Guilds have no point other than be there for buffs and other small things

Seriously, just do a search for like 30sec and you’ll find the answer. The Guild Wars has nothing to do with Guild vs Guild at all….so, just stop already, please. The Guild Wars is most notably about the 3rd Guild War, which spread into the streets of Orr (when it was still a major thing). This war was interrupted by the Charr invasions, using The Searing -mystical cauldron that shot giant burning crystals down to areas of their choosing (given to them by false gods known as Titans, who were really minions of Abaddon)- at which point a nutjob by the name of Vizier Khilbron decided to read a forbidden scroll and sink Orr. That ended the Charr invasion which ended the 3rd Guild War.

There’s a [fake] history lesson for you. Enjoy.

So, if In the lore there was GUILDSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS FIGHTING (IN WAR WITH) other GUILDSSSSSSSS, why is there no GvG in the game?

This game is probably the only game out there that has more than enough reasons to have GvG.
First: The game is called Guild Wars
Second: A major feature of the game is WvW, which is a large-scale PvP (pretty much the same as GvG)
Third: Guild Wars 1 already had GvG

The only reason that you are correct about is Guild Wars 1 having GvG, your other reasons have nothing to do with Guild vs Guild PvP. Again, Guild Wars is nothing more than a reference to a historical war. This game is set in the same world 250 years later, so it would make sense to call it Guild Wars 2 for the name recognition.

No no no no no.

The game was called Guild Wars because Guild vs Guild combat was a main attraction regarding the game. The Guild Wars had very little to do with the game except as a setup for the charr to invade and whatnot, but not enough influence to name the game after.

The name of the game was absolutely based on the intention of the content.

No, it’s not misleading. “World of Warcraft” doesn’t have a war in it, does it? In fact, the patch 5.4 that releases soon (if not already) has both factions working together against an angry Orc. Guild Wars 2 sticks to the franchise based on lore of the world being set up by The Guild Wars, which is referenced many times in-game.

Isn’t the game being called Guild Wars 2 a valid reason?
Some people might be interested on it for having GvG.

See my original post in the quote above. Nothing to do with GvG.

ArenaNet was piggy-backing off a successful franchise. All they did was slap the same name on it and added a two.

Except that they were using all the lore, species, races, background, and so on. The game is a sequel of events in the future after the Elder Dragons awoke and the world is broken from the events from the first game (and set up events prior to that).

This game is probably the only game out there that has more than enough reasons to have GvG.
First: The game is called Guild Wars
Second: A major feature of the game is WvW, which is a large-scale PvP (pretty much the same as GvG)
Third: Guild Wars 1 already had GvG

1st) See my original post quoted above.
2nd) World vs World is about cooperating with the guilds/members on your server against the total collaboration of all members of the opposite servers you’re matched up against. Not related to “GvG” in the least bit.
3rd) GW1 had GvG, yes. But it wasn’t something they wanted to copy-n’-paste into GW2, as said many times in development cycle. The developers mentioned that they wanted something different, on a larger grander scale…and that’s where WvW came to be.

The Guild Wars occurred years before the searing…they get mentioned as a plug to please the lore nuts who want explanations for why guilds fight other guilds.

The first game wasn’t about the Guild Wars either.

The second game wasn’t about the Guild Wars either.

The third game wasn’t about the Guild Wars either.

The expansion wasn’t about the Guild Wars either.

And look, the successor to the franchise has nothing to do with the Guild Wars either.

The name was derived from the game mode to explain said game mode, not vice versa. No one bases a game name off of a few off comments that a few NPCs say and only when solicited by players. You develop game elements then you make up bull$@&! to make it fit in the game…in ANets case they didn’t try very hard. Then you have a buncha folks who like to pretend lore determines the development process…eh yeah, that’s not how it works…

By such logic Star Wars would’ve been an acceptable substitute title for a Justin Bieber documentary…

ANet named the game for a mode it no longer supports…genius…

To be fair, the first game was formed around the destiny of the player post the Guildwars. The second had guilds dedicated to specific alliances (Luxon and Kurzick), the third had an organisation that could be considered a guild called the Sunspears, and an order, that again, can classify as a guild, called the Order of Whispers.

The forth is a precursor to this. And this is.. Well.. It’s more a run on the title Guildwars than anything else.

I ? Karkas.

The official wiki, for one, is updated largely by fans. Also, I’d like to see the part where it definitively says that the game is absolutely named after the background Guild Wars and that the Guild Wars in the background weren’t made up as justification to have a title that also touts one of the primary features of the game.

eisberg, you are definitely wrong apparently either you have played gw legacy and never followed the lore, played the game completely blindly, or have never played at all and just read the wiki content. Unfortunately, wiki didn’t say much as if people who wrote or rewrote its contents may not have detailed information about the legacy game. But as you can see from the wiki says, In present day, the Third Guild War is often referred to as the Guild War. Which means the war isn’t over as long as there are opposing factions which are still around even up until the release of EOTN.

Yer right, the first game had a place where Guilds could fight and so it was called “Guild Wars” and a history was built up around that to explain why they were fightin’ and how it all began.

