Why no capes?
We had capes in DAoC and it looked great for It’s time and caused no real lag. We have much better CPU’S these days.
Not sure why not besides clipping which already happens, so what?
Probably because of clipping issues. They recently released Guild Banners, though, so maybe they’re inching up to capes.

Just because we already have some clipping issue it doesn’t mean we should add more.
The problem with capes is the Charr. They run on all four, which apparently created huge amount of clipping, and it didn’t look good (according to ArenaNet)
I think the only way to add capes to the game is to set a race limit on them, leaving the Charr out. I don’t know if Charr players would like this.
The back slot is likely meant to eventually allow cape items. I’m sure it’s around the bend.

Give Charr a small shoulder cape then, like Aion. Google it I’m to busy to link kitten

A better question would be is crapping on 80% of players worth keeping it fair for the 20% who chose a glorified man dog.
Sorry, I just really haven’t seen a good reason to not have capes in any game since DAoC. It’s a feature commonly overlooked that should of became standard.
RIP my fair Engi and Ranger, you will be missed.
capes are simply no longer in fashion in Tyria, get with the times

We have Guild Banner back pieces, which i’m hoping one day will lead to capes. Every epic MMO has capes, c’mon!
I am a big fan of capes, and I’m aware that they were omitted due to issues with Charr PCs. Charr are my favourite and I’m under the impression they’re working on it, and its on one of their lists.
If they made it work but excluded Charr from getting capes, I’m not one for tantrums but I would throw a hissy fit of epic proportions.
from what i think, to stop the clipping on the charr they would have to make the character body solid, but doing that would stop people running around town etc easily for being body blocked everywhere.
back banners/flags are the future!

It’s not “crapping on 80%”. If the problem is indeed massive clipping it reflects poorly on the entire game, not just people playing.
Oh, and Charr are feline, so it’s “glorified man cat”.
Because you got Guild Backpacks instead!

Or have the option to make the Charr walk on 2 feet when using a cape, this will require animation work but can be done.

Or, you know, give the people the option to disable the capes (on themselves and others)?
Like what posters said above: (And already confirmed) It’s because of the clipping issues. I hope they fix it soon though!

It only effects people who play Charr. I don’t see how this would reflect poorly on any of my characters as I don’t play dogcatthingmen.

We have butt-capes.
In all honesty, I would start playing Guild Wars 2 again if they added capes. That’s how much I loved them in Guild Wars 1. And honestly, I would rather they put the capes in the game with the clipping issues and fix it while we have the capes.

If a part of a game looks bad, the entire game looks bad. But if you make something available for only a part of your player base you’re alienating the other part. And you don’t want to do that.

I, as a charr player, wouldn’t mind. Capes are stupid I am not a superhero I am a warbeast.
Currently playing Heart of Thorns.
+1 for capes or Banners that actually go above the head, those we have now….tiny, just too tiny…
bring back guild bibs! them bibs in gw1 beta were the best! lol
I think the whole clipping with Charr excuse is bullkitten. You really think that ANet with over 200 people working on the game, the vast majority of which are industry veterans and now many months after release still can’t solve something like that?
It is probably just another effort to distance themselves from the thought of GW1. As much as I thought they were cool in GW1, looking back now I think they were very cheesy and gimmicky.
I guess it would help people in WvW figure out who’s guild just claimed SM with no fort buffs active, but whatever.

Yeah this is actually more reasonable than you seem to believe. If the game engine runs a certain way that capes and the physics I presume they come with to avoid clipping work well on upright characters, but the Charr and their models/animations are a major roadblock, that probably means the game engine is having a hard time reconciling the physics with that race for whatever reason. If it’s the all-fours stance/animations it’s probably because the physics engine wants the cape to hang down, but the charr is in the way and the engine’s attempt to get the cape to hang down through the charr is causing massive, ugly, clipping.
Trying to tweak something like that to work without breaking the physics engine can be a very time (and potentially money)-consuming process, especially since those 200 people presumably working on fixing stuff have literally hundreds of other things to work on besides that.
At least as far as I know it’s still on the table to be fixed and implemented. It’s better than if it was never a thing they intended to have, then years later they go “hey players, here’s this super awesome thing to make you look super awesome!” before later deciding to say “hey players, remember that super awesome thing that would make you look super awesome? We decided not to do that because it would be too inconvenient if PvPers could only identify what class you are based on the class-specific abilities, animations and effects you use instead of glancing at you from a safe distance across the PvP field.” Yes, this is a thing that happened in another game and if anyone can recognize what I’m talking about you get 10 internet cookies for your knowledge.
I understand why charr need the “shark fin” but everyone else who doesnt walk on all fours should have one of these..

