Will We See a Re-emergence of Old Classes?
Don’t get me wrong, I would LOVE to see a GW2 version of the Dervish (and, to a certain extent, the Ritualist), but I have a hard time seeing what combat role these classes would excel at that the classes we already have can’t.
You do know that Monks are impossible because Anet will not introduce a purely support class and the parts of the Monk that they do wanted to introduce ended up with the Guardian right?
Dervishes are too closely linked to the human gods and in terms of gameplay are actually quite similar to Guardians (even though Guardians wear heavy armor and don’t wield scythes).
Ritualists are Engineers with a Necromancy-like vibe while the Paragon’s skills and gameplay ended up getting divided between Guardians and Warriors.
I’m more than fine with the current professions (in fact I think they cover most if not all archetypes), as long as their options of weapon types and utility/healing/elite skills get expanded.

They could have a Monk as in a martial artist.
Monks – Abysmal odds: The decision not to have a dedicated Healer/Support class was one of the most highly publicized development choices made. Even though they’ve ditched practically every other part of the Manifesto, the return of Monks would really look bad for them. It would be interpreted by many as a stark admission of failure in their design. Further, all the most GW2-compatible parts of Monk were absorbed by Guardian. So the stuff they still have wouldn’t translate over easily, and they’d need a bunch of new stuff to replace what Guardians took, which means a hypothetical GW2 Monk would be almost totally unrecognizable. Given what a publicity SNAFU it would be, I can’t see it ever making it into even preliminary development.
Paragons – Very poor odds: After swallowing Monks whole, Guardians ordered Paragons for desert, but were too full for the whole thing, so they split the order with Warriors. There’s really nothing left of this class to bring forward. But at least bringing Paragons back wouldn’t be seen as the same kind of declaration of failure that Monks would be.
Dervish – Abysmal odds: Once again, those greedy Guardians stole some of their schtick, but far less than Monks or Paragons. The real killer for the Dervish is lore-based. We have five PC races now, only one of which worships the Gods, and one of which is murderously hostile towards the Gods. The only way we’d see Dervish added is if it were race-restricted… and that would pretty much require a race-exclusive class for anyone blocked out of it (most likely, one race-exclusive class for each race). The development difficulty therefore skyrockets, and puts a nail in the Dervish’s coffin.
Ritualist – Poor odds: Things don’t look great for the Ritualist, but nowhere near as bad as for the other classes. Yeah, Necromancers have picked over some of their themes, while Engineers have gobbled up some of their mechanics, but they haven’t been wholly chopped up like Monk and Paragon have. Even so, I’d bet on more Ritualist stuff getting drawn on for future Necromancer weapon additions and new utility skills, rather than the class as a whole getting brought back.

If they made a Martial Arts Class, they would never re-use the Monk name. Also a barehanded fighting style is more likely as a weapon addition for all classes, rather than the foundation of a totally new class.

Yeah, you make a valid point.

Staff as a melee weapon.
Just throwing that out there.
I think they said recently they were happy with the 8 classes they have now and they think all bases are covered by those 8…
it was mentioned that if a new class would be introduced, it would be a heavy
we have to do things others may qualify as “evil”.

Which is what i want. The problem is thinking of something that isn’t already covered.
think developers already addressed this and said no
i for one miss classes such as dervish and monk. i was just wondering from ANet or other fan opinions of seeing old favorites return with expansions such as Janthir or even separate releases of their own.
Even if they did…the classes they already kept like necro and mesmer are NOTHING like the old classes. So who cares if they add yet another class with damage dealing/support capability? It’s not like 8 of the same isn’t enough.
I miss the old classes like the mesmer and necro myself and the ritualist too….except for a couple of the names though none of these classes exist in GW2.

Dervish: AoE autoattack with the scythe. That was the dervish’s role in GW1 as well.
