What is the reward when you have gained a level after level 80?

It seems that after the patch, leveling after level 80 is pointless and gets you no reward at all.

Right now it does give no reward. It’s because the game is in between the old skill point system and the new Mastery line system. Once the expansion starts, leveling past 80 will progress a Mastery line.

As for why people are still doing it when it’s currently pointless it’s because almost everything in the game gives XP so the only way to avoid it is to not play at all. And since most sources of XP at level 80 are repeatable you don’t need to save it up for when masteries are released (and often can’t, unlike in other games where you can avoid turning in a quest to save the XP for later in this game if you do an event and then log out before getting the reward you just lose it).

Does that mean that those who do not have the expansion would be stuck in the “pointless to level after 80” world?

Most likely.

Don’t really see why that is an issue though. What is the difference between getting XP that does nothing and not getting XP?

They could have awarded some spirit shards instead as a leveling reward.

So people without the expansion would get easier access to spirit shards? Or should people with the expansion get BOTH Mastery Progress and spirit shards?

I would have been fine with people with the expansion getting both while people without the expansion only get the spirit shards. After all, it is useless to have the mastery progress without the expansion anyway.

That is correct. If you don’t get the expansion you will not get the Mastery lines and their progression. You will continue to get spirit shards the exact same way that people who did buy the expansion get the shards.

And no, you shouldn’t get rewarded for not buying the expansion by getting extra spirit shards that people who put down money don’t get.

But why get anything at all? They could just as easily simply have made it so that you couldn’t get XP at all after lvl 80.

And it is not like spirit shards are all that hard to come by in the first place. You get 3 everyday for simply completing 3 dailies. You get quite a bit from killing champions and so on.

There will be non-expansion masteries as well I think, they may lock it behind the HoT purchase, but removing that would be the best of both worlds.

There are Masteries for the old world, but they still require HoT, since the Mastery System is a HoT-feature.

Then what would be the point of leveling past 80?

Because that’s the way the game was set up originally and because it will be useful after the expansion and because they aren’t going to rewrite that part of the game (and introduce an unknown number of bugs) just to please people who didn’t put money into their pockets.

In GW1 that’s one way of getting skill points. You need skill points to buy Skills (1 point) and Elite Skills (3 points). I guess this was a carry over from GW1. I think it’s nice you could still get something beyond 80, although I prefer that I could choose between a spirit shard or a battle manual (made up item for leveling up alternate characters of the same profession).

For changes that are for the mastery system? No. Any changes to that will be for the benefit of those who paid 50-100$€ for that content. There is no reason for them to make changes to the expansion to benefit those who did not buy it. Unless you can prove that leveling past 80 is an actual problem for those that didn’t buy the expansion, then you can’t ask for a change to it.

Just because a customer doesn’t buy the xpack doesn’t necessarily imply that he spends less than any customer who has the xpack.

If there is no point for non-xpack customers to level up after 80, then the incentive to play after level 80 is now much lower which means non-xpack customers would be more likely to quit after level 80 than to continue playing and possibly buy the xpack after then.

Maybe so. But removing the leveling is tampering with a fundamental way the system is set up and unless there is a compelling reason to remove it, which you have not shown, then there is no reason for ANet to do so as removing it is almost guaranteed to bring in all sorts of bugs.

Just because a customer doesn’t buy the xpack doesn’t necessarily imply that he spends less than the every customer that has the xpack.

If there is no point for non-xpack customers to level up after 80, then the incentive to play after level 80 is now much lower which means non-xpack customers would be more likely to quit after level 80 than buying the xpack after then.

Maybe so. But removing the leveling is tampering with a fundamental way the system is set up and unless there is a compelling reason to remove it, which you have not shown, then there is no reason for ANet to do so as removing it is almost guaranteed to bring in all sorts of bugs.

I am not asking for the leveling to be removed, I am saying they should at least award some spirit shards for leveling past 80 even for those without the xpack.

You are asking that those who don’t buy the expansion get extra spirit shards that are unobtainable to those that do buy? Why should ANet allow this? The spirit shards are money in the pocket. Why should ANet favor the non buyers ahead of the buyers in this?

You might then say, well, people will then leave. However if people are not buying the expansion then the odds are they will get tired of the vanilla game and leave anyway, so this is also not an argument in its favor.