The second game doesn’t have warring guilds anymore, they decided wvw was cooler – maybe it is, I dunno – but it happens in the same world as the first game, with all the same races, same lore, and a hugely developed background created over the course of the first 3+ games. What would they call that game, if not Guild Wars 2? “Return ta the setting of guild wars 1, but – ya know – without guild fights this time”? That’s a pretty long and clunky kitten title.

What we got was a re-envisioning of the game; this time as a real MMO with a different focus. But – and here’s where ya should be kicking yerself – they never made a secret of that. The game was in the news for 5 years or more, with plenty of info for anyone what just took a gander. The game’s been out for a year, so it isn’t like ya couldn’t have done a little research before buying it … if ya jumped in blind, that’s your own fault.

There’s still pvp; there’s still even squad based pvp. (I suppose you could run around by yourself, if ya really wanted to) Being in a guild makes most things in the game easier – just like in any mmo – but they’ve even got guild only content, missions and puzzles etc, in this one. (which I haven’t seen in every mmo)

Does the game have Guilds? (You can make a 1 person guild if you want) Check. Does the game have Wars? (well the whole story is about a war, so) Check. And the game has plenty of factions to go around.

I get the name is confusing if you don’t know any of the lore, but it’s all there to find if you look just a little.

Sadly when I was playing Quake there were no actual quakes in it, I was buffled. Battlefield 3 didn’t have any combat on an actual Battlefield, you know big combat encounter, there was no big war in it. In Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction, players were fighting Bhaal, not Diablo, what a misleading title indeed.

A game title is a game title. I’m positive most people who ever ask for GvG or even think that the game should have it in, are GW1 players. I’m not saying GW2 shouldn’t have GvG, that’s a completely different discussion, this is only about the name. Players don’t (or shouldn’t) judge a game by it’s name.

I get the name is confusing if you don’t know any of the lore, but it’s all there to find if you look just a little.

Just what is WvW if not guilds at war.

And if you wanna look at it that way, there’s that, too.

(Ya did read my whole response and know I was agreeing the title was okay, right?)

In addition to my trahearne quote, above, I believe there’s a book/scroll in malchor’s leap [click: read, read further, etc] that explains what “the guild wars” are.

Edit: found it: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Orrian_History_Scrolls

The Guild Wars happened even before the events of gw1. They have absolutely nothing to do with both games at all. The reason why this game is called guild wars is beyond me.

ArenaNet added GvG pvp looooong after Guild Wars 1 release

Lol what? It was here at release.

Also to add a bit on the conversation, I really doubt the game was named after an event in lore that happened prior to the main storyline and that is barely talked about in game. IIRC Guild Wars was still called Guild Wars when it was supposed to be a PvP only game (might be wrong on that one).

So many people don’t know their lore

That’s not really the point of all this.

The fact is that the name “Guild Wars” is very misleading when the game does not have any wars between guilds in it.

Misleading product names are borderline illegal in most countries.

See what I mean…..this guy doesn’t know his lore either lol.

The Guild Wars was the name of an event in GW history that actually happened…has nothing to do with in-game guilds being able to fight.

I know where the name comes from lol.

It doesn’t change the fact the name is misleading lol.

Lol.

Please explain what is misleading about the game name, it’s very clear to me having played since the beginning of the original Guild Wars.

And you are conveniently ignoring that the original Guild Wars did indeed have GvG?

Also, you need to consider buyers that have not played the original Guild Wars. What do you think they expect in a game titled “Guild Wars 2”?

That comparison does not make sense. There are in fact guilds in the game, so it’s not that wrong to expect a war between guilds.
In fact the lore for the game guild wars is just created to give name to the whole guild thing in gw1, so they could promote pvp and guild vs guild.

Essentially this.

It is misleading for anyone who hasn’t read the lore of GW1 or GW2 before buying the game.

Therefore, I demand that ANet adds proper guild wars in our Guild Wars 2 game to stop misleading customers.

And by proper guild wars I mean something like this:

By that token, you might as well force other MMO’s to change their name. Like EVE online, named after a space portal through which humanity travelled thousands of years before the player story starts [disclaimer: I haven’t played this game].

Whether you like it or not, release titles are chosen based on their potential to sell to a wide audience. That’s it, nothing more to it. If this game had been called “Grapes of fury”, with a picture of a dionysos look-a-like on the cover, you’d still have no case. Because there’s grapes in the game that you can harvest. And a boon called fury. And gods.

Titles can be as far-fetched as a gaming company likes, it makes little to no difference on your rights as a consumer.

That’s actually debatable, but yeah I’m not going to court over it even if we would never get guild wars

That’s pretty misleading to a person wanting to buy the game, don’t you think? Logic would say that there must be guild wars in a game called Guild Wars 2.

Half Life – You start with full health MISLEADING
Halo – Your character has no halo MISLEADING
Call of Duty – Everyone insults each other and behaves like a dork MISLEADING

GuildWars 2

Currently playing Heart of Thorns.

“Oh…. ok.”
