Even after all these years the roleplay crowd is still super closed off and cliquey.
Why?
It feels like it’s the worst on this game compared to others where you can easily jump into RP.
But the RP community on here feels cliquey, closed off, and generally unwelcoming to anyone not already in their circle.
I’ve been in a few RP guilds and even then they still feel unwelcoming.
What is up with that?
Any RP guilds that aren’t like that?
Anyone else feel this way?

I met just one Rplayer in 1023 days.

There are actually quite an abundance of them out there.
They just seem to be getting rarer as the days go by.

If I were to hazard a guess? They’re “cliquish” and “closed off” because they kicked around and trolled so often that they’ve become cynical and jaded towards outsiders.

But that’s just a guess. Could very well be wrong.

  • The game has next to no roleplay tools.
  • Several updates have even hurt the ability to roleplay.
  • They’re an endangered species, slowly fading away.

That would be why they’re often hiding and keep to themselves. As for being unwelcoming, I’ve never experienced that. Quite the opposite. Just need to keep looking, maybe head to one of the roleplay websites to find a group you’ll get on with (I can’t remember the names off the top of my head, unfortunately).

Anet purposely killed PvE server identity and roleplaying with the introduction of megaservers and made no effort to salvage it even the slightest (like having core zones be server specific).

In the good old days being on a roleplaying designated server could be hilarious. I remember seeing 10 player patrols walking down the roads in Gendarran Fields, lol. Or the slightly more disturbing times of accidentally walking into a certain tavern cellar in Queensdale and seeing 10 naked people in there…

Nowadays its just a rush for daily events.

The megaserver was the biggest impetus to “closing off.” Though even now there’s plenty of RP in DR, the Grove, and Rata Sum (it might help me that I’m on Tarnished Coast and there has been some improvement in the megaserver’s ability to stick me in maps with other TC people). There may well be in Hoelbrak and the Black Citadel as well, but I don’t spend so much time there.

Soon after the megaserver’s debut, however, it was nearly impossible to get large groups of RPers together without a lot of taxi work. Even then a lot of griefers and trolls showed up, so put out by us daring to be creative that they had to aoe the crap out of us, toss in their own pornographic commentary, dance naked in the middle of serious discussions, etc (none of which is creative at all, it’s been the anti-rp tool of choice for, well, tools, since the dawn of MMO’s).

So until trust is gained that you’re not out to ruin someone’s fun, people are likely to edge slowly away from strangers so they can keep on playing with proven decent folks.

If you want to find RPers, check the cities, just lurk and listen for a bit to find those who do it in the style you prefer, then approach them — either by adding your own RP non-intrusively to theirs where it makes sense or by OOC contact to ask if you may join — and see if that works. Also you can go to the LFG part of the forums, or check out sites like guildwars2roleplayers.com for RP guilds.

In the past week or so I’ve been working on world exploration to get skill point challenges done in preparation for the upcoming specialization changes. In this time I’ve seen quite a lot of RP groups out in the middle of no where. I think the reason you don’t see them much is because they find secret corners of the world to do their thing undisturbed, which makes sense because it is so easy to troll and ruin their experience.

Mainly because we are constantly getting trolled, made fun of, called idiots and nerds who dont have lives(rofl at that one) Or otherwise being messed with. When i first was trying to get into RPing i just watched a group for a few days and talked to them in whispers. It took them abit to gain my trust enough.

There is actually quite a community of us, but we stay off to ourselves and usually stay quiet.

The reason? Because groups try to be exclusive, yet wanting others to join to who share the same passion and experience. However, there are other players who want to ruin their experience. And this isn’t because of this game. It is a generality in any MMORPGs. People want to immerse themselves and experience every aspect of the game. It is a way to get away from RL for a bit. Because when you read books, did you not want to be the protagonist? Did you find yourself wanting to at least be a character in the book? With games, did you get a sensation, especially when you were younger, that you are playing such a role and eager to experience everything that it has to offer? It is the same for those who enjoy the RP element of such MMOs. Yes, “closed off” because they do not want to deal with those who rather spend their time harassing others because they have nothing else better to do. Does that make them snobbish? Does that make them appear to be elite and above everyone else? It does. But it is a defense mechanism. Roleplay is something fun to do. Just as it is fun to play the game and explore or complete personal stories. It is another escape. What I do wish is more interactivity that would enhance the RP experience. But alas, that will not happen. There is another MMO that allows that. However, GW2, has a very good lore, history, and elements which could actually be enhanced and make the RP crowd more appealing and the experience.

Anyways….those are my opinions.

