Why is everything time gated?
~ Whips ~ City Minigames ~ City Jumping Puzzles ~
to you it might not be a problem because you unlike some you dont have 6+ characters to gear up so thats a month per character now in my case i ll have 8 characters soon so thats a Minimum of 12 months to fully gear all of them Assuming i had all the materials required wich i dont so that easily bumps the time a few months up .
WRONG. I have 12 characters i need to make ascended armor and weapons for as well as backpacks. When i want to. I also have another 2 characters that arent level 80 yet, and another 2 when HOT drops that will be Revenants.
I have no objection to time gated content. However, it does go against Anet’s own philosophy (unless of course that philosophy has now changed).
A while back Anet said that they believed players should be able to spend either time or money in order to get the things they want. If you wanted full top tier gear you should be able to spend in game time or out of game money in order to get it. With most things in the game that works fine, but it doesn’t work for laurels, and therefore ascended gear.
My suggestion would be to add laurel packs in the gem store, to allow those will little time the option to spend money instead. The problem there of course is that those with lots of time also have lots of ingame gold to convert to gems, and they would end up being able to get even more laurels. But I do not see this as a problem so long as the time restricted had an avenue to speed up their progress with money. It is not a race after all and different players will always progress at different paces.
At the end of the day, ascended gear is not that vital for the most part. I only have 1 character (almost) fully geared in ascended, and I do not struggle to do things with those that are in exotics only. But it would be nice if Anet could offer a means to use money to get laurels, as well as time, so that they can fully live up to their time/money philosophy.

Does anybody care to make a list of GW2 features that are time-gated… versus those that are not?
Everything would include everything right?
But it takes time for the light to travel from the screen to your eyes, then time for the nerves to trigger, then time to get a responce to that trigger, then time to have that responce acted apon by your body, then time for that action to be forwarded from your keyboard to the computer to the internet to the server to be processed and then sent back through the loop.
So yeah everything is time gated.

I guess we’d have to define" time-gating." If we’re talking about things like recipes that can only be made once a day but you need more than one to craft certain items, then I don’t think there are many recipes in the game like that.
If by “time-gating” you mean something takes time to acquire, then yeah, most things in the game are time-gated since many items like legendaries, ascended gear, dungeon sets, PvP/WvW ranks and achievements, even a lot of mins and skins, etc. will take time to acquire.

This is called “time gate”.

This is called “requires effort”.
Getting that 1 piece of armor that drops only from specific mob in a specific location when planets allign is called “grinding”.
3 simple things that many people do not understand.

Of course everything is time-gated. Breathing is time-gated. It takes time to play and run to locations and build up resources. But that’s not what OP means.
OP means recipes and acquisition methods that are gated by ANet in addition to the natural limitations of playing any game (or being alive…).
Off the top of my head:
- rewards from dailies
- daily crafting, limited to ascended mats and some Mawdrey components
- charging quartz crystal
- world boss rewards
- cheesing out points in hotjoin
- daily bonus rewards from dungeon paths and fractal tiers
However, you can still DO or acquire almost all of these things, you just don’t get the daily special bonus reward for them. (Yes, even the ascended mats – you can simply buy them on the TP.) The only thing that is genuinely time-gated (and not just an additional bonus that you get once a day) is charging quartz. Oh, and it’s a shame that you can’t play your favourite activity every day of the week. So that’s 2 things, I guess.
Imagine a game in which you could only level up once a day, charm one pet per day, or other things would be time-gated such as dying armor pieces, using Asura portals, spawning world bosses, crafting account-bound (as opposed to TP-buyable) materials, taking part in activities, using tonics, or entering dungeons/fractals. Then, yes, I would complain about “everything” being time-gated, too…

Timegating Ascended gear? Well I guess sure w/e, maybe there’s some reason to timegate top-tier gear.
Timegating Charged Quartz Crystals? Why do I have to wait 30 days of converting quartz crystals to craft a set of Celestial armor? No other armor requires me to wait 30 days for a full set of exotic armor…
Because when charged quartz crystals came out they were used for Celestial armors which was the “new” armor at the time (since they gave bonuses on 7 stats not just 3) and so to prevent wealthy players from getting them on day one, charging was limited to once daily. And by account binding it and the armor’s creation, it was a reward that if you want, you and only you had to work for it.
It was sort of the test case for ascended.

Ascended gear is not time-gated. You can get everything you need and craft a full set right here and now. The only thing that is time-gated is the bonus that you save some money if you craft everything yourself as opposed to buying it off the trading post. Except if you want to craft a celestial ascended set.
Celestial stats are treated differently for historical reasons. When they were introduced (as craftable), the stats set included Magic Find – which made the stat combo very popular for farming armor sets. That was before the introduction of Ascended armor. When ANet went ahead and removed Magic Find from the armor (and introduced account-wide Magic Find instead), they couldn’t very well change the system by which charged quartz is acquired, because so many players had already put in the effort. And so that’s where the stat set remains. It still holds a special place among the stat sets, so in my opinion it’s not the end of the world that it is treated in this special way.
Either way, that’s really only one time-gated thing in an ocean of things that are available to use 24/7.

Timegated =/= slow.
Timegated means nothing’s stopping you from getting something, but an arbitrary and imposed time limitation.
Slow isn’t arbitrary – it’s just slow. The nature of the proccess requires time to mature/complete, but that’s not forcibly imposed or arbitrary.
If it takes me 3h to make soup, that’s just slow. If my oven will only work once a day, that’s timegated.
