Why is there an expansion being made?
No, a lot of people have misinterpreted that. Anet stated that there would be no expansions in YEAR ONE of Guild Wars 2 and that there would be expansions later down the road and new ones released on a predictable schedule.
They have never said that there would be no expansions at all. The only things they’ve said is that they wouldn’t be doing GW1 styled standalone expansions and that they are not currently focusing on an expansion which basically means they may be working on one, but the majority of their team isn’t.
There was a misconception reported a while ago that they wouldn’t be doing expansions at all, but that was due to a reporting error where they didn’t understand what they meant.
Anet never said there would be no expansions. In fact, pre-release they said there would be. They’re simply not actively working on an expansion at this time.
Might want to read this.

And from what I recall, they never said they would never release expansions. They just stated that expansions are not on their list of things to do at the moment. It is something they are looking towards in the future maybe, but currently they are trying to strengthen the base game right now.

If Anet makes an expansion or not is more up to NCsoft than Anet i think, if they decide Anet makes an expansion Anet has to make an expansion. So i wouldnt really hold it against Anet…(also Anet didnt say there will be no Xpacks. They said they have no current plans for one as they want to improve upon their base game for now)
I’m not sure what’s going on behind the scenes, but a new personal story that makes improvements on GW2’s sounds good to me. Already they have the Living World guys keeping the world moving beyond the scope of killing dragons.
Wonder if I should start stocking up on gems…
But then, I’m willing to fork out for a good story. Wasn’t until the second ‘expansion’ that the GW1 storylines started to impress me. The Zhaitan campaign I’ll consider a learning curve if the next one is more enthralling.
Anet say many things and 90% of the time are lies.
So, who cares? If they are working on an expansion, let them. If not, what’s the problem?

Expansions are going to be a sensitively crafted thing. Mainly because an expansion would have very limited content added towrads wvw if they have to consider the viability for non-expansions players to continue to play. Making expansion only wvw content will only split the population up so I wonder how it’s going to happen. Also, if they increase the level limit (which is the last straw for me, probably my game breaking thing) then they have to consider how this is implemented in regards to wvw as well. I wonder how these issues will be solved hmm.
Anet didn’t “clearly state” that there would be NO expansions. They said that one was not being planned “YET”. They want to focus on the “living story”, for now, and work on an expansion in the FUTURE. I would imagine sometime next year, but, who knows. Could be later than THAT.

They could add a large WvW update at the same time as an expansion, but for free, like they have been doing. That way, all areas “could” feel like they’re being added upon, and everyone’s happy.
From the get go a.net was pretty clear on expansions being part of the deal. If anything, they’re delaying the inevitable expansion.
I don’t care either way. Guild Wars is the one game I’d find 60 euros for if they’d release content tomorrow. Other games can wait.

I don’t see what the problem is really. Expansions are great and considering the amount of content we’re getting anyway, the expansion would have to be pretty big so worth whatever they charge for it. And who’s to say it will be that expensive? You don’t have to buy an expansion pack for any game, nobody forces you to, but if you like that game then i’m sure you will be happy to pay for a whole load of new content. I know most people would be.
Expansions are released for so many games, even console games where you don’t pay a monthly fee. Take the elder scrolls games, Skyrim and Oblivion have had loads of expansions over the years and they’re the same financial concept as GW2 in that you buy the game and then it’s free to play after that. And anyway, everyone has said it but I might as well make it incredibly clear – NCsoft (company who owns ANet) never said there would never be an expansion. This is not a bad thing, just a mindless complaint because somebody assumed they meant one thing when in fact it was something completely different.
Frankly, I’m most baffled at Anet’s insistence that living story and other additions to the game have amounted to more than expansion’s worth of game content. I’ll just say, if I was presented with that kind of content and 54.99$ pricetag to pay for it, I wouldn’t even consider it until it dropped to 10$. Facts are different from marketing propaganda, and actual expansion with actual content is inevitable. When it’s developed and released is purely a business decision, but for average player’s understanding it’s sooner than later.
I’m pretty sure they said before launch that they expected expansions to be a major source of the games revenue similar to GW1.
They have stated that they aren’t currently focusing on an expansion, but since this is a B2P game, the gem store and expansions is where all their money comes from. You can bet that there will be a lot of expansions over the games lifetime.
Its being worked on because things take time to make good products you do not wait till the last min to make something as big as an expansion for GW2. Now you do wait for the last min to make the things other games call expansion and some times sequel to thoughts games. But that what makes GW2 so great the makers are willing to take the time needed to put out good content the players well they want it now with out any flaw and this just dose not happen in the gaming world speed or quality your chose.