Come on anet, unless you only care about charrs give us actual back banners… like the ones we can place on the ground not these shark fins, they are ugly as hell i haven’t seen anyone buy one yet because of this.
Simple fix, give every race but charr the actual good banner to start with then work on the charr separately, punishing all players with ugly items because of 1 race not getting a perfect back piece isn’t really fair, if you are willing to ignore engineers when you release new skins eg the SAB im sure you can ignore the charr for one update until then.

Sadly I can’t agree with this. Nothing is actually better than some massive flag attached to my back. Capes need to happen Anet!

I always wondered why characters in GW1 dressed like super heroes.
Now they don’t.
But we’ve still got way too much buttflappery all up in this place… WTB some pants, and some shirts.
JAH Bless – Equal Rights and Justice for all.
Justice And Honor – Tarnished Coast.
I like the Back Banners better. You can see them from different angles. So your enemy in WvW knows whose guild you represent. It kind of reminds me of asian war banners.
I would rather have the large back banner than the current shark fin although a cape would be even better.
the flag or cape or fin option would suit everyone

I wouldn’t mind as long as they added some unique Charr back piece skins. I’m thinking things like the giant spikes on the back of the Hunters from Halo, or maybe large duel banners on our backs like those jet fighters with two tail things that stick upwards (that I don’t know the name of).
As long as what we get instead is impressive looking too I wouldn’t mind.
I’d kill for getting capes back. The only race where there would be any difficulty would be charr and I’m sure they could have thought of a solution for it. Too bad though, they said something to the effect of “No, we will never bring capes back because of the charr”.
Back banners are ugly as hell and no one has time to look at that in the middle of a fight.
Capes clearly showed the guild emblem in all its glory and what’s more, the bronze/silver/gold trim that you had on them in GW1 could show the prowess of the particular guild.
Like someone above said though, ANET want to distance themselves as much as possible from GW1 and they reject absolutely everything about it, apart from the lore it seems, which conveniently they can also put behind them as happening 250+ years ago.

Who’s going to see it but the your team or PvE players? The enemy can’t move their camera to see you leaving their dead body.
Back banners may be ugly to some. But that doesn’t mean Anet won’t make new styles.
Also capes are for comic superheros.

Are you baiting me or was that a serious argument against capes?
i’d rather have Samurai style back pieces. i doubt much clipping would be there, with the exception of a few armor styles.
I think capes would make a nice addition to the game. I personally would like them long and flowing unlike the ones we saw in Guild Wars. I’m talking some dragging on the ground.
As far as not having them because of the Charr issue, well, I can wait until they get them right as we will have to wait for when Anet wants to work and implement them anyways.
Here in GW2 you have the cliping issue plus one other problem that is not mentioned here. Your back is where your bows, shields, and 2H weapons are displayed when you have them equipped but you are not in combat. Where would those display with a cape equipped? Under the cape? It would be occluded that way. Over the cape? The cape would have to be pressed against your back and the weapon would interfere with the cape.
They could do racial capes. That way the capes don’t have to look the same on all races and they could find a creative solution for the charrs (if that is a real issue) or even the asuras (the cape and guild emblem would be very tiny)…
i want cape with proper physics. not like the ones in gw1.
anet please make it happen

3 year-old thread.
With all the other capes threads that were started this very week and are still on the front page, you needed to raise this one from the dead?
Do we need more visual noise and prestige-less, gaudy back items?