That was not what I said. Those who have the xpack are free to get the same spirit shards as well as mastery points. The mastery points are useless for those without the xpack so those without the xpack would not receive mastery points and only receive the spirit shards.

They deliberately took the spirit shards out of leveling. They could have reworked it so that level 80s get spirit shards when they leveled but they didn’t. For whatever reason they took them out and made them only available as a drop. If they don’t want them as a level reward, they aren’t going to put them back in.

So again, if there are no rewards then what is the point of leveling past 80?

The very same thing you would get if you are playing a different game and you don’t buy the expansion. Nothing. If you don’t buy the expansion then you don’t get the rewards for leveling.

That is just dumb and disincentives players from playing the game after level 80.

How so? When the expansion starts I’m going to be highly incentivized to level. I’m going to be searching for as many events to do to get as much exp to progress my mastery lines as I can and I bet that will be true of everyone that has bought the expansion. Because I will be rewarded for leveling after 80. And that’s exactly true of any expansion in any game. If you buy the expansion then you get rewarded for leveling. If you don’t buy, then you do not get the rewards. Haven’t you played a MMO before to know how it works? They aren’t going to set it up so that if you don’t buy the expansion you get rewarded for not buying it.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

But why get anything at all? They could just as easily simply have made it so that you couldn’t get XP at all after lvl 80.

Then what would be the point of leveling past 80?

You were incentivised by spirit shards? Some people just seem to want “stuff” regardless of use or worth… You are not being disincentivised you are just not being given a spirit skitten leveling – you are being given 3 each day for dailies though.

One reason it might not work to give a Spirit Shard at level-up to both those that only have the Core game and those that acquire the expansion is that the amount of XP to level might be different, depending on the Mastery Line activated, and how far along said Mastery Line the expansion account has gone.

Each track level seems to take a different amount of XP, so those without the expansion would receive a Spirit Shard at 380K? of XP (filled the bar), and those with the expansion would receive a Spirit Shard at up to 8M? XP (filled the bar).

I’m sure something like that would cause concern to be brought up on the forums, and elsewhere. Thus, a different suggestion might be in order.

Good luck.

Good point.

I am open to other alternative post-80 leveling up rewards, it doesn’t have to be spirit shards.

In any game, when an expansion comes out there will be those that buy and those that don’t buy. The game moves on to a new set of maps, new professions, new character progressions and those that don’t buy are left behind. The focus of the Devs is on the expansion and the players that have paid for it. Those that chose to stay behind don’t get the rewards, the progressions. The Devs have neither the time or the incentive to cater to those who have not paid for the new work they have done.

The money you paid when first you bought the game keeps you in vanilla Tyria at the stage you are now. If you want to progress, then you’ll need to pay the Devs for the work they put into the expansion. You are perfectly free to remain in the vanilla Tyria and do vanilla Tyria stuff but the Dev’s attention, work, progression and rewards will go to those that have moved on.

Well, see that’s the problem. If those with, and those without, don’t use the same amount of XP to level-up, some players will be penalized (those with longer XP bars). I’m not sure what would be deemed fair by the playerbase in that case.

The ‘reward’ that was previously given is now attainable a few different ways, so it seems the Devs did take that into consideration. Some may feel the rate is not on par, but game-wide it may equal out…I’ve no idea.

I just don’t think a reward can be given on level-up, anymore, as some could achieve it 16? 32? times faster expending the same amount of effort.

I’m not trying to defend anyone, or negate your concerns; I just don’t see how using the XP bar will work. =/

And that would be the wrong approach for an online store business model.

Ultimately they need to continually keep all customers engaged, xpack or not. This means creating content that can be used by all their customers. Xpack sales will taper off years after release. The gem store, however, would continue to be their lifeline.

It’s worked for every game with expansions so far. And if they put out an expansion every year to year and a half (and they said they are going with the expansion model from now on) that money coming in will make the gem store money less important.

lol…. No way that they are going to ditch the gem store after the release of xpack and I very seriously doubt that they would get into the “release xpack every year” model instead. The gem store would be a much cheaper route to earn than releasing a xpack every year considering the revenue over cost ratio lol.

Ultimately, they do need to release an xpack every few years to revitalize the game. However the gem store is still their life line.
