Q:
Why is auto-loot gated behind masteries
A:
its part of the game. it gives you something worth it to work towards.

No its not “part of the game”. its basic feature that every MMO has that anet has not made ‘part of the game’ unless you GRIND for it.
I find it annoying as well. I have the bar maxed for it and need 4 more mastery points but I haven ’t bothered to try. I am mostly doing WvW anyways and I have that auto loot unlocked.
And how many other masteries would people go to say that they should have outright thus stripping any purpose or need in mastering masteries.

you basically want to remove progression because your impatient? this is a great time to start practicing it.

I’m not sure if your nieve or trolling, but an auto-loot feature is not PROGRESSION.
Its a BASIC feature in every game that anet has locked behind GRIND.
Thats like callling the hang up/end call feature on your cell phone progression where you have to make 800,000 phone calls before they allow you have that feature.

no mastery’s are progression. autoloot is a reward for reaching a milestone in progression. you seem to think just because other mmo’s have it automatically so should GW2 well gw2 isnt other games.

Hate to break it to ya but auto-loot is not EVEN a feature in every game, let alone a basic feature. Dunno what games you’ve been playing but most of the ones I’ve played, MMO or otherwise, don’t even have it included. Add to that the fact that it’s one of the easiest mastery lines to finish makes me wonder who’s really trolling around here.

To be honest I can’t think of an other game that has auto loot in the same manner that GW2 has. Would you mind listing some that you’ve encountered? You say it’s a basic feature that every MMO has, but not even WoW has it, which could be considered the one of the most prolific and successful MMO’s to this day (it has an aoe loot type of option, but it still requires interaction and has basically the same functionality as GW2’s area loot option which is available without masteries).
Honestly speaking, if you’re going to resort to sensationalist claims that can easily be proven false, people will not take you seriously. There’s nothing wrong with making what you feel might be a helpful suggestion, but don’t make the mistake of making false claims in order to try and justify your suggestion, because then it comes across as less credible.
Title says it all. Especially for players like myself that own HOT, it should come free with the expansion at the very least and lock it out from free to play players.
Why should people that bought the base game before it went FTP and own the expansion still not have access to this feature thats locked behind senseless GRIND.
I think Anet stated at some point that it has to do with keeping it (somewhat) out of the hands of bots, since they are unlikely to get the associated mastery.

Then they should just disable it for free to play accounts.
If you think this is a huge grind, you’re going to have serious problems in future with the masteries that are actually affecting gameplay and are needed to progress. This is only fraction of what the other stuff needs.
don’t be lazy kitten . earn it. work for it. others did, so could you.

I just asked a question, which you decided to answer with sarcasm instead of holding onto some form of integrity.
Also, listing an third party add on for WoW doesn’t count because it’s still not a feature implemented by the developers themselves. If we’re going down that road, I can simply tell you to go look or ask for a third party add on for GW2.
Also, you seem to have missed my point when I said your claim was sensationalist. I never said there were no games that had auto loot. What I was calling you out on was that you said that auto loot is, and I quote “a BASIC feature in every game”. This is provably false because I can list plenty of games that do not have it.
The Definition of Sensationalism: The use of exciting or shocking stories or language at the expense of accuracy, in order to provoke public interest or excitement.
You used sensationalism in your comment in order mislead readers into believing something that simply is not true. Now you’re getting iffy because someone is pointing it out. You’re really not going to get very far approaching a debate in this manner, because people are just going to dismiss you for your sarcasm and your melodramatic attitude.
You are fortunate to not have played this game from release, if you think the Auto Auto-loot is a necessity. There was a time when we didn’t even have the regular Auto-loot, much less this no-interaction-necessary feature.
I can’t remember anyone up-in-arms about it, though.
If you are having difficulty earning the 19 Mastery Points necessary to unlock this feature, the Wiki offers a list of Mastery Point Unlocks you can peruse.
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Mastery_point_unlocks#Central_Tyria_mastery_points
You can earn 8 (nearly half) just by doing the Personal Story. Another 1 just by getting a character to L80. Several more at not difficult, in the least.
And if it is the XP that’s worrisome, try Food, Boosters, etc. It goes by quickly.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Just because you’re used to in other games, GW2 should have it, too? I don’t remember skyrim having autoloot.. did I miss something?
The idea is, autoloot is a niche, a nice extra. A reward for people who took the incentive of exploring the world and facing the challenges of the mastery points.

Yep it’s a part except you need to but it (Loot pet ) in most MMO and i rather grind for it.
Just because other games have it given so easily to you doesn’t mean that GW2 should aswell. You should be glad GW2 has it in the first place and that it doesn’t take that long at all to get it. Are you a new player? People from pre-HoT remember having no auto-loot!
By your own admission OP you’ve owned the game since before Aug 2015.
“Why should people that bought the base game before it went F2P”
That’s over a year. In that time you couldn’t get the 19 mastery points of something that you’ve wanted so badly? As said above, you get 9 just from getting to level 80 and by doing the Personal story, leaving you only 10 more to have gotten in the last 14 months. If you want it that badly, do what everyone else in the game who has it has done and go get those points.
The wiki has guides. Check them out.
ANet may give it to you.

There are many things in GW2 that don’t make any sense like this. Including why a game mechanic (has nothing to do with the story) is given during CHARACTER PROGRESSION. What does autoloot have to do with the progression of my character? Nothing.
If they would introduce more mastery points to the core game, I wouldn’t mind. But the points I need to to complete the only mastery left are tied to personal story repeats and a lot of activities that are nothing more than a grind.

