Why is auto-loot gated behind masteries
If they would introduce more mastery points to the core game, I wouldn’t mind. But the points I need to to complete the only mastery left are tied to personal story repeats and a lot of activities that are nothing more than a grind.
They have added new points to the living story, how about making the next few batches red instead of green. There are no Mastery Points tied to Personal Story ‘repeats’. One can earn 8 Mastery Points (1 for each Level arc), and 8 MPs only.
Perhaps, you are confusing the Personal Story with the Living World Episodes.
Sorry, mixed up the story label. (but playing the personal story with races I haven’t used would also qualify—but would have to buy character slots). But the point is when I look at what I need to get 8 more MPs, I see nothing but grinds, obscure collections, repeating each episode many times for a to get 1 point. A few more points added to the core game maps would be easy to do. My mistake was picking the legendary mastery with my MPs instead of the auto-loot.
Developers stated that they debated internally whether or not to add autoloot at all, because automating frequently used actions like this makes botters jobs easier and the security teams job harder.
And in the end locking it behind a mastery was the compromise they came to.
That makes sense. Still though, I would have preferred to see it maybe a level of MPs earlier. A bot will not get there but it would not hold up humans who have put time in in any mode. Getting the MPs for that last level was not automatic because I do plenty of PVE but had skipped the living story (I came in partway through season 2 so it was a what-is-the-point).

If you done personal story with 1 char 1-80 you wont get any more points for doing other races.

Doing the PS on another race does not give you more points. The wiki goofed how they said that at first and I went back and forth with support for months trying to find my ‘missing’ points.

But i can assure you, there’s more green and red madtery pojnts than you can currently use. If you have a shortage youre propably focussing on the harder ones when there are still easy ones
Thanks for the updated info about the other race options.
HoT completed. When I look at the list of what I need to do to 8 more points form the core areas , there is nothing left left that isn’t a major grind, (except for gold collection in silver wastes), obscure collections. I would complete dive master, but the WvW griefers add to the difficulty.
When you see the new the MPs in the new living story maps, they are basically find
them and get to them. I have more Hot MPs than I can use. More of those type added to the Central Tyria maps would welcome.

playing a new race and their personal story which would involve buying more character spaces.
Again as others have stated, the personal story mastery points can only be earned once. Doing it again on another race will not reward more points. That said, I do wish they would add more mastery points to core.

Plus more mastery tracks. I have pact commander maxed, do not run fractals, and have no plans to forge a legendary any time soon.

I doubt they are going to add more mastery tracks to core Tyria. They are looking outwards, not back. In addition, any track needs a final reward to make it worthwhile and any worthwhile reward will be put in the newest areas. Putting a useful reward in core Tyra means they can’t use it in a new area but have to come up with another useful reward.
ANet may give it to you.
Hate to break it to ya but auto-loot is not EVEN a feature in every game, let alone a basic feature. Dunno what games you’ve been playing but most of the ones I’ve played, MMO or otherwise, don’t even have it included. Add to that the fact that it’s one of the easiest mastery lines to finish makes me wonder who’s really trolling around here.
In the previous MMO I played before GW2 auto-loot was a cash-shop item.
Then they should just disable it for free to play accounts.
It is disabled for free accounts already, and paid accounts without HoT. It’s one of the smaller incentives to buy HoT in the first place.
All you have to do in GW2 is press F to get your loot until you earn your masteries. Other MMOs you have to stand on top of it first, where there’s a risk you’ll miss some good loot you didn’t see needed picking up.
If GW2 including everything that every other MMO had, it wouldn’t be GW2 anymore.
If GW2 including everything that every other MMO had, it wouldn’t be GW2 anymore.
It seems that a lot of people have a hard time understanding this.