Honestly, that’s a silly excuse to seem so closed off and cliquish.
These things happen in quite literally every MMO ever. Trolls will be trolls. And many games do not support RP.
But those communities even do not close off themselves to /other rpers/.
Things like that kill off RP communities more so than the trolls that you can ignore. :/

Except, the RP community has always been small in this game from what i gather. Trolls kill off the RP community, not the closed nature of it. Our guild is constantly growing, we get 1-2 new members every couple weeks. Of course we only take people over 18 and we have strict rules too. So no us being closed off isnt a bad thing, we are open to anyone who wants to RP, so long as the follow the rules presented and dont respond to trolls. I know of at least 10 RP guilds in game, that i have seen and interacted with, and every few weeks a few new ones pop up.

as for closing ourselves to other RPrs, i havent honestly seen that, unless the person tries to hijack our current RP. Which has happened before. If other Rprs where maybe considerate to ask before walking up and intruding it wouldnt happen(Not that it does often, ive only had it happen once). A few days ago i was RPing out a more emotional part of my characters story and somebody just waltzed in, right as i was doing it and started talking over me, and then they got mad when i asked them to leave, because they intruded and started talking over me. I have been very leery of other players now because of that. But that was one instance, one out of my 4 months of RPing.

The pvp community reminds me of what Obi-kittenenobi describes Mos Eisley as from star wars.

Yet I find in other MMO’s there are dedicated RP servers. There are more games out there than you think that support that. But what I am saying is that there is a degree of cynicism and suspicion. That is why you have some “closed off” or seemingly is that way. There are alot of RP guilds in GW2. Some very small, some medium, some large. The one I am in..medium and growing. We are open to those who want to RP and add another element to the game and to their character’s experience. We provide a stage for them to….‘perform’ and we have fun doing it. We have a separate combat system used for combat RP. It makes it fun. And not everyone shares that concept.

Are you Piken Square or Tarnished Coast? Because I can promise you that roleplayers on Piken Square are certainly not cliquey. I can’t say for certain about Tarnished Coast, since I’m not on there.

Also, I would recommend to anyone who is struggling to find RP simply first of all, ask politely in map chat if there are any RP guilds (in Piken Square at least, nobody will bite your head off) and also try joining http://www.guildwars2roleplayers.com if you haven’t already done so, as there’s an RP guild directory.

About 15 minutes ago, two people came into map chat saying “wow, so many RPers!” as they had just joined Piken Square for WvW reasons. We welcomed them with open arms.

I wish I could help you then, I’ve never been to TC sorry. But still try my advice anyway, the gw2rp site has in the Forums a directory that’s divided into PS and TC sections, with recruiting guilds there showing their RP descriptions, to make it a little easier to find the type of RP you’re looking for.

All the RPers I’ve met have been very friendly, many tend to hang out in the cities and the buildings in the maps you can freely enter (such as the hunting lodge in Queensdale). RP tends to always be quite closed off compared to normal play regardless of the game you pick, with exception to those games that have official dedicated RP servers

My guild is actually pretty welcoming. We ignore the trolls, but if someone approaches curiously and respectfully, we let them know what’s going on.

Of course, we also try to do it in not-as-public areas. From personal experience, I find I’m more interested in groups that are out and about than the ones who sit languishing in a bar having “CW romance dramas.”

And, I’ll be honest, I’ve seen some bad RP out there. >_>" Usually in Rata Sum, Black Citadel, or the Grove. Rata Sum and Grove are especially bad, because the emote radius is huge, so then you start listening in on cringe-worthy dialogue.
There’s no way to avoid it. So I wonder if that might be one of the reasons people get trolled, sometimes.

Y’know what would be awesome? RP chat in the same vein as map chat. Or more functionally like /say and /emote for range, but limited to that specific channel.

- Anet doesn’t give a rat’s *@% about role players.

- A troll’s money is just as good as an Rpe’rs money, so trolls are overlooked.

- The megaserver was promised to have “metrics” that would put people who grouped together on a constant basis on the same map. – Nope.jpg. – Role players still have to taxi each other to the Rp shard. Guild members are even split up on maps and that’s just for PvE content.

- Rp’ers have one zone that’s sectioned off for RP and that’ the beach at Southsun. It strips all of your clothes and armor off, leaving you vulnerable to trolls who can kite the elite just around the corner and kill everyone there.

- Anet “fixes” problems by calling it a line of sight bug instead of actually phasing and coding correctly, thus removing any sort of player housing from Rp’ers, and have yet to still implement player housing after 2 years while most MMO’s come with it standard.

