Why were monthly achievements removed?
cause players would knock them out in a day and then have no reason to log in for the rest of the month.
instead they added login rewards, giving u the incentive to log in everyday for a reward.

Yes, 2 was probably the best (although I liked the flexibility of 1). The three biggest problems currently:
1) Gold is tied to it, so no matter what you do you feel like you ‘have’ to do them now to keep up with everyone else in the economy. Yes, there are other ways of getting gold but when you know everyone is for a few minutes work you can not afford to skip it.
2) Too many things are in the PVE track. Yes, you can do the others (and I do) but from what I have read people in other modes, especially wvw, are not thrilled with the situation.
3) Everything is random. Maybe it is just me but I liked finding out in advance on the wiki what was coming up so I could plan my evening.
4) Some tasks are trivial (vistas) and others not so much (tag 4 events in a particular zone before the big bad dies because everyone else is doing the same thing). Are dailies supposed to be easy or just plain annoying?
As the OP says, monthly rewards were transitioned into daily login rewards. Roughly speaking, the daily logins provide somewhat better rewards (plus the current dailies are more rewarding and take less time than the dailies that existed when we had monthly achievements).
In theory, OP, you’re right: they should have encouraged people to stretch themselves more. Instead, as Jaxom says, a lot of people would grind them out on the first few days. Plus, it appeared to only impact the routines of a small minority — folks who already dabbled in WvW or PvP spent a bit more time there, but lots of people just ignored it.

It’s all about statistics, and Anet’s ability to say “we have x number of unique ID’s logging in every day!”
Well it is disappointing that we don’t have monthly achievements anymore. I’m sure the current system is better all around, but I still don’t see exactly why we can’t have monthly achievements in the new system as well. There are plenty of scarce items that people have been requesting more access to. I don’t think it would be all that out there to bring back monthly achievements alongside the current dailies and have the rewards be stuff like Amalgamated Gemstones, more spirit shards, crafting materials. Really at the rate of getting these things once a month it wouldn’t be gamebreaking, but it would give players more access to some of these materials that can be very hard to come by.
I think the monthly achievements look more interesting than the dailies we have now, at least the PvE dailies. It would be just like the dailies now, if you want to put in the effort then good for you, you get a reward. If not then you don’t really lose out on all that much as the rewards are available through other means still. Don’t get me wrong, I love the login rewards, but at the same time I want more medium term goals in this game, and monthly achievements could be perfect for that.
