Why is it called "Guild Wars"?
The Guild Wars are the series of at least three wars among different guilds in the three human kingdoms of Ascalon, Kryta, and Orr. The wars ended only because the charr invasion from the north meant an even bigger threat to the three kingdoms.
The second Guild War was memorialized by the construction of Surmia in 1020 AE. Ascalon was the kingdom victorious of this war according to the Historical Monument of Surmia. It is unlikely that the war ended during 1020 AE, however, due to the length of the latest Guild War.
The most recent Guild War lasted for 57 years (from 1013 AE until 1070 AE). The war caused much suffering and hatred between the people of the three kingdoms. These old wounds can be seen in the present day in the form of the mistrust King Adelbern holds towards the efforts of Kryta to help Ascalon recover from the charr invasion, particularly towards Ambassador Zain. During this war, King Adelbern was a war hero which led to his eventual crowning as a king instead of Barradin becoming king.
While there have been many Guild Wars prior to this one, when characters in the game refer to the Guild War, they mean the last one which ended with the Searing. While initially confined to a conflict between guilds, when open combat erupted in the streets of Arah, Orr responded to protect its holy city. The military action against Krytan and Ascalonian guilds spurred the other nations into responding, leading to open conflict between the three nations.
kitten Google is hard.
Actually, GW was named that way because Anet intended pvp to be the end game. It was not named after the lore; the lore was based on that. Anet stated that before Prophecies was released, and reiterated it during the Factions championships. It’s the reason Prophecies and Factions have so much oriented around pvp in them.
Also, you can run tournaments in sPvP that would allow guilds to fight other guilds. You could technically look at WvW as GvG as well since there are guilds on each side fighting each other.
Was a lore event, It happened before GW1 started.
It is short for Guild War"rior"’s …….hence why you see all the warriors running around.
I never played Guild Wars 1 but I do remember reading a very long interview/article while the original game was in development. The design intent at that time was centered around a player based world where their actions impacted everything. The game as I understood it was supposed to be centered around Player vs Player and Guild vs Guild pvp where guilds could take over and manage entire cities and other guilds would try to invade etc. The went into detail about how they were aiming for ship vs ship battels on the open sea etc. Not sure how far GW1 went with that it was probably one of the coolest design intents I’d ever read about but got caught up with RL so didn’t ever play. That’s where the original name came from it’s a fanchise now so it makes sense to stick with it even if GW2 doesn’t reflect that original design intent at all.
SPVP …there are guilds fighting guilds.
WvW there are many guilds fighting against many guilds.
Not sure what it is you are looking for…….
Pay attention to the story so you’ll know why it’s called Guild Wars :P
Because “Cannibal Women In The Avocado Jungle Of Death” made no sense, and World Of Warcraft was already taken.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
Doesn’t matter what the initial intention was during the development of Guild Wars 1, that is completely irrelevant. All that matter is what is released when the game releases. When GW1 released, Guild Wars was in reference to the event that happened before GW1 began, despite what was the initial intention was when development began.

I’d play the kitten out of that game.
Cannibal Women, not World of Warcraft that is.

So you don’t think the design intent they had during the time they named the game had any impact on the name? That would be amazing if true especially when the name they decided on matches perfectly to the original design intent.

The most simple answer is this game is a sequel to Guild Wars. Thus, the inclusion of the “2”. Since this question has been answered, this thread will be closed now.