- Two years later, guild halls are announced in an expansion that could be used for RP, when GW1 came with them standard.

And the sad thing is that we; Rp’ers have been here for a long time and yet we’re still crapped on in our own genre. MMORolePlayingGame.

As far as I can tell, they are not very fond of criticism. So if you are not very fond of making up stuff that goes against the setting of the game, like a player claiming to be Inquest, or some race they are not (e.g.: Orc, elf, etc), or to have killed Queen Jennah, you won’t fit well with them.

So, if you are not willing to accept any made-up nonsense that won’t fit the setting of the game even in a fractal and expect people to actually roleplay within the setting of the game, some of them won’t be very happy about having you around.

I think a rp’ing group should PM the OP. Or get a website up and advertise a bit.

Do note that everyone has off days. Even RP’ers. We can’t always ignore irl (catch a cold, can’t pay bills this week, need to school/job, etc). There is more stresses than just game trolls and the people you’ve been around might be distracted.

But sometimes we are forced to ignore others because they tend to stroll into the area we are RP’ing and start yellin profanity’s and generally being hostile towards us for no reason other then we are rping and they think it’s stupid. The ‘megaserver’ (for lack of a better word that i know) made finding a group of RP’ers difficult and even becomes a pain in the kitten when trying to RP since we have to hop partys and taxi people and you bet your kitten if anyone DC’s they will need another taxi most the time x.×. GW2 does little to nothign at all to really support roleplaying at all:

GW2 lacks massively the Emotes/Animations to support proper roleplaying
GW2 lacks all kinds of tools for roleplaying, liek the proper ability to sit in/on chairs or to open up private chats that are password locked, so that multiple people can conversate with each other in a kind of multi people whisper chat, that only they can see and read to not disturb other non rp-ing peole around them.

GW2 provides in regard of roleplayign no option, that lets you clearly become visible for others, that you are a roleplayer.
GW2 provides no clear roleplay servers with strict and clear RP Server Rules in regard of naming characters and other rp relevent moderation that is absolutely needed to warrant thaton such a server runs everything smooth – free of grieving and trolling
—-

GW2 would have alot more roleplayers, if there would exist clear RP Servers with their own strict and clear RP Rules that ensure, that no trolls find the way in there with junk names like X Blah Blah X and the like and other ridiculous reta peep names, especially if the game would provide also alot more features and ontent, thats based around roleplaying, like especially alot more emotes, better animations and features like Housing/Gardening, Fishing and the like…

Illconceived Was Na.9781

  1. RPers are people and therefore exhibit human behavior: some are welcoming, some are cliquish, and some are genuine [word redacted]. Just as there are pick-up dungeon groups that welcome all comers and PUGs that kick anyone who doesn’t meet their concept of the meta, there are RPers that welcome newbies or strangers and those that… tell everyone to go away.
  2. There are tons of RPers around (part 1). Visit the unofficial RP site, http://www.guildwars2roleplayers.com/ or Tarnished Coast’s unofficial non-WvW site, http://forthetoast.com.
  3. There are tons of RPers around (part 2), just visit some of the usual hang-outs, including taverns (see the wiki’s article on taverns ) and various “hot spots” in the open world.
  4. There are tons of RPers around (part 3), and they are often spotted outside living story instance nodes (i.e. where you trigger a story or where there are open world NPCs).

While it’s true that megaservers have had an impact on RP, the effect on RP generally has been (in my opinion) grossly exaggerated. On the downside, it’s harder to find RP pick-up groups. On the upside, it’s less common to find RP pick-up groups fighting with each other about the “house rules” governing the “scenes”.

tl;dr before megaservers, you had to go looking for RP that suited your needs; since megaservers, you also have to put in a similar effort.

Personally, this hasn’t been my experience.
I started RPing a couple weeks ago.
I walked my character into a bar. There was an RP guild event going on, and the people participating in the event ignored me—not out of unfriendliness, but simply because they were absorbed in their own conversations.

Then I noticed a character sitting by itself. I walked up to the character, grabbed a beer, and struck up a conversation. The player was very open to do RP with me, and by the time we were finished I had met and connected with a few additional RP characters.

The impression I get is that, there are times when RPers are carrying out a storyline, where it would be illogical to include a random stranger who walks up. That said, I am new to RP, so maybe I just haven’t met cliquey people.

