of the warrior faction, show thigh as well and the skirt is weird. I’d rather have it be straight up leg plates. Leystone Tassets are a skirt too, but it’s odd and short. Bladed Tassets also have an unnecessary short skirt. Studded Plate Leggings are a bit too beefy and they look weird overall, blurry even. Gladiator looks like it’s made of leather. Draconic looks like it’s Light armor, also way too long and flashy without any detailing. Illustrious tassets for females are a joke compared to the male model which looks alright.

4. More top armor that isn’t a bikini or a sleeveless shirt. Look at Carapace armor! It feels like it’s a sleeveless armor with a shirt underneath. http://puu.sh/ofYOm/cfa5b0dd49.jpg Bladed is fine, actually in this department. Flame Legion Breastplate would be fine if it wasn’t for the fact it’s on fire in weird areas (I’m using it for my look just because it has so much detailing and it’s what I need) and so many others are just plain off-putting like Vigil’s Honor breastplate. Yeah, that’s a breastplate alright, you can see my skin showing off everywhere, it’s like I’m asking to be stabbed and killed. I’m a warrior in melee range, I want armor.

5. More shoulder armor that isn’t like wearing a mansion on each shoulder, but still big. The Inquest Pauldrons are a good example even if they look like sheets of paper from up close. They’re big, they’re detailed, but they aren’t mountains. On the other hand you have the godawful Twisted Watchwork Shoulders which, while they’re a good asymmetrical choice, look just plain terrible, especially since it’s a blatant lie and they’re not “Shoulders” but “Shoulder”. Bladed again look fine too. Vigil’s Honor Pauldrons look okay, but they feel like they’re encroaching on the helm area too much. Leystone is atrocious, first you can’t give it multiple dyes and second they are like giant rocks on your shoulders.

6. Boots. Bladed Greaves are too bladed, everywhere. It clips through stuff and looks weird, could have used a bit less blades. Carapace is okay, but it doesn’t look like they go high enough and they’re a bit beefy. Vigil’s Honor Greaves are perfect, they protect even your knees and you can realistically still fold your legs. Heavy Plate Greaves – what the kitten are these tiny slippers with barely anything to protect your leg with? Again with the Draconic armor, it just looks… like Light armor too.

Those are mainly my gripes. Gloves in general are really superb and you can do a lot with them. Tons of asymmetrical designs which I utterly love even if my choice of outfit doesn’t show it.

If your post starts with “how dare” then you can be assured I’ll disregard it.

Even the outfits, the current crank-out-once-per-week cash cow, is very hit or miss on style. Slayer outfit? Tragic. The only reason the Gwen outfit sells is because of the nostalgia brand name; it’s otherwise far too plain and looks shoddy on men.
Sniper Bandit outfit? Typical of lazy anti-Charr design.
Would be nice to have some effort for the two non-human races in the game, to be honest. And while I don’t mind one way or another, some people would like some feminine flair to otherwise androgynous females of those races. Maybe not halter tops and mini skirts, but design that shows consideration to ‘softer’ silhouettes.

And possibly show off those awesome furry legs on Charr. But when they do go with dimorphic charr outfits, we end up with an atrocity like the Ancestral outfit, where the male’s:
*fits the body nicely
*Has all details properly scaled to the charr model
*Accommodates the tail
*Comes with a tail decoration that spans the whole length!

And the female armor:
*Has a boob window to nothing
*Hideously oversized dragon around the neck
*Makes no effort to accommodate the tail.
*Leaves said tail bare while clipping through the stupid trenchcoat

At least they got the Wedding dress right.

I do like the Royal Guard outfit on Charr – it accommodates the tail, and its helm even makes room for the charr’s ears and horns! (Something the Tier 1 Cultural armor doesn’t even get right)

… I think they can solve all the problems by adding a furry loincloth to the game (Bikini for sylvari, human, and norn females), and slap Lord Faren’s name on it. So we can be Tarzan of Maguuma.

I think you are seeing my vision of what I need to wear . I need THIS ASAP.

+1 op Guildwars 2 armor is bleh… very few actual armors i look at and think wow that looks awesome..

Even the top of the game armors don’t appeal.. Weapons are similar basic all through the game, horrible..

