Why no Cape?

Kitten, you beat me to it!
Too many clipping issues with capes in general
“ANet. They never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity to not mess up.”
Mod “Posts created to cause unrest with unfounded claims are not allowed” lmao
butt capes best capes
Basically everything cool you get on your characters in other MMOs ( at least the ones I play) you’re not allowed to have here because everyone is too uptight about such crap.
The obvious solution to the Charr issue is just to sell a cultural backpiece similar to the wedding outfit:
Human: Cape with guild emblem
Asura: Hologram guild emblem
Sylvari: Leaf cape with guild emblem
Norn: Fur with guild emblem
Charr: Armour shell with guild emblem
I have no idea why this hasn’t happened. Given how much demand there’s been it would make a LOT of money.

If they make it a back item that you can hide, bring ‘em on! =)
Just please no fixed cape on an awesome looking chest-piece (I’m looking at you SW:ToR!!!).
Some maps have capes. This is enough it seems.
It’s not like every armor piece in the game doesn’t already clip with charr anyway.
Even some of the matching armor sets found on here clip with itself, which is pretty sad. So what more harm would a cape do? And as Blair said. From how it looks Anet would have to use a collision model of a sort to attempt to fix clipping.
Other games such like skyrim even has a similar situation, only difference is the fan community is given tools to make mods that fix this problem.

Closest thing to a cape is right now Grenth’s hood. And cultural heavy T3 on norn. But yes, charr character’s clipping through capes is an issue preventing further development. Same thing with “chair sitting advanced mechanics” mentioned last week. Charr are ruining the game’s progress :<
Actually, let me modify my statement. Anet doesn’t want capes because they’d clip too much. Yes, tons of armor in the game already clips, but it seems that rather than say, “to heck with it” Anet is choosing to go the “minimal clipping” route instead. Hence no capes.
This is also likely part of the reason why we’re only getting new outfits instead of new armors; outfits can’t clip with other skins, at least (minus backpacks, hair, etc.). Though I also think Anet wants the higher profit from outfits as opposed to armor as well.
I would like to ask an honest question about capes. Hopefully, somebody here can answer it for me?
Why do people like capes?
I have always hated them. I can’t stand having to look at a flowing bit of fabric all of the time, while I’m playing a game.
Is it because, for instance, it’s a good place to put a guild emblem? Does it make you feel like a superhero? I really want to know. Because people seem to ask for capes a lot in this, and other games. What do people like about them so much?
I agree with the clipping issue. I’ve seen that happen in other games, and it’s probably part of the reason I dislike them.
Capes will just get caught in the escalator and strangle you. You don’t want to be strangled, do you?

So glad you asked this, Paintpixie. It’s something I’ve wondered about too. Personally, I’ve always disliked capes. Helms, too. In other games, I’ve always taken the option to hide capes and helms. If there is no option to hide, I generally forego the benefits/stats of having the cape or helm, because I simply don’t like capes or helms.
I’ll be interested to read answers to your question!

Yes. I need a cape. Some black dye. And a cowl, with pointy ears.

For the same reason they want bunny ears or devil horns. They’re a pure aesthetic cosmetic choice. Someone mentioned skyrim as an example of clipping issues, and its ironic because two of popular mods for that game are a couple of cloaks and capes mods.

I find this hard to believe. It just doesn’t seem like clipping is the real reason. And if it is, it’s a poor one. As you point out, clipping happens, and not just with armour. I’m used to seeing my character’s feet embedded in the ground or completely embedded in whatever surface I’m sitting on if that surface isn’t flat. Clipping is an evil we accept because, after all, it’s a game, not a perfect facsimile of life. You say they drew a line in the sand and declared “I will clip this far, but no further”? I don’t buy it.
It seems like clipping is just an excuse. Tell us the truth Anet. You hate capes because of childhood cape-related trauma, right? A dog ate your favourite cape.

Because history. And we had them in GW1. A lot of people want them because of that, me included.it’s so you can show off your guild emblem with out having to have armor/back item you don’t like. Also most fantasy material has knights and what not with capes.

Tradition. It allows people to show off their guild emblem easily and for many people they look nice. There may be something to do with the superhero cape ethos too.
Then again if a guild had a dodgy emblem, or one you thought was ugly, it was easy to untick the show cape box in the hero panel.
I varied between showing and not showing the cape depending on the character and how it altered appearance.