Possible solutions:
1. There are RP hotspots in every major city. For instance, the Serrated Blade tavern in the Black Citadel, or the various taverns and bars throughout Divinity’s Reach. Generally, you can start RP with at least one of the customers.
2. Contact an RP guild in-game or via their website. Many guilds have services for hire—mercenaries, assassins, heroes, ect. Many more are open to including non-guild-members in various events. And then, of course, many are recruiting new members.
3. Set up an account on the Guild Wars 2 roleplayers website. A lot of people use it to create character profiles and seek out others.

I think it’s a myth that RP is dying or that it’s rare in this game. I see RPers all the time, both in cities and running around the world.

And you know what? No problems whatsoever so far. Of course they do have their long-established storylines and interactions that I still don’t know much about and don’t really fit into, but that’s inevitable. I’ve never done RP and likely never will, though it looks extremely interesting. My problem is I want that immersive quality, but I dislike making a story and talking in third person. I’m anti-social enough without not knowing the rules for RP etiquette.
What I’d really love is a guild where I actually feel a part of it. A guild where I feel I’m not just manipulating rules set in programming to make high numbers on a screen.

When I first heard of RP, I thought maybe that was the answer. Heck, until I was 12 or so the best thing in the world was running around the neighborhood with my best friend pretending to be in other worlds. But it’s not the same. I love making stories and my life goal is to someday be a writer, but writing a story is not the same as living a story.

My favorite time playing MMOs was definitely when I first started. I was living my own life in a new world, and I loved it. I met the most amazing group of friends I ever had, shared our joys and struggles in and out of the game, and formed memories I’ll forever treasure. It’s ridiculous. All I did was stare at a screen. But the people I communicated with where real and that’s what mattered.

Sorry for all the rambling. Guess I just saw this RP thread as a way to get something off my chest. TL:DR version-I once experienced actually living in a game with the best of friends. I’ve been trying unsuccessfully to get that back and once thought RP might be the answer. I respect people who RP, but it seems too much about writing a story instead of living it.

Guess my post isn’t very topical… Oh well. Not gonna erase all this work after typing it up on a tiny IPod screen. Good luck to all you guys seeking a fun GW2 RP experience.

I can’t speak for the majority of RPers, but I’m always out and about incorporating roleplay into whatever I do, be it exploring, dungeons, etc. There’s also a pretty size-able community based on RPing in the game over at Guild Wars 2 Roleplayers. Lots of public events are always scheduled, and there are tons of RP requests and RP guild recruitments there. Check it out if you’re ever wanting to try it out.

  • Almost every time I’ve ran into roleplayers, I’ve seen people trying to disrupt them.

Very active roleplayer here (EU) – and indeed, this is a big problem for us. I’m a Rata Sum RPer – i love asuran RP the most, and that’s likely where i’ll always stay.
First off… the amount of trolls we get is sadly large – much, much larger than the amount of new RPers we see coming in. Somehow… there seem to be many, many people who hate our roleplaying. So whenever we see someone standing around the bar (Plikters bar at the bottom level of Rata Sum, our main RP hotspot), we usually don’t interact with them, leaving them to take the first step. Once they do, we’ll know they’re roleplayers with good intentions, and we’d gladly interact with you. We always do our very best to welcome new RPers to the community, especially because our numbers are sadly waning.

There are still a fair amount of RPers around, but as stated above.. there’s not always as many people – RP has its ups and downs, and without those few of us maintaining a conscious effort to keep the RP organised and going, to set up events and such, our Rata Sum would fade away maybe to never return. The game isnt too friendly to RPers compared to many others, and we have pretty few places where we can find new friendly faces to come roleplay with us, especially because if we publicly advertise, we’re likely to recieve large amounts of hate. On top of that, game mechanics are troublesome – we have very few emotes compared to Guild Wars 1, and have long been wanting new emotes. Any on-going emotes, like /sit for example, also need to be carried out again for people who newly arrive to be able to see them half the time.
In short, life as an RP-er isnt always easy.

That being said, we gratefully welcome any new, friendly additions to our community, and if you feel like RPing in Rata Sum along with us and are on the EU server, i’d gladly extend a guild invite to our hub guild. Just PM me in-game if you should be interested – there’s a big crowd of friendly people in there, and while many may be a bit kitteno invite you over, you’re always welcome to ask whether you can join in, and we’ll always be happy to see you at the bar.

The impression I get is that, there are times when RPers are carrying out a storyline, where it would be illogical to include a random stranger who walks up.

Considering how rarely a random stranger walking up to you in most places can be assumed to be roleplaying I’m surprised they don’t always ignore you until you make it clear that you are. Otherwise they’d be interrupting themselves all the time for no reason at all.

