Just what is WvW if not guilds at war.

And if you wanna look at it that way, there’s that, too.

(Ya did read my whole response and know I was agreeing the title was okay, right?)

Yes, but, it’s not just ok, it’s spot on.

“Why doesn’t Hello Kitty Island Adventure have any hello kitty stuff? Or any island adventures?”

“Well you see, a 1000 years ago there was an Island and Hello Kitty had an adventure on it, fast forward 1000 years and now we’re in a dark futuristic sci-fi city with guns and gang wars…. stop being an idiot and look it up yourself god.”

“Oh…. ok.”

That would be AWESOME! A futuristic dystopia based on the foundation of Hello Kitty? I’d play the hell outa that game!

Titles can be as far-fetched as a gaming company likes, it makes little to no difference on your rights as a consumer.

That’s actually debatable, but yeah I’m not going to court over it even if we would never get guild wars

Ok. I wouldn’t have used the word “demand” in that case. The only way to enforce your demand that Anet implements a feature of this magnitude – which would most likely take a year to develop and consume all of Anets available resources in the process – is by way of a court order.

That said, I like the WvW example. It’s actually quite a nice way to describe the warring factions in WvW.

What would they call that game, if not Guild Wars 2? “Return ta the setting of guild wars 1, but – ya know – without guild fights this time”? That’s a pretty long and clunky kitten title.

Well, how about “Tyria Wars” or “Wars of Tyria”, maybe “Living Tyria” or “Legacy of Tyria”, “Dragons of Tyria”….just some names popping in my mind thinking about it for….10 seconds.

If lore is really so imperative those names would describe the game much better in my view.

Ah, but yes…its surely no PR strategy or something like that….what a crazy thought in our times.

This won’t end well…

OP,

No idea, mate. Guild Wars 2 has absolutely nothing in common with Guild Wars, except in theory the lore. But they’ve kind of butchered that, as well – anything that’s happened since the game launched is pretty much rubbish writing.

Reminds me of the Fonz jumping sharks on waterskis…’

But I digress. And I agree with some of you. This game should not have had the words “Guild Wars” in the title.

So many people don’t know their lore

That’s not really the point of all this.

The fact is that the name “Guild Wars” is very misleading when the game does not have any wars between guilds in it.

Misleading product names are borderline illegal in most countries.

Since Guild Wars is a major part of the history of Tyria, they named the game after those events, it is therefore is not misleading. Guild does not automatically equal to player guilds.

So…any halo game that doesn’t have a Halo in it needs to be renamed? And dark souls? All the souls I see are light colored…so, that should be renamed “Light Souls” or just “souls”. Oh and final fantasy should be renamed just “Fantasy” because its obviously not the “Final” one, they have like 30.

Your arguments are invalid, they can name it whatever they feel like.

In the lore the latest Guild War was fought between the Charr Legions (GUILDS) and the three kingdoms of Tyria (GUILDS).
So, if In the lore there was GUILDSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS FIGHTING (IN WAR WITH) other GUILDSSSSSSSS, why is there no GvG in the game?

You didn’t really read what people wrote, and showed you, did you?
Human guild versus human guilds fought among one another during the Guild Wars. That stopped once all of humanity realized that the charr were an actual threat to their civilization. Charr legions are not guilds, they are factions within charr society that took shape once the original leader of the charr dies, and his children fought one another to take his place.

“Guild Wars 2,” was only used as a marketing strategy to get players of the original game to buy this one. Guild Wars 2 was never going to be a successor of Guild Wars, as the two are vastly different. Even Guild Wars 2’s story makes no real connection to the first game, save for the fact that the enemy from the first, and last, Guild Wars expansion is one we sometimes see now. That being Primordus’ minions, with whom we haven’t even fought against.

GvG, the game type itself, wasn’t the driving factor of this game. It never was. Marketing was, which is why we have this game called Guild Wars 2. It’s a shame really, because a lot of this confusion would have been cleared had ArenaNet decided to name this MMO a different name, as I personally believe it should have been.

Not really. The story isn’t a continuation of the first as there isn’t much of anything connecting the two together. We do have the interactions with Primordus in Eye of the North, but we don’t ever see that in Guild Wars 2. At all save for a Meta event in Mount Maelstrom and one small section of Kessex and Brisban.
We do see it with the Elder Dragons in general, but that in it of itself isn’t a very strong connection to tie the two together. Dragons were never a threat in Guild Wars, it was the conflict that the human gods had with one another that was the story behind the first series of games.