HoT mastery points are so easy to accumulate I’d imagine many people are drowning in excess green points right now.
Red points are so much harder especially if you also max out Legendary and Fractal masteries…
There are plenty of MP in core tyria. Not all of them are supposed to be trivial to achieve, you should have to put effort in to max all of the masteries. Besides, what this really comes down to is which mastery line is more important to you? Being able to craft the new legendaries or autoloot? If autoloot is more important than legendary crafting to anyone in this thread, yet they maxed leg crafting first and are now hurting for mastery points, I don’t know what to tell you other than plan stuff out better.
More people saying how easy it is to get all the Masteries: LOL. Keep in mind that only a small percentage of any MMO’s players use the forums (usually <>10%). And those people are usually players who are most dedicated to the game.
I’ll bet that GW2 has been bleeding casual players since HoT.
There are 49 mastery points in core tyria.
There 67 mastery points available, so you can abandon 18 points.
If you want a big chunk of points, do the three wurms, tequatl, shatterer and karka achievements. Extremely easy on a populated map. Look for GW2community summons for the wurms. They still do TT every day.
LS2, a lot of easy achievements in fractals, complete act I, II, III on every race..
Long story short, plenty of easy options: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Mastery_point_unlocks

No Mastery Points are predicated on race. If the above refers to the Personal Story (Act I, II, III), no need to complete said Acts more than once.

Every game bleeds players after every major update, expansion, release, etc. It’s not really a meaningful bet.

I’ve maxxed legendary and have max experience for both fractal and pact commander. I currently require 11 core mastery points to finish off.
On the other hand I’ve maxxed all HoT masteries and (I can’t check exact amount because not at computer right now) have more than a handful of green points building up, which just keep increasing with every living world release. It’s so kitten easy to earn HoT mastery points.
The only remaining core mastery points for me are locked behind living story achievements, stupid achievements like Dive Master and unlocking every single cultural armour.
I personally don’t care much for autoloot or accessing mistlock singularities, however in my eyes it is far far easier to gain way more HoT mastery points than necessary than it is to gain enough core tyria mastery points because they’re accessible through easier achievements.

100% two thumbs up. I am in the same virtually the same position.
Heck look at the spoons—completed TeQ more times that I remember and the only spoon I have are wooden ones. The RNG is so messed up I will never complete that collection.
And how many other masteries would people go to say that they should have outright thus stripping any purpose or need in mastering masteries.
All of them please. I’m sick of leveling. I want to play the game.
You know, you dont have to play this game
I said I want to play the game, not that I have to. Is everything ok?
Why is autoloot time gated?
Time gating is the carrot dangled before the horse. Don’t let anyone try to say that it’s for balance or progression. It’s meant to keep you playing in hopes that one day you’ll swipe a credit card, at least once. It’s an old tactic practiced by casinos and grocery stores. Keep people inside long enough and they’ll buy something. Keep you playing long enough and you’ll swipe that card.
This is where words are dangerous. Autoloot is indeed a feature of Guild Wars 2. You can set your account to autoloot and even group loot a feature that not every game has. What you’re talking about is actually quick loot a feature most games don’t have.
I’m not sure why you think autoloot isn’t a feature everyone gets, because everyone does get it. All they have to do is enable it in their options panel.

In the Middle Ages such a person would burn you at the stake, you know. But luckily nowadays fanatics can only use arguments like ‘you don’t have to’ or ‘you aren’t forced to’. So, if an innocent opinion of yours has triggered somebody on the forums to behave in a passive-agressive manner, you know the answer. =)

No, the OP is correct in terminology. Autoloot is gated behind masteries. A quick look at the options screen makes this clear. And there doesn’t appear to be any other confusion in this thread about what feature he’s talking about. Also, there’s no such thing as “quick loot” in GW2. Or least, nothing called that in the game. Calling his words dangerous because you think they are incorrect is unnecessary hyperbole.

Yes, and no.

There’s more than one auto-loot. There’s the subcategory “quick interact” (which is what he undoubtably meant by “quick loot”) and the subcategory of auto loot called “auto pickup”, which is the subject of this thread.

