Why this game feels unrewarding to me

hello there.

First, don’t get me wrong. I think GW2 was totally worth my money, i play it a lot and it is FUN, in general.

What is quite disappointing to some extent are the rewards. See, i like the Token-System in general, but this can not quite satisfy me. See, i was a GW1 player for about 6 years, right from the start. GW1 was all based on skins, since max level was 20 and max-stat gear was really easy to get. Once it was about getting the skins you wanted, it was both: luck AND checklist work. Now in GW2, it is ONLY checklist.
What i miss is the “random” rare stuff. In GW1, there were some chests in dungeons, zones or PvP that could contain something really awesome and rare if you are lucky. There was a wide variety of desired rare drops (for example some weapons you can only get from some certain dungeon chests, or miniatures you can get from some reward-bags or chests, not to mention the everlasting tonics..).

I miss the excitement before you open a chest, because mostly the chests are full of crap loot, and you may know in advance that there is nothing in those chest you really want to have (or want to sell).

Then, i have another problem. Mostly, the “work” you have to do to get to one of the chests is hard. If i tried a jumping puzzle and fail for 1hour, and then finally get to the chest, i don’t want to get 2 blue items and 1 green worthless mark of the soldier. Ok, i could live with this, if i would know that there can be something in those chests worth the effort, if you are lucky. Such as the chance that a minipet may drop, or a rare dye, or at least some crafting materials?

Ok now you may tell me that for all the random lucky loot, we have the mystic forge. Yes, and i like the mystic forge, but there many things are, again, checklist work. And the mystic forge is expensive. You need a lot of items, and then more items, or money to buy the items. Means you have to farm events, play the auction house, basically imitate the bots farming the event locations…

Now let me ask: What if…?

- What if the chests at the end of huge Event-Chains would have the chance to give you an Event-Related item as reward: The Tequatl chest could reward lucky players with a miniature Tequatl. The shadow Behemoth with a miniature shadow-behemoth… The temple events in Orr could give you everlasting tonics (for example an everlasting shade tonic from the grenth-temple). Just fluff and vanity stuff, nothing you need.

- what if the dungeon chests could reward you with one of those dungeon-weapon pieces? yellow ones in story mode, exotics in explorable? Yes, you would still get tokens, and yes, you may still use the tokens to buy the stuff you want, and yes, the items would still be account-bound (or soulbound), but at least you can be lucky, or just throw the weapons in the mystic forge.

- what every jumping puzzle chest could reward you with a certain silly Hat (town clothing), if you are lucky?