Gameplay-wise… There is nothing in Guild Wars 2 that screams “This is Guild Wars!”
From the profession system to how combat works, nothing in Guild Wars 2 give players a sense that they are playing a Guild Wars tittle. Nothing.

The definitive answer as to why this game is called Guild Wars 2 is because the intent was to make a sequel to Guild Wars 1. That didn’t really happen, but the name stuck.

Why is the series called Guild Wars? I’ve not seen conclusive evidence to say for 100% certain. There is significant reason to believe the game name came from the Guild vs Guild combat system in the first game, and not the lore events of similar name. The game was primarily intended to be a pvp-focused mmorpg-esque game with GvG as its ubiquitous (all guilds had their current gvg rating & rank listed directly underneath the guild name in their guild info/roster panel) featured pvp format. Game balance was largely dictated by GvG and to a lesser extent Hero’s Ascent (another popular pvp format) needs, with occasional pve consideration before the widespread split of skills for pvp and pve. While on the other hand, the lore events of similar names are mentioned rarely and few details are ever given; they serve mostly as historical backdrop for the game’s pve world. Make your own conclusions.

Lulz, aside from the name ‘Tyria’ only one thing from your list is really considered GW1. And they even changed that one thing(LA).

EotN is, for lore purposes, considered a GW2 prequel. Even the devs would admit to that. EotN was meant to intro GW2 content, not build on GW1 lore. About the only thing it shares with GW1 is the combat mechanics. If anything, it marked the dividing line between old and new.

As the head GvG general and leader in my guild of a few years I couldn’t agree more.

Also, its pretty obvious this topic keeps coming up for players to use as an excuse to add GvG.

Example – “There is no guild vs guild in a game named Guild Wars 2, there must be or it is misleading. So logically GvG must be added!”

No one really gets this kitten over the semantics of a game’s name. There is an another motive.

By the way, there is a reason that GvG is not in the game.

  1. The pvp team is given very little programmer resources when it needs a lot more
  2. Main reason: the game is fundamentally different from its predecessor. combat doesn’t work the same way at all. there is no support to keep a team up in a fight, most character builds are self-sufficient and the best way to win would be to just split over the whole map and try to get into the enemy pit and kill the lord. There wouldn’t be much of the good fights we remember at flag stand.

The Guild Wars occurred years before the searing…they get mentioned as a plug to please the lore nuts who want explanations for why guilds fight other guilds.

The first game wasn’t about the Guild Wars either.

The second game wasn’t about the Guild Wars either.

The third game wasn’t about the Guild Wars either.

The expansion wasn’t about the Guild Wars either.

And look, the successor to the franchise has nothing to do with the Guild Wars either.

The name was derived from the game mode to explain said game mode, not vice versa. No one bases a game name off of a few off comments that a few NPCs say and only when solicited by players. You develop game elements then you make up bull$@&! to make it fit in the game…in ANets case they didn’t try very hard. Then you have a buncha folks who like to pretend lore determines the development process…eh yeah, that’s not how it works…

By such logic Star Wars would’ve been an acceptable substitute title for a Justin Bieber documentary…

ANet named the game for a mode it no longer supports…genius…

You are 100% correct.

People tend to forget how GW1 was before Nightfall and EotN made it so PvE slanted. It was originally a very competitive PvP(especially GvG) game. The changes brought about by new staff, specifically the heroes and skill additions/changes, made the game not only a farmers paradise, but a solo farmers paradise.

It basically stopped being hard.

Guild Wars 2 is not a sequel to the original Guild Wars but merely an alternative story setting.

Why is this game called Guild Wars 2?

I have told many people already, GvG is possible in two areas. However it is not a full option to do this..

A: Current popular method is done through WvW.

B: The other method the should be recommended is to use the sPvP side of the game. Why? Because sPvP instantly gives you full base 80, no up levels for those under 80. The 5v5 Meta can be different from a 10v10 meta. Plus in sPvP it goes cross server, and not just the other 2 you are playing in WvW.

So for present time there is a method to do an effective GvG, it called custom arena, and sPvP.

However I would like to see the factions return, and bring GvG and Guild Halls back with bringing back the Kurzic and Luxon factions.
