Okay, first off – i’m not just here to complain about the new hairstyles. I think there’s quite a few lovely hairstyles been added, and i like the fact that there -are- actually new hairstyles.

But… i can’t help but ask myself questions as to why they are as they are… i play pretty much exclusively asura, and… some of the hairstyles are just strange, and.. i couldn’t see myself wearing these in everyday goingsabout without looking.. almost silly. The one male hairstyle (“number 2”) points up as if it defies gravity, and one of them just looks plain weird (“Number 1”). The female pigtails also look so big and out there that i couldn’t imagine anyone really wearing those in normal life. I’ve heard that things are much worse for the charr, even (A tree? Really?).

And, besides expressing a bit of discontent (and only a bit, because i do really like some of the new hairstyles), this is more of a request.. i can’t help but ask… why does it all have to be fancy and big, or just weird, to the point of being silly? The new hairstyles look awesome, but i like my asura to.. look kinda normal, in a way. And… i find those kind of hairstyles a bit lacking – styles you might see someone wear in the real world. Especially on male asura, i’d like to see more hairstyles that are just.. well, hair. No fancy accessories, no excessive amounts of gel and such. And preferably without seeing his skull.

That being said, once again… i would like to express my appreciation for some of the other new hairstyles – the first one for females looks absolutely precious, and the second one and last two male ones look great too. They just… almost all look way too ‘out there’ for me.

different strokes for different folks I quite like the look of most of the hairstyles and my girlfriend was adamant that her next asura WILL have the pigtail hair.

I like that they’re adding new, more stylised hair (Some of my friends have always complained that the hairstyles are a bit bland in the game), but they’re also adding pretty standard hair too (for example, the pigtails on asura, pretty normal way for women to wear their hair).

You have to realise that most people want to use the kits to look a little more out there and special. for most people, standard hairstyles you see every day in the real world don;t do that, and ANet will always try to cater to the majority when it comes to demand for gem store features.

They’re nice as works of art, but the idea that many of them would survive hours of running around a WvW map (or the equivalent) is a little far fetched.

Maybe the Mohawk would, with enough buckets of industrial grade hair products?

But, the others, forget it.

They’re made for fashion runways, red carpets, posing in bars, or maybe walking around in wind-sheltered cities, in relatively clement weather and that is about it.

Personally, I’m like the OP – I prefer more relaxed hairstyles, for running around, that look like people’s hair when it just dries naturally.

Obviously, ideally, a fairly nice type of hair – not lank, or anything.

Some of these styles are also nice and I love the flipped over ones for human female, for example, but I think they should be in addition to more natural styles (of which there are relatively few, actually); not instead of.

Especially as a more natural, wavy, long look is very in for women, ATM (if you look through fashion magazines and/or on fashion sites/forums).

I’m still waiting for some Mohawk variations or side cuts for (female) Asura… Just some hairstyles that don’t look like wigs… Asura are not exactly known for their fancy girly hair and not everyone wants to design their character as that stereotype doll face…

Currently my normal Mohawk must suffice… But I saw some very nice suggestions in the archive:

Yeah, I know that’s possible – I was saying to my BF that you could, possibly, assume that some sort of magic is involved.

But, personally, I just find it more immersive if hair acts more like hair than an immovable object.

It’s not like most (any?) games have totally realistically moving hair yet, as it is, so it’s not like we have reached that point where it’s something you just take for granted.

When we reach/pass that point, maybe I will decide to abandon it and wear concrete hair instead, because I will be able to think of it as “magic” (as opposed to design capabilities still being limited); but, until then, I prefer to go with the more natural options.

Not only that, but as much as I like art installation hair, on others, I just tend to prefer natural, in general.

You’re less likely to get really tired of it, for start.

Actually, another thing I was just saying to my BF (yeah, he’s a patient guy), was that if the hair had the ability to move naturally and then the char’s animation also correlated with the chosen hairstyle, then it would work.

So say, for example, you had the flipped style, which then (inevitably) unflipped and streamed behind you, as you ran – but then, when you stopped, your char’s new animation was to flip it back over and pull it back to the side of her face.

Now, something like that would really add something to a game (and to a hairstyle option).

As opposed to the current situation, where however nice a hairstyle may be in theory, it has the potential to make the overall experience seem more awkward and less natural.

The only hairstyles I genuinely liked alot or felt were “ok” and anything in between, was everything, BUT was Asura Male 1, Charr Female 1-3(seriously Anet?) and Male 2-3. Charr Male 1 gets a free pass because it is at least believable(not reality), doesn’t look like a joke, and it reminds me of Red XIII

The thing that annoys me the most (main charr player so this ´will be about the charr haistyles only) is that some of them looks Slapped on to the face… like the big dread lion mane-ish for females. It doesnt look like as if its actually growing on u’r character. Same thing goes for some of the older ones too. There is room for massive improvement ther in general I think.