It’s just yes, actually.
I know exactly what it says in the game. The OP is talking about autoloot gated behind masteries. This is an accurate statement. Everyone here seems to understand exactly what he is referring to. If not, they could just ask for clarification, but the OP’s statement remains correct.
As for “quick loot.” If someone is going to question someone else on accuracy, they should at least hold themselves to the same standards. Thus, for this argument, I stand by there not being a “quick loot” in GW2.
Finally, to be more precise, what he is talking about is “Autoloot: Quick Interact.” This is the feature behind mastery gating. But this all semantics and doesn’t matter because it doesn’t change the argument that the OP is making. It certainly isn’t dangerous.
(edited by DaShi.1368)
Regardless of semantics, several reasons have been given as to why this feature is gated behind masteries. I’m in a similar position to the OP in not having enough points to complete the track, but I knew this was a possibility when I focussed on the legendary track first and I’m okay with going out of my comfort zone to earn the last few points I need.
And how many other masteries would people go to say that they should have outright thus stripping any purpose or need in mastering masteries.

You want to play the game, just not its contents, then?
Y’all can keep arguing about definitions. The (paraphrased) question was “why is the feature that enables looting without interacting gated behind the mastery system?” That’s been answered.
At this point the OP (and others) simply don’t like that answer, as is their right.
Seriously :o i can’t believe you are not happy with this.
When auto loot was first introduced we were all screaming in joy. It’s still one of best add-on. Not sure why it’s so hard for some players to unlock mastery..? Am I missing something?

I didn’t feel like it was a grind to get Central Tyria Mastery Points at all. Sorry you think it is, and don’t like that, but the check list for these points are exactly the same for everyone else. Most of us muddled through the LS 2 achievements, others went out of their way trying to find Triple Trouble maps, doing Fractals and spending a ton of gold.
(I already had all MPs needed for Central masteries as soon as HoT went live, but I enjoyed getting those achievements at the time. So it worked out for people like me anyway.)
As people keep saying this was just a way of keeping people playing, and Advanced Logistics was one of the best masteries added. To have something so useful that core/f2p players don’t have. It is a big carrot to have, the same with it’s WvW counterpart, Provisions Master.
Also,
I would complete dive master, but the WvW griefers add to the difficulty.
There are no dive spots located in WvW that count towards this achievement, they are all in Tyria. This quote alone, tells me that you didn’t even research the ease of some of these achievements.
Well, if you’re going to quibble about quick loot versus quick interact then I’ll quibble that everyone might know what he means but technically auto loot was put in a long time ago. First was the need to stand on top of the sparkle to loot. Then they gave us AOE autoloot on interact. Then with Masteries was AOE autoloot without interact.
So I was pointing out that if anyone was going to be a stickler about it, the terminology used by the OP was not correct. Correct would have been “auto pickup” not autoloot, as we already have had autoloot for a couple of years.
I’m actually not being a stickler about terminology. You and Vayne are. I’m merely pointing out the inconsistencies and unfairness now present in that approach. For example, the term in the game that the OP is talking about is called Autoloot. Look it up. I don’t know why neither of you have before making these kinds of statements. And I don’t know what else to say about this because 1. it’s a verifiable statement and 2. it doesn’t change the OP’s argument. It does defend the OP against unfair criticisms of being called dangerous though. That should never have been said.
I was being a sticker because Vayne made a wrong statement and then you made a wrong statement when you corrected him. So I pointed out that both of you were incorrect.
But my statement wasn’t wrong. It’s called Autoloot. Reinstall the game and check it out.
I’ll bet that GW2 has been bleeding casual players since HoT.
Every game bleeds players after every major update, expansion, release, etc. It’s not really a meaningful bet.
Sorry, I didn’t think I had to spell out “because of Masteries” in addition to the normal number of players who leave.

If you think it doesn’t matter that GW2 locks a common MMO option behind in-game grinding then you are fooling yourself.