Legendaries are beyond hideous, all that grinding for an ugly weapon… i think not.

Bet you’re glad you’re back then, yeah?

:)

Eh its better than the Division hahaha, but yeah i’d have honestly thought more would have changed, some has cosmetically but game wise not so much..

A lot of people already run around playing (even in pvp) without any armor on, I don’t know if its becuz they like that look or if they want a bigger challenge or maybe a little of both, but I think its time we get some armor that looks like were not wearing any armor maybe bikinis and speedo and loin cloth type things in different designs and styles some rugged and wilderness woman/man type others more bright and flashy and shiny modern day rave type. A lot of people spend a LOT of time and effort in creating their character and making it perfect and just don’t wanna cover up their masterpiece. If these types of outfits get made I guarantee they will get bought many times

My wants with current armor sets are fairly simple.
For heavy, bring in a variant of GW Elite Templar. Make armor look like armor again not some overdone thing with so many spikes, blades or special effects on it.
For medium, Some more sets WITHOUT DUSTERS!!!!!
For light, how about a few sets with real pants for casters rather than long skirts all around?

Some of those were clearly intended to be somewhat goofy. Nothing wrong with those, regardless of the game where they’re in. GW2 might have a few share of them too, and that’s fine.

My complaints are directed towards gear that is clearly meant to be epic, cool or end-game, but ended up being unintentionally humorous. That happens way too frequently in GW2, unfortunately.

I agree with your observations. I recently found this article about the future of fashion design in MMOs, it appears that a certain game is already using real fashion designers from real high fashion houses to design in game fashion so that they can market apparel to gamers. In other words, what your character wears, so can you. Here is the link

http://www.polygon.com/2016/1/22/10806962/fashion-video-games-final-fantasy-13-lightning

MMOs are increasingly being sold to both genders, an older population of players, these players have disposable incomes and come from a generation that does cosplay, it makes sense that some game developers will capitalize on this trend. Lets face it, armor design is one of the most expensive parts of game development (according to anet). It is a problem for anet to give us what we want (more fashionable skins), and keep the price of the game down, especially for non-gem store items. Think of the synergy of having developers that also have a real understanding of good fashion, creating fashion that can be purchased from real life stores, is an idea whose time has come. In this way game fashion becomes a marketing tool for real life fashion.

But until then, I would love another mini skirt or Daisy Duke shorts for summer, considering how some people complain about “objectification”, I doubt I will get it. I belong to an all female GW2 group with thousands of members (close to 4k of us), and many many of us like revealing armor, so don’t blame that on female players, it is a vocal minority that are offended by that.

Also.. why nearly all helmets ingame are open? Where are helmets which would cover whole face like phalanx or partially like charr t3?

With gender locked gear? I don’t think so. Females have like x1,5 more set than males.

For example, Setzer set should be male only (from SE perspective) but it’s both gender, while bunny set is female gender locked. yay.

Thavnair’robe, gender locked while the other set is for both gender. I mean, if they waste time doing females stuff they should do it for males then or unlock it to both gender.

You can see some complain about it on the official forum anyway, if you need some proof.

Yeah, females always get more customization and privileges in vidya games. Maybe he’s addressing that there’s a buncha revealing stuff for any male character no matter the class, and the armor isn’t vastly different in appearance between genders. Some armor here is outstandingly different between genders to the point of being an entirely new concept. Like the Witch/Hexed outfit is one of the worst offenders imo. I wanted a mage hat or a chinese hat too. They’re two entirely different outfits between genders.

It’s kind of like Phoenix gemstore armor (out of many, many other examples). The female set is kasmeer’s, which is beautiful, majetic and truly reminds me of a phoenix. The male set is… a rehash of an existing and bland model, with a few new straps. Yeah…

This is very consistent with light armor in general.

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Embroidered_armor
The female version is quite beautiful and worthy of end-game armor (even though we’re talking about low-level gear). The male set is somewhat bland, something there is “lacking” that would have made it truly epic. But this is not one of the worst offenders. It is, after all, low-level gear, and the male set is actually one of my favourite low-level sets in this game. Still, the female set is gorgeous.

