Why would I want to continue supporting this game?

ANet has done some good things, with their last big patch. I appreciate the skill respec anytime, the wardrobe. But I feel they also messed up (see Trait unlock debacle).

Further I don’t see any patches unless it deals with Living Story or Tool-tip changes.

There is probably a large portion of the player base waiting for:

  • More community involvement. Don’t ignore threads. Including reactions to player suggestions (A More Magnificent Mesmer Main Mechanic – I know this will never happen but show you care!)
  • Quality of Life enhancements (e.g. Saved Specs)
  • Bug fixes. Check any sub-forum!
  • Class and Traits overhaul (I’m sure Rangers are waiting for a bone)

When all we see is game updates and improvements to certain sectors the game play (gem-store & living story) don’t be surprised that is the only segment of the player-base that stays. I do appreciate the fact that the goal was to have zero expansions and have the gem-store carry the game. But I’m not sure this is working. As far as I’m aware the gem-store exists only to encourage developers to make outfits at this point in time. ANet doesn’t even care to have the gem-store better facility player use in making transactions! (hello filtering!).

ANet… we want to give you money. Help us!
Let us know that you still have a development team doing the things players want.
Tell us the goals you are working towards so we know we should buy your gem-store stuff. Or make some of your features purchasable from the store. Will this encourage updates?

What do others from the community think?

Cheers

To avoid confusion… I too love this game.
I just wish to see that things players have been harping on for years gets resolved.

I think those that find things interesting or useful in the Gem Store will purchase them. I think those that do not want to purchase items from the Gem Store will not.

I don’t think purchasing an item from the Gem Store says anything in particular about a player’s desires or satisfaction with any particular segment of the game.

Although, I would be more than pleased to read the ’What’s in store for the rest of 2014’ Blog, it would not impact my decision to purchase an item from the store in any way.

I’m not sure your post/thread will have much impact as blackmail never seems the best choice. I know when my children try it on me, it just makes me irritated.

I might buy a gem card again if I have a home server again or If I see the writing progress from abysmal to simply average.

Till then, not happening. I won’t buy an expansion either, under the current megamerge structure and disregard for writing quality. I do not want to see Elona and Cantha remade with shoddy fanfic.

Ley lines. The perfect solution to deadlines and writers block. Now in an easy open Can.

I love this game, I buy the odd gems when I can, because I love this game.

They’ve only recently re-vamped the hero panel. I’m sure saving specs is being worked on.

When you say “years”, the game is only reaching the 2 year mark. That’s still very early for the game. Not saving specs, though annoying, doesn’t ruin the game for me.

Some devs reply, most don’t, because it’s better they don’t. And that’s fine. I don’t need dev response to know that they are reading, and they do work on bugs. Just some are easier to fix than others.

Anyway all this has been said before.
I support when I can, because I really like this game. I like the LS, and how it’s progressing. I like the style. I have fun, and I’ve spent alot of time in this game. Idk how many console games I’d have to go through to spend the same amount of time.

  • More community involvement. Don’t ignore threads. Including reactions to player suggestions

There is so much activity on the forums — most of it inane, and continually recycled topics — that keeping an active presence here would be a full-time job in itself. I want these people to focus on the actual game, not patronizing every thread asking for flying mounts.

I’ve been playing since launch, with a break here and there, and have seen plenty of devs interacting on the forums in my time. Not sure if this has been in decline lately, but I still don’t really expect this level of interaction with most games. It’s nice when it happens, but random customers should not expect personal responses every time they make a post.

  • Quality of Life enhancements (e.g. Saved Specs)

Not exactly crucial, but I do agree, being able to save sets of gear/traits for different purposes would be really nice. I’d bet this will be integrated at some point.

  • Bug fixes. Check any sub-forum!

Uh… they release bug fixes all the time. Sure, there are some old ones whose continued presence remains puzzling, though.

  • Class and Traits overhaul (I’m sure Rangers are waiting for a bone)

Are you kidding me? There have been skill and trait changes all throughout the lifespan of this game, some of them pretty major. You even referenced the free trait reset patch in your original post!
Funny you mentioned Rangers, because they recently announced some very welcome changes to Ranger skills and traits (as well as Engineer). Check the forums for those professions, you should be able to find the info.

Edit: Oh, should have mentioned unlocking traits… I am with you on that one, I can’t defend that. It’s an abomination… :-(

I just started playing this game at the beginning of summer and already hate the trait system. I just turned level 45 and I could’ve had 7 traits already with the old system but instead I only have 3 traits. I’ll get a 4th one when I get to 46, but then I have to level up another 6 times to get the next one, whereas with the old system I would’ve only had to level up 5 times. And also the stupid unlock requirements. Considering putting this game away until they change it.

OP, you claim you don’t see any patches addressing issues that you claim are important. How much specific warning have we seen for any big patch. Did you know about the account wallet the month before it came? Did you know about the Fractals the month before they came.

There’s a difference between a company doing nothing and a company not announcing what they’re doing.

Some of the best updates to this game came completely unannounced. So to assume they’re working on nothing makes not sense to me.

Edit: We know from Ready Up there will be more balances coming, both the Ranger and Engineer were covered. More professions will be covered in coming episodes.

Would someone explain the problem with obtaining Traits now? My assessment is that one will become much more familiar with their profession in this manner.

The problem is three fold. It slows down leveling in your third, fourth, fifth character. It’s a huge gold sink if you already have world complete and don’t want to do it again. And a lot of the quests they ask you to do are either really hard to do without a group, or are pointing to bugged events that you can’t do even if you have a group because they don’t start. There are also some traits that require you to do higher level content than you could possibly get to at the level you’d normally be able to use that trait.

Add to this that you get less trait points as you’re leveling which makes a process that some find boring even more boring. You don’t even get your first one till level 30, and for that you’d get one minor trait. In the old system, by then you’d already have two minors and a major trait.

Because a lot of the traits are a pain in the kitten to get, either requiring something ridiculous for the level (like some adept traits requiring 100% Frostgorge Sound exploration)… or gold and skill points that a new player simply won’t have.

It’s basically everything that was stupid about GW1’s elite skill capping mechanic made worse.

  1. I’d rather the devs work on the game than talk on the forums.
  2. QoL enhancements take time; we got some in April, and no doubt more are coming.
  3. Every bug I’ve reported has been squished in short order. I can say this about no other game I’ve played.
  4. Since most balance patches make changes I have not liked, having long stretches between them is a good thing.

Yeah, this all sounds like you’ll be spending more time with your profession.
Even though I don’t have a post-Feature Pack character, I do have a few low-levels and I’m getting to know my Ranger in moments that I would have just slapped something together on my Necromancer and plowed through by the skin of my teeth.
