Will Elite specs replace old ones? (Meta)
“I’m not looking for an answer like, “No, you should play what you like to play, there is no best spec.””
So you basically only want an answer that say: Yes they will replace the old ones?

You need to define Viability. Otherwise, my answer is going to be an equally vague, “In some situations, yes. In others, no.”
Mesmer, Necromancer, and Warrior run their elite spec in PvE almost without question. Engineer and Ranger are big sidegrades into things other than DPS, so whether or not you use this is unclear. Thief and Elementalist have elite specs that may be marginally better than their base specs and you may want to use situationally. Guardian elite spec is for roleplayers and doesn’t have a place in PvE.

He wants to know whether or not the new specs will have an impact on (read: replace) the old meta builds, without having the thread cluttered with a discussion about meta itself.
Imho this will depend on the game mode, since for example the druid will be a strong contender in pvp situations (especially in the WvW melee train) while i doubt that the class will have an impact in the old zerker dungeons.
Scrapper however is a strict upgrade imho and will replace the old engi.
For daredevil it is impossible to tell since anet wants to implement significant changes up to release.

No, they’re looking for real discussion on the objective strength/perfomance of builds.
Not some asinine “but GeeDubToo can be played with any build! That means nothing is better than anything else, ever.” response.

I think some might(like necro) but others (like thief) won’t be touched really, meta wise
In PvE, chronomancer, herald, and reaper will be meta. Berserker will be good for condition damage builds ( condition damage warrior isn’t meta ) and maybe for direct damage builds ( IDK for direct damage builds ). Druid is good for healing if raids need a healer/make it a lot easier to have a healer. (s)crapper MIGHT be used in raids if a ton of CCs are needed. Tempest is mediocre especially compared to what other traitlines/weapons ele have. Daredevil can be useful for difficult solos because of the extra endurance but won’t really be used in group PvE play. And last and most certainly least, dragonhunter is useful for being useless.

1. Join olololometazerk gearcheck fractal lvl 50 run.
2. Use Tempest’s warhorn
3. Watch Lion’s Arch loading screen.
Chronomancer appears to be by far the most exciting e-spec for existing classes. Some of the wells are incredible and the alacrity mechanic speaks for itself.
Revenant appears to be designed around herald, so I doubt you’ll see a herald-less revenant any time soon.
Other than that I don’t see any of the specs taking over existing meta, but it’s too soon to know – we’ll have to see what the new fractals/ rest of the raid look like.

I pretty much agree with this, except I think Druid could have a place in WvW/PvP meta. I haven’t tried Tempest myself, but I have seen that it can heal for tons, and a few people I know that play d/d ele in WvW are excited for it. I did try to create a hybrid power/sinister Berserker (with a focus on burning), and was impressed with the numbers I saw (in PvE).
As for being “replaced,” I can only see Chronomancer definitely leaving Mesmer in the dust. Mesmer is a utility class- the insta-recharge F5 is really good, especially in fights where a double-feedback is super helpful. Heck, just a double time warp is awesome, and both are even better! Alacrity and the wells are also pretty great.
Otherwise, I don’t see why our current builds wouldn’t still be viable in our current content post-HoT. We have to see what’s in store for us in raids and fractals, as well as the rest of the jungle maps. Surely a meta for raids will develop separately from other PvE- and our current meta of DO ALL THE DAMAGE ONLY might not work 100% of the time there and probably will suffer without the new elite specs.

Thank you for your helpful responses guys =). I have an Ele and a Thief and I don’t really like the way Daredevil is looking and I was hoping I wouldn’t be pigeonholed into playing that specific playstyle once it’s available (if it outshines the other specs).

I was talking strictly about the PvE meta not PvP since I am more familiar with PvE. Reaper is way better than the current necro because of more DPS/chills ( tho reaper still isn’t useful for 5 man content ). Herald because of the AoE boon duration/might/fury/swiftness/protection/150 ferocity. I don’t think a condition damage tempest is gonna be useful for PvE. And yeah the raid meta will definitely be separate from dungeons/fractals.

I’m simply curious if most of the new elite specs for classes will replace the old ones? Will you technically suffer in viability (no matter how small) if you ignore the new specs and play the exact build you’re playing in live right now?
Thanks
Depends. Will you be playing the same content youre playing in live now? Or will you be playing HOT content.
Some elites are upgrades in both (mesmer and reaper for example) so for those the answer is yes.
Some are only going to be “meta” in raids but not in old content (druid, and maybe scrapper?), so the answer is probably no here.
And some are mostly useless (tempest, probably guards), so again no.
Just speculating, but if you want a class where you wont be kicked out of super serious meta dungeon runs for not buying HOT, eles and guards seem like a good choice.

Oh I’m definitely buying HoT. I was really just curious if all Thieves/Ele’s would have to play their Elite specs for high end content/PvP in order to get the most out of their characters

The dodge changes and the crippling of our acrobatics traitline almost ensure DD will be used by most if not all thieves, as for the staff weapon, i dont see it being used outside of PvP

Yea the Staff animations and abilities are what I don’t find appealing at all. Do most think it will really replace other weapons for PvP? Meh

Synergizes REALLY well with P/P from my beta experience with it, but eh D/P will still maintain its throne

For any staff build you can think of you can replace the staff with S/D and immediately become much more effective.
reaper will most likely replace pve runs.
as for pvp, probably, altho there will always be a place for life blasts viability.
for wvw, depends on what the user wants to run. im sure we will see a surge of reapers in the train, altho im guessing most will switch back to life blast because it is 100x better for wvw.

Hmm, interesting. If this is true does ANet know about it? Seems pretty ridiculous that their new feature is inferior to old builds…

Well, it’s inferior but not strictly inferior – you can smash 5 over and over to do a ton of damage to a target for instance, which is not something S/D is able to offer. So at least in principle it has a niche.

Well they might replace meta builds, but you can use discipline (old profession set) and berserker (elite spec) TOGETHER on warrior if you want… (planing to run arms, discipline and berserker.)
Been There, Done That & Will do it again…except maybe world completion.
Straight off the bat, some elite specs will be required or will outperform non elite traitlines depending on content.
Longterm, we will have to wait and see. Elite specialisations are supposed to be sidegrades, so balancing and changes are bound to happen.
Warrior elite spec will most likely not be meta.
Depends, I think it will not either, but iof you need -condition dmg- with a warrior it will be required… I’m sure.

Mimic is still a thing, 4 feedbacks with a few buttons… well maybe 3 and a half, but who cares
I know I will try them to see if I like any of the elites. If I don’t like them I can always change back really easy. So I just figured why not try them for myself? I mean, no one knows how I play except for me anyway …….