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Masquerade_armor
Another example where the female variant is gorgeous and end-game worthy, while the male variant is lacking. I actually like the concept art for the male variant (not as much as the female one, but I do enjoy it), but it seems like its style was lost when translated to the in-game model. The stylish cloth edges and pointy-ends in the artwork lost all their coolness in the game model, where they look exaggerated and goofy instead.

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Winged_armor
This one is quite striking. The female version is gorgeous and beautifully detailed, while the male variant is the opposite, with really cheap, poorly-made and cartoon-ish details. Why is there such a difference in quality between both models in the first place? The concept art for the male version is actually quite cool, so it was not the artist’s fault.

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Feathered_armor
Yet another in the never-ending list for female>>>>male light armor sets. There’s so much beauty in the female set, where everything seems to be at the perfect size, at the perfect ratio, with the perfect edges and curves, which makes it quite elegant. The male version is a chaotic mess that makes the guy look like a total clown.

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Exalted_armor
Not so stricking here, but the female version is simply efficient: all the details add up to make it appealing. The male set has those ugly metallic accessories for no apparent reason, and they take away what could have been a fine set otherwise.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Nightmare_Court_armor_%28light%29
Another male version that could have been as good as the female variant if it didn’t fail terribly at a few spots. The artwork makes both look really awesome:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/7/78/Light_armor_05_concept_art.jpg
But again, only the female version is well translated into the game. Why? Why? Why?

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Phoenix_armor
Look at the effort done to the female set, especially for the floating feathers. Then look at the male version. Look at its boots. Look at its “attempt” to resemble a phoenix. Interestingly enough, the upper part isn’t even that bad (it can look great with the correct colors, and all the tiny details enhance it instead of taking it down), but overall, there’s a clear difference between both.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Sorcerer's_armor
Female = Tiny details that are beautiful to state at. Male = Oversized shoulders, and staps, a lot of straps. Look at how much effort was put into the woman’s skirt to make it unique and distinctive, and then look at the guy’s skirt and tell me if it isn’t yet another lazy and boring rehash.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Stately_armor
The male version would have been almost there, if the proportions weren’t off. But they’re always off.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Priory's_Historical_armor_%28light%29
I dislike either, but the proportions for the male version are always off. Fat chest and oversized shoulders, again, for no apparent reason.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Conjurer_armor
Remember this beatiful, flowing dancer-ish look from elementalist’s marketing trailers? Say hello to the male counterpart, ever-king of oversized shoulders, bland chest armor and goofy I-have-no-idea-why’s-that-there fur.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Conjurer_armor
Such a beautiful mesmer armor from GW1. The male variant looks good too, except that anet put in the wrong proportions (surprise!) which makes males look fatter than they should.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Profane_Light_Armor_Skin
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Incarnate_Light_Armor_Skin
I find all those ugly, but I just want you to see the shoulders, guys. The shoulders. Anet’s modelers love massive shoulders on male light armor, and they don’t even try to be subtle about it.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Aurora_armor
I just wanted to post this as an exception. One of the very few cases where the female version looks crap compared to the male set.

yeah, I meant that male and female armor in FF look at least alike and part of the same set. in here we have the https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Krytan_Medium_Armor_Skin Krytan medium armor, where the differences between genders is just ridiculous. females get a tight skin armor with a cool sleveless short jacket. and guys? oh, just ANOTHER long coat, because you know, we really need another one of these…

This doesn’t even bothers me much, as long as both versions are appealing. Sometimes, what works for one gender does not works for another (see: the new Gwen outfit), and bigger changes are justified.

For example, I have nothing against the fact that phoenix armor looks so different for both genders, because, clearly, the female version’s style is too feminine and princess/ fairy like. (And I don’t have anything against players who want fairy armor for their guys, but we’re assuming that, on a broader sense, both variants should satisfy both genders as equally as possible; aka, they should be as “cool” as possible for both tastes). What it truly annoys me, is how the male armor is so uncreative, so effortless, so bland, so unexpressive in comparison to the female variant. So they don’t merely look too different: the male cloth looks straight up filler, as if the designers/ modelers didn’t want to bother with it but were forced to, or as if they didn’t have the time or the budget for it.