Expansions are good.
Paying $40 for new content is way better than paying $40 for insert gem store items…
how about providing the expansion in the gem store to be purchasable with gems? price of gems goes up 40%

No, a lot of people have misinterpreted that. Anet stated that there would be no expansions in YEAR ONE of Guild Wars 2 and that there would be expansions later down the road and new ones released on a predictable schedule.
Then it seems that I’ve misunderstood almost everything that they said about this during the development of the game. Could someone please link me an article where they clearly state that there would be no expansions only on year one, and maybe, possibly, in the future, only?
Yes I do agree that paying $ for content is better than paying $ for minipets, costumes, etc. however this is the only way of income for ArenaNet through the game, besides selling new copies. I personally have not bought anything from the gemstore yet, but I am considering it as a form of showing support.
And from the news reported by Massively, I’m glad that it’s not a 100% certainty that there are going to be expansions, but more of a “wait and see” thing. I’m more keen towards Living Story than expansions.
Then again, I believe that the only situation in which I would not complain about an expansion would be if they released the other continents, Cantha and Elona, onto Guild Wars 2. I wouldn’t mind if they charged me full game price at all, it would be worth every cent.
Most of people love new content. Expansion worth of content should be charged by money. But what I expect is, new cities, new areas, new class, new race, new legendaries, new pvp modes, new wvw map etc…
Think about it like supporting anet and in same time getting something back, and lets be honest content of gw2 is by far bigger then other pathetic mmos that are getting out lately.

This is what worries me. They stated and stood by the expansions worth of content in the last couple patches. That should scare anyone when it comes to a expansion ill have to pay for.

I’d gladly buy any expansion just like in GW1 over any of this temporary content bullkitten
I will buy the XP as soon as they release it, more of the same quality cannot be a bad things, besides if they add stuff the core gameplay could change as well without needing to buy the xp for those inclined in avoiding it!
I suppose a new race, some skills and new areas will be added, maybe 2 extra character slots as well just like what happened in GW1!

Is there proof to what he says? I’m not saying hes lying, but wondering where they get the info that all money goes to NCsoft first, and then trickles down to Arenanet, or if it is a percentage etc.

I’m sorry my dear ANet, but why is this expansion pack for Guild Wars 2 even being made in the first place? I am 100% sure that it has been clearly stated by the own devs. that Guild Wars 2 would receive no expansion packs whatsoever – additional content would be released, continuously, for free, after the game had been bought. What happened in the past 8 months that made you completely change your policy towards the game?
I know hows the system for GW2 works: we buy the game, we buy gems, we buy cash items, ArenaNet receives money, pays its employees to develop new content for the game and for the cash shop, we get happy and invite friends to play and the cycle repeats. Yet I do not know where would the expansion pack fit there: oh hey, you have to buy the game, but don’t forget about the expansion packs! Expansions are great, because they always bring a lot of new content to a game, however they also mean that we’ll have to buy them, and for the new player the game becomes even more inaccessible, if we assume that the game price is directly related to the amount of new players to the game.
Yes, I am slightly mad about an expansion pack being made, especially because I will have to buy it because I really love this game, but I am more curious as to what happened to ANet’s policy over the past 8 months. Yes, I would most likely pay for the expansion pack right away, even pre-order a physical copy of it. I would still be disappointed with ANet, and this is coming from someone who played GW1 for 5 years (I still play) and has been an ANet fanboy for quite a while.
tl;dr – why are expansions being made when it was clearly stated that gw2 would see no x-packs? why will we have to pay for the content when the agreement was that we wouldn’t have to pay for content in the future, after the game release?
Meh, just don’t buy it. I never bought an exansion for GW1, do not plan to do so for GW2.
Lets not make this another Dontain thread. There’s enough opinion posing as fact going around.