You must be new to RPing, the community on the internet has always been this way. Surprised they don’t have some ‘anon’ site for GW2 roleplayers where they bash and harass anyone they don’t like ‘for the lols’ because every other roleplay group online sure does with journal rpers being the WORST in that regard. It just seems to be the nature of the beast these days and I can honestly say that I’ve met some of the most immature, vindictive, and just plain nasty people online in RPer cliques. Sad because I love writing and creating and roleplaying heavily relies on both.

In GW2 specifically – I have met very few open rpers who don’t care if you can’t spout out three paragraphs or fill out a lengthy application that rivals a real world one for a job or pass a ‘roleplay inspection’. Usually when I meet them, they’re only interested in ERP which.. no… no sorry. I’m also paranoid enough about not playing my chars well enough in game mechanics, I don’t think I could take the pressure of worrying about not rping well enough on top of that.

Honestly, this is what bugs me about some RPers.

“I’m my GW1 character, I’m a vampire…”

I mean, I guess it could be done, but… meeeeeh. I haven’t seen someone do it in a convincing non-cringe way. Also, it’s hard to chat in combat.

I’ve never found a comfortable medium of dialogue time and actual play. Most folks are either extremely dialogue heavy to the point no actual play gets done.

If play is involved, it get’s cut short or someone carries the dialogue on for far too long where it loses value in a ‘realistic’ setting.

I use the term loosely of course, but I mean, realistically you don’t stop in Orr for like an hour plus in the middle of no where dialoguing.

For a time, certainly, in between foes or a moment of quiet. For a specific reason to advance a plot? An interesting discovery or quip? Absolutely.

At places of rest or camps, sure, we stay for a while. Prepare. Gear up. Banter, boast, open up, convince that stubborn charr to open up. Good times.

But, yeah. Ignoring a live event to continue dialogue?

“The heroes chat about events or some thing of interest while an actual event happens within their vicinity!”

That kills immersion. I’ve had a few bad experiences with that kind of thing. I’m sure better ones exist out there, I’ve just never bothered reaching out.

If I’m particular about things and they’re particular about things, we’ll likely clash and have issues and I don’t need drama. Not that kind, anyway.

Because random strangers tend to make the RP people nervous. Some of the commentary on the boards, about RP, give reason why. It’s not personal . . . but protection from trolls.

I normally dont have problems with RP-ers, until last week when 10 of them from a certain rp guild upscaled an event i was doing and contributed nothing. They kept walking around there (Calledon forest, Scrit area with the ruins) for 30 minutes. Had to collect 100 datacrystals to get the event done and kill zilions of skritt.

Wow, I have been playing just a few months but my impression has been vastly different from others have posted in here.
This is the MMO Ive seen with the most lively RP community so far. I’ve found many RP guilds already, and most of them have been really nice to me. Also there is another RP website about GW2 that is actually active and it’s really easy to find guilds for me.
it’s true that I haven’t found random people Rping that much, but I guess it can be expected with such a big world and many different servers.
I’ve played Neverwinter, Tera , DCUO and many others and the RP community in all of those is almost non existant. This game, alongside with Champions online and WoW are the only ones with a decent RP community.

Oh wow. It must have been a nightmare for you, being forced to finish that event, and all that extra loot you would have had to carry too! My word!

Seriously though, this thread is about someone trying to get into the RP community. It’s not about why RPers are such terrible people to you, so I don’t understand why you had to post this other than to seize an opportunity to have a go at a style of fun you don’t understand.

Wow, I have been playing just a few months but my impression has been vastly different from others have posted in here.

That was my experience too, before i started RPing. I just followed a small group of players around and listened to their Story and adventure for few weeks before i was asked to join by one of their small time companions. Most RPrs call it lamping(when you watch and dont say anything) And they really dont mind, i did say most.

The blackcitadel is usually a bed of Charr rprs, alot of them. My warband cant go into the Citadel at the moment because of something that happened in our story, but when we can again expect to see at least 10, and as many as 48 players come marching through, and they are always looking for more Charr players!

The pvp community reminds me of what Obi-kittenenobi describes Mos Eisley as from star wars.

Actually, their post brings up a good point as to another reason why RPers can be hard to find sometimes.

With events all over the place outside of the main cities, it’s hard to find good RP gathering points that don’t cause problems for others. Many of us do try to be considerate of people actively playing, and want to avoid doing things like leveling up events that we’re not helping to clear.

It makes finding good RP spots hard, and when we do find them they tend to be out of view of most players. It’s part of why there’s so many RPers in the cities and not out in the world at large.