That could be understandable in that specific case, as the female variant is the armor piece for a story character, just as it may be understandable that Gwen’s outfit was doomed to fail on males, but generally, this occurs far more frequently than in those specific situations, which plain shows that Anet just can’t do it, for whatever reasons it may be.

The greater the the video card setting you have, the more ‘attractiveness’ you get from many armours…particularly the shader settings.

However..it is a massive cash cow going unexploited. I get the feeling not many like the outfit concept and instead preferred armour sets.

  • Inability to make stylish edges and curves (even when the artwork is stylish, the in-game models translate them really poorly).
  • Inability to add epic-looking armor into the game (anyone remember the days of ascended gear and the glorious community reaction to the skins? Or what about carapace -> luminiscent upgrade, where an overly-designed, goofy-looking armor set was given a blue tint to make it unique and special: pity that the base model looks terrible).

Case in point: The saddest part is that the concept art for ascended armor looks amazing as opposed to the flustercluck we got ingame. I’d even go as far as to say it’s fit for legendary armor!

Just look at this:

Yep, definitely consistent with everything else.

Fun fact: at lower/ medium graphical settings, the heavy ascended boots get a blurry, pixeled look, while the remaining components do not.

I’ve found a lot of the criticism comes from the male population when it comes to this topics in western games. Everyone’s too afraid about being politically correct or not offensive on other peoples’ behalf such that in many instances proponents have collectively turned themselves into more-easily-offended versions of the groups they’re trying to assist. The biggest case in GW2 recently being the bunny-ears discussion about the affiliations to “adult entertainment”; however, I found on server-teamspeak several males complained about the ridiculousness of the attire, while a majority of people with them and excited about the sale were female, defending the notion of the silliness and whimsy that would be “[adult trademark name] combat bunnies.”

Eastern games definitely have their fair share of issues with needless amounts of sex appeal, but including revealing attire options isn’t something everyone should freak out over objectification for. That’s not to say it isn’t an issue or that everyone should be complacent, but more options for everyone are always better imho. We’re in a place of fantasy and real-life anonymity. If a girl wants to dress her character up sexy-like, she shouldn’t be flogged for inexcusable behavior, and if a guy wants to create a female character and dress her up sexy-like, that’s his prerogative which he shouldn’t feel obligated to justify without needing to feel like a scumbag objectifying women, and the same applies in vice versa; I know of quite a few females who are quite fond of the steamy appearances of Lord Farren(heit).

In this game, I run around with a sword bigger than I am cleaving in half pretty much everything that I pass by. As have people playing fantasy games since the 1970’s. We haven’t seen any increases in greatsword-based, game-induced violence. There’s little reason to believe the things we see and do in games should be what we aspire to see and do in the real world. As long as people can make that distinction, we might as well all be entitled to our own visions of fun. If someone else’s existence in skimpy armors upsets someone, they have the capacity to turn all models into standard ones. Otherwise, let people be people, because that’s the truest representation of the real world.

TL;DR: More diversity, skimpy, unrealistic, or not, because options are always better than none.

I probably would appreciate the skins on other races if it weren’t for all the glowing bits, wings, gaudy backpacks and weapon trails obscuring what might be a decently crafted character.

…bah, who am I kidding? People that pour on that stuff are likely to dye everything Blackest-black anyway :p

what bothers many of us about skimpy outfits is not that they exist, but mainly 2 issues:
-when most of the female outfits or armor is skimpy, you’re taking options away from them, you can only be sexy, and many girls don’t want to only look sexy. So, more options is better.
-males don’t really get many skimpy outfits or armor choices (I’m looking at you, medium armor human male)and some guys also want the option to look sexy and show some skin, so again, more options would be apreciated.

I don’t think anyone wouldbe against sexy armor for females if they had the CHOICE to wear them or not, and if males had comparable options to dress skimpy too.

For a more company like Anet, that has tried t be progressive, this should be a non issue at all.

I have a solution for people who don’t enjoy armor in Guild Wars 2, or most armor in any MMORPG. The solution is to play World of Warcraft for 10 days and then quit. After that, you’re going to enjoy every design ANY other game will offer, no matter how bad it actually is. Trust me, this works. I played World of Warcraft for years, went into Guild Wars 2, and every armor design in the game is godsend for me compared to World of Warcraft’s armor design.