People have given you an explanation. At this point, you’re saying you don’t agree with ANet’s design decisions, which is your right. However, if you want to convince them to change their mind about this, I recommend taking the time to understand their point of view.
I don’t think it takes that long to acquire enough masteries to get the critical unlocks and I like that once I do, I’m covered for every toon I have and every new one I create.
I understand the principle you are arguing for — after all, I was among the first people in these forums asking for “true autoloot” since the first BETA. I think it should always be default with any new game, regardless of whether it’s an industry standard. All the same, I also acknowledge that ANet has legitimate reasons for introducing masteries and especially for ensuring that we have some really good ones to work on. (All the Core ones have some really useful, ongoing benefits; a lot of HoT ones have only niche value.)
tl;dr for better or worse, ANet’s chosen their approach and isn’t likely to change just because a few folks are impatient to have the utility.

It is nonsensical to grant access to this type of game mechanic through character progression. That’s like locking the ability to toggle off your head item behind progression (hmm, they did that too). Every character should have the ability to autoloot. The fact that Anet couldn’t think of more appropriate things for character progression isn’t the players’ fault.

It’s a quality of life upgrade. Many games offer these type of upgrades as part of progression. Progression doesn’t have to be focused solely on your character but can also include your experience playing as well.
nonsensical? its a reward for progress, and it appears to be a very desirable reward going by this thread – which is the best kind of reward. There’s no ‘fault’ here its a thing that is part of the reward package you get in GW2.
This is more self entitled nonsense – i see i thing and by golly i deserve it – even other games have it! Whats next, gliding? fractal mastery buffs? al the other things unlocked through Masteries? in fact lets get rid of masteries, lets have no progress/reward model?

You should be more careful before calling something nonsensical. The game mechanic is looting, which is available to any and all characters regardless of account status (F2P, HoT owner, maxed masteries or whatever all of them have access to looting). Autolooting is a QoL upgrade to the mechanic. Autoloot is not the mechanic itself.
Locking QoL upgrades behind character progression is indeed a controversial topic. I don’t have a problem with having autoloot be behind masteries as the masteries are easy to obtain.
I really never had an issue just pushing my loot/interact button every so often… the AE loot is much better then it was on release. I don’t have the auto loot mastery, and honestly it would be one of the last things I’d get just because I really don’t see it being that important.
It’s done this way to prevent new accounts from abusing auto-loot with bots. This was confirmed by ANet back when it was released.

Pressing F to pick up loot manually isn’t such a monumental task you know.. You’re making it seem as if manually pressing F to loot is like going through the 12 labors of Hercules.
If they would introduce more mastery points to the core game, I wouldn’t mind. But the points I need to to complete the only mastery left are tied to personal story repeats and a lot of activities that are nothing more than a grind.
They have added new points to the living story, how about making the next few batches red instead of green.
There are no Mastery Points tied to Personal Story ‘repeats’. One can earn 8 Mastery Points (1 for each Level arc), and 8 MPs only.
Perhaps, you are confusing the Personal Story with the Living World Episodes.

Why do you need more? If you get EVERY mastery point in the game you dan buy everything with .. wiki’s down.
But i can assure you, there’s more green and red madtery pojnts than you can currently use. If you have a shortage youre propably focussing on the harder ones when there are still easy ones
because it wasn’t in the game originally, and when they were thinking of things to add to masteries for things to work toward after maxing the level, they remembered all the suggestions to add autoloot and decided to add it to that

I think it’s fine. Tyrian mastery points are easy enough to acquire and grinding for exp only takes a map completion and maybe a few fractals.
It’s not required to enjoy the game, I used to just have a bind on my mouse to loot everything, and now that I worked for auto loot, I can fight without restriction.
Because they want you to buy HoT. And because it’s worth grinding for. You’ll be happy forever once you get it.
I really enjoyed having something to work towards in the months after HoT came out. It’s a pretty minor thing to have locked away behind a mastery, but it was cool to get as you could feel its effects. Unfortunately the “I want it now!” brigade has been pretty vocal since HoT came out so in the future it looks like the only long term goals we will be given are going to be skins and worthwhile stuff like specialisations, gliding and even auto-loot are just going to be handed out with minimal fuss.
And how many other masteries would people go to say that they should have outright thus stripping any purpose or need in mastering masteries.
All of them please. I’m sick of leveling. I want to play the game.

OMG. and why costs gear something why gear isnt for free?! thats unfair?!
U guys qq about everything..
What the game really needs is a free gold mastery.
Once you master this you can simply stand around doing nothing and the amount of gold you have just slowly gets bigger all the time.
Fantastic.
For people who want to play the game without actually having to do anything.
Developers stated that they debated internally whether or not to add autoloot at all, because automating frequently used actions like this makes botters jobs easier and the security teams job harder.
And in the end locking it behind a mastery was the compromise they came to.

This so much.
HoT mastery points are so easy to accumulate I’d imagine many people are drowning in excess green points right now.
Red points are so much harder especially if you also max out Legendary and Fractal masteries…
The OP has a point, but then again it took me like a couple of SW maps to farm. It’s a matter of a couple of hours – really…

Even i got the pve autoloot feature, and i barely pve.

Don’t argue with idiots, they pull you down their level and own you with experience.
And here I was, thinking that that autoloot thing was utterly superfluous to me and of little interest.
I’ve gotten so used to killing things and hitting F to snag up my shinies that I sometimes find myself doing it in other games, and that’s occasionally hilarious.
No. I don’t care about autoloot. I’ll just hit F forever and feel as though I have a meaningful input on what random usually-trash gets strudled about in my bags.
