Q:

Mayhaps I’m missing something, but time-gating this seems a little, pointless and “unfun
So why is this time-gated (via quartz crystal)?
The only purpose I can think of is that it was designed to test the time gating system on ascended items, which itself should only have been temporary anyways to prevent parts the community from getting ascended and leaving everyone else in the dust… all of which is fine, but kinda lame, and now long after… pointless.
So am I missing something or is there some ginormous reason as to why we can’t remove a pointless time-gate?

A:

Celestial is time-gated because a long time ago it used to be the best armor in the game. Not only did you get a higher overall stat increase than the other armors, you also got a huge boost in Magic Find too. But Anet nerfed Celestial and removed the MF bonus from the armor. So I agree, Celestial shouldn’t be time-gated anymore.

It appears that the number of players logged per day is an important statistic for ArenaNet, hence the introduction of so many things that are gated to once per day. You should be happy that they haven’t time gated the other crafting materials required for exotic crafting.

Even though they never confirmed it, I agree that it was a test run for ascended timegates. That being said, I see why certain items are timegated and I dont think they should remove it after a couple of months or a year.
And considering that Anet used charged quartz in more recipes since the introduction of celestial (grow lamp, charged ambrite) I dont think they will remove the time gate anytime soon.

I don’t see that celestial crafting affects anything but a tiny tiny tiny portion of the population, to the point where I would suggest more people are tempted to give up the game and leave for other games because of the amount of time required to get exotics (not even ascended). Which is restrictive, and demotivating rather than as a positive thing that encourages players to stick around.

Grow lamp looks like an item that was intended to be made once and thus time gate doesn’t matter

Yet another restriction for exotic equipment, that prevents players from experimenting, and trying new things. (prevents players from getting sinister setups within reasonable times)

In the past it had the same critical damage as an exotic berserker piece plus magic find. Meaning it was the best exotic piece stat wise and loot wise (for exotic at least), especially since the zerker mentallity was not as spread a now. So I think they added a gate to make sure that celestial gear would not become to easy to acquire.

Which itself no longer applies, which is why I’m asking, why is it STILL time-gated

One reason why timegates are in game is to add value to the time-gated crafting material. If you charge your daily crystal, you can sell it atm for a profit of 40-100s, if you take away the time-gate, it will influence those profits.

Its basically a daily reward for people who log in every day.

I dont know why Anet should change their game in order to cater for an audience that stops playing because it has to log in frequently.

The charged item is account bound, thus nullifiying this arguement, but it does bring up an additional possibility, what if the crystals weren’t account bound (like their uncharged predecessors) that would create a new market, and gold sink.

Its basically a daily reward for people who log in every day.

Irrelevant

*stop playing, because of restrictions which hinder their ability to… try new things… oh wait, that’s why traits were changed to be swappable…. for that very reason because that’s a sizeable chunk of their player-base people who like to experiment.. gw2 is and i quote “all about bringing down those walls”

Oh I agree he’s right to, but I would like anet to actually consider rethinking the time-gate on this, or atleast find an alternate resource from which celestial can be crafted without a time-gate

Sheets of charged ambrite and grow lamps are not account bound, and can be sold for a profit of about 40s (charged ambrite) or 1g (grow lamp) per charged quartz. I assume that’s what Wanze was talking about.

Colin Johanson: "Everyone, including casual gamers, by level 80 should have the
best statistical loot in the game. We want everyone on an equal power base.”
Pre-launch, Colin listed things that make MMOs bad. They are all now in GW2.