Sadly Ive actually played FF14 for over 6 months so I actually have the inverse of the this effect.

Guess what game’s got you covered then.

But I do agree. It’s funny that people give Terra so much kitten for it’s skimpy armor and completely gloss over the fact that the skimpy/skintight armor was mostly on the Elves and Castanics which had male versions that were just as outlandish and “kittenty” as the female ones in their own way.

Anet has little in the way of Skimpy male armor with only the Daydreamer’s Finery really presenting a “sexy for the sake of sexy” option for men. Pitfighter and Scallywag sort of fall under this but they both also have a heavy “gladiator” theme to them which means it sort of makes sense that you wouldn’t have full coverage.

My problem with the Daydreamer’s Finery is that it has pants on charr. I wish that it, design-wise, had a lower body covering more like the Masquerade set. Or that the male Masquerade set had an open front like the Daydreamer finery.

I really don’t know why they haven’t made a swimwear set for the gem store yet.

I know people will shout “I don’t want to see a sea of female human toons in bikinis!” but honestly, you didn’t see that happen in FF14. Sure, some people would wear the bathing suits or the subligar armor, but most didn’t.

Once the novelty runs out they’ll just go back to what ever they were wearing before.

Because for some reason…they are trying their hardest to make the game entertaining for 10 year olds.

Not sure why they have such neutral themes…for everything. Probably the leading reason GW2 gets boring…it’s boring to look at after a while.

I wish my character said “Sh** on a fumble”
or Da** when they were interrupted.
I wish there was blood in the game.

Just over all darker.

Armor…I wish wasn’t so universally neutral.
The game needs more sex and less coat rack sized chicks. They need gear that Ivy might find appealing…or Bayonetta. As an OPTION not as mandatory. Save your stones.

It’s like watching Steins;gate or Attack on Titan or even Freezing…completely serious matters dressed up like an episode of the Wiggles…not really appealing or entertaining.

Well this was another entertaining thread. My 2 cents:

Even as an adult male, I really don’t like certain female outfits. Some are overly revealing (like saying to all mobs, “stab here”); others look like kittentail attire that has no business in the jungle or even the town. A lot of outfits have “trenchcoat syndrome”, and look funny when they sprawl out on the ground while you’re trying to revive someone.

It’s nice that some outfits are “sexy”, but the characters aren’t real, so that kinda kills it for me; they aren’t especially well drawn anyway, in my opinion.

Frankly, I’d just like to put a reasonably covering outfit on my chars (male or female) and keep the same look without it changing every time I buy the next level of armor. I don’t really care for all that constant changing, though I recognize some people prefer it; maybe ANet should add an option to do one or the other.

And on a personal note, I used to play Golden Axe in the the arcades. I beat the game 6 or 8 times before I noticed Ax Battler and Tyris Flare weren’t wearing any armor. Dopey me. [Note: I’m not saying I didn’t see their duds before this, just that I didn’t think too much about it—they’re just video game characters, after all. My point being, I guess, that I personally don’t require abject realism, but I do prefer a certain level of realism…after I had the thought, “Tyris Flare went to a sword fight in a bikini…they didn’t even have bikinis in those days”, it bugged me every time I played GA until the arcades shut down. “Kittentail”? Really? Just because that word for an alcoholic beverage starts with four letter that rhyme with “dock”? We must really be in a situation if that has to be edited. On the bright side, now I know why everyone talks about kittens so much.

My problem with medium/light armor in this game is not even that it seriously lacks skimpy option for male, but that since i see my character from behind all the time, male armors all look the same, long skirts touching the ground with or without fur at the end.
endless stream of butt capes, zero back muscles revealing armor and just 2 pair of trousers in light armor.
I say let our butts be part of this world, free them from their capes and coverage, hell let at least our legs be part of this world.
i would also like more “modern” look like armors. i wouldn’t go to the jungle with a long coat, i would go there with a tank top and a pair of cargo trousers (maybe a short jacket).
I know that this is supposed o be a fantasy setting, but we have laser sword, flying ships, steampunk themes, so why not a modern set of outfit?
and why the hell the tribal armor is no more available to unlock?
and finally, are we compensating something with all those big shoulderpads?