Secondly – The clipping! Charr ave horns and yes, they do point a little bit in all directions. But then be smart when doing hairstyles and take this in consideration. Yes, it will limit the options a bit but it will also make ppl like myself even thinking of spending my money. All todays hairstyles was just big no-no’s (especially on the female side). The male ones were better.
And some of the older ones don’t even fit on my characters neck as the new femake face create shirnkage of the neck making the hair hover above it (especially the “old” mohawk ones).

I think the female charr mushroom cloud hair would work on an asura.

Asura: Why? Why, because I have so many bright ideas the continual flashing of light bulbs over my head was giving innocent bystanders headaches. Which, by the way, has just inspired me to invent a new type of sunglasses! (hair lights up)

“Normal” perhaps, but not natural.

They (almost) all are updos and/or have hair accessories, or plaits/braids, or fringes/bangs (which you may, or may not like) etc..

For human female, for example, there’s really only the one wavy style that looks fairly natural, doesn’t look overstyled and has no fringe/bangs, or hair accessories etc. and Norn really has nothing like that, at all.

It may appear, to someone who only likes very dramatic styles, that there are plenty of natural styles, as you are probably just going through the available ones thinking “boring, boring, boring…”, or whatever.

But, take another look, with what I have said in mind and you will see what I mean.

I have nothing against dramatic styles, at all, but they should, obviously, be as well as, not instead of, natural styles.

Then we’re all happy.

You said “with all the other perverts”.

Meaning you think we’re perverts, too.

If you were just saying they were perverts, you would have said “with the perverts” (no “other”).

We’re NOT perverts.

I, for example, am a woman IRL who happens to have long, wavy hair.

It’s not perverted for me to prefer my characters to have that type of hair, too.

…and even if I were a man, with a female character, it would still not be perverted to prefer natural hair on her.

Liking naturally occurring things is about as far from perverted as you can get.

Why the weird new hairstyles?

The hairstyles are probably extravagant because IT’S A FANTASY VIDEO GAME. This whole “it’s not realistic” thing people always go on about drives me insane. If you want a realistic video game go play Second Life with all the other perverts.

“Perverts” for wanting more natural looking hair options, as well as other more elaborate styles?

Someone has a very strange idea of perversion…

I was referring to the game Second Life which has a lot of very perverted content and people. Since it’s basic purpose is to achieve just that, a second life, in which your fantasies can be “realized.”

You said “with all the other perverts”.

Meaning you think we’re perverts, too.

Doubt hes trying to say outright that realistic content is perverted.

Also, Arent these natural?

There’s a couple pages of just incredible/ridiculous stuff, yes, but there’s a good portion of just mundane hair too. It’s almost even, in fact.

Of course he is.

He’s rude, judgemental, uptight, probably perverted in some way himself (and projecting) and (more importantly) wrong.

I already made a post regarding those hairstyles.

No, most of them are not natural.

“Normal” yes; natural no.

The only one that I would describe as natural (ish) is the one I used before I swapped to the new updo, which is the far right one on the second row.

It’s long – not bobbed, or with bangs, not an updo, not with hair accessories, not obviously styled (straightened, blow-dried, tonged, whatever).

It has a few layers cut into it and it’s not as long as it could be, but it’s the most natural looking option there.

Seriously, have we really got to the stage where some people don’t know what long, natural textured, minimally trimmed/cut, unstyled, un-accessorised hair looks like?

Hair obviously doesn’t grow to suddenly end at chin length, to have bangs, or hair accessories attached to it, or to be very straight and then turn under at the ends, or whatever.

All that has to be done to it, artificially, so it’s not natural.

I was not trying to say realistic content is perverted, it was a misunderstanding that you’re now using as a tool against me because you disagree with me.

I’m just going to stop replying though since obviously common sense isn’t something you’re familiar with. Not mention the various assumptions you’ve made, all of which have been wrong.

I like how people just start to realise how badly charr are being kittened over by Arenanet. They were the ultimate bad guy race, powerful, war-like, ferocious. Now they are cute fluffy kitten with anime hair. Well done. Enjoy.

i play pretty much exclusively asura,

and… some of the hairstyles are just strange,

Well, yeah. Strange appearance pretty much defines Asuran aesthetics.

As a charr player and this game’s informal joke race, I just gave up any hope of seeing them come up with charr hair styles that don’t belong in a 1980’s hair metal band.

The charr armies are beset by several terrible foes, none of which more so than the occasional lack of hair spray.

The charr are soldiers, one whould expect “some” hair styles to reflect that somewhat.

?

All of these?

sigh No… those are the only ones that actually work well. They also happen to be the original styles. You missed the point.

What I would like to see are more spiky or messy hair styles for Human males and not just long, flowing, perfect combed L’Oreal hair.

I like the options the Sylvari have been getting lately, both male and female, because they all seem so unique. There’s never a dull moment there.