I don’t know how that’s possible, since if it doesn’t matter to them, then it doesn’t bother them, so how can they be fooling themselves?
Why is this topic still going! Op already got his answer several times on page 1 (ignoring the fact he didnt like the answer). This thread has derailed into a sabbath of opinions and semantics.
Because auto-loot is a reward — not a necessity. WvW auto-loot also requires progression to unlock – so ANet is consistent

That’s pretty much it. The only people fooling themselves are the ones that use other MMO’s as a yardstick to compare to GW2. Anet doesn’t compare themselves to other MMO’s, they try their own ideas and GW2 does lots of things other MMO’s don’t and vice versa. Many of those things are quite novel and you benefit from those things all the time when you play it. If people want the typical MMO and it’s features, GW2 isn’t their game to play.

Don’t insult our intelligence. This isn’t comparing features to make a choice to pay for something vs. something else. Besides … in other MMO’s you pay for it. Here you don’t … so if you want to claim it’s about comparing, well, GW2 sounds like the better option.

1) its your own assumption its a basic feature.
2) plenty of games have mechanics you need to earn. Shouts in skyrim. Shots in rayman. TM’s in pokemon, nothings ever handed out.
3) it adds to fun to have a meaningful reward behind a challenge. Why would you have challenges and not have meaningful rewards?
Do you want a button that unlocks all legendaries, gives you 150AR, fully unlocked wvw skills and a ‘press to win’button for pvp?

No, not really. Some games don’t offer “basic” features, some games only offer them as paid-DLC. Some games offer some basic features and ask you to pay or earn upgrades.
In this game, the first 130 inventory slots are free — you pay gold and/or gems to get more slots. In this game, Area-of-Effect looting is standard and no-interact looting is a one-time account unlock for dedicated players.

2) plenty of games have mechanics you need to earn. Shouts in skyrim. Shots in rayman. TM’s in pokemon, nothings ever handed out.
3) it adds to fun to have a meaningful reward behind a challenge. Why would you have challenges and not have meaningful rewards?
1. Well, it doesn’t affect plot or provide any meaningful reward, then it’s basic feature. Developers made the game cumbersome and now they’re asking money to make it not so. That’s all there is to it.
2. Those are plot elements so that you can’t just walk straight to final boss and finish the game.
3. Challenge is something like “beat the final boss” or “finish a level without dying”, but farming anything is not a challenge. Rewards are shiny badges, new moves, pieces of equipment and recognition. Whether or not you have to spam F every time something dies is a matter of design. There’s nothing fun about spamming F.
Do you want a button that unlocks all legendaries, gives you 150AR, fully unlocked wvw skills and a ‘press to win’button for pvp?
I don’t.
No, not really. Some games don’t offer “basic” features, some games only offer them as paid-DLC. Some games offer some basic features and ask you to pay or earn upgrades.
That’s a racket dressed as game. Targets are people who become invested and feel the need to pay small sums of money to “get ahead” of others. I’d have to wait 20 hours to finish this upgrade or give them 10 dollars. I’ll give them 10 dollars instead.
Hit and sink.

if you dont find autoloot a meaningful reward, then what was this whole topic for

No? You can completely neglect them as you want. Theyre convenience skills

spamming f is what you call it. Its just a normal loot button ALL games have. Why you find it such a chore is completely beyond me, you dont have to spam it. Just kill a creature and click f. Youre gonna break your keyboard if youre contously ramming the F key. You can also wait to see if the corpse sparkles or not before you gently press the F keyDo you want a button that unlocks all legendaries, gives you 150AR, fully unlocked wvw skills and a ‘press to win’button for pvp?

Serious question. Have you ever played another game? Like, at all? Skyrim, warcraft, guild wars 1? No game ive ever played allowed you to kill creatures and pick up loot without doing literally anything. Everygame i know so far has at the very least required you to click on the corpse or walk over the corpse. Being able to pilfer corpses from 10 feet away without any interaction whatsoever is something pretty new, at least not as i have ever seen it before.
