Will there be further tiers in the future?
Of course there will be. Years down the road I don’t want to be using the same weapon….
Yes. And then gear inspecting, and then dps meter, and then flying mounts, and then…
That would be too easy, wouldn’t it? If they straight-up told us whether or not there would be more tiers, we would be able to each form stable and accurate opinions on whether we actually find this game to be worth our time.
But I’m sure we’ll just have to live with deciphering ambiguity.
ANetOur Studio Design Director Chris Whiteside just posted this:
“I’d like to respond to concerns players have raised about ascended items. Please keep in mind that we’re releasing this as one portion of a massive November update that introduces and improves many aspects of challenge, progression, and rewards. With this and upcoming updates, we view ourselves as introducing large amounts of content with supporting systems and features, akin to an expansion pack, building on Guild Wars 2 through a series of live releases. So it’s important for us to be able to add an expansion pack’s worth of progression and rewards to support that content.
Our goal is not to create a gear treadmill. Our goal is to ensure we have a proper progression for players from exotic up to legendary without a massive jump in reward between the two. We will slowly add the remaining ascended gear items and legendary items in future updates to allow people time to acquire them as we add exciting new content that deserves exciting rewards. We will not be adding a new tier of gear every 3 months that we expect everyone to chase after and then get the next set and so on.
Ascended and infusion rewards will be available in both PvE and WvW over time, and be made available through all sorts of content around the world including existing content. PvP will remain unaffected to ensure our intended PvP balance going forward. We are also working on other reward and progression systems for the game that tie into current and new content and features. As you know we care very much about your support and opinion and are listening intently to what you say.
Finally we look forward to hearing your thoughts on the upcoming content, and we will ensure we share our thoughts with you on the experiences we share in the Lost Shores."Chris Whiteside – Studio Design Director
Yeh hard work for max armor only to know 6 month down the road it will be obsolete. Not worth the time and farming for gold has become difficult. I’m gonna put my sword down for the time being. Good luck the the rest of yah
According to a recent German interview, they weren’t closing the door on the idea entirely. Hence the exaggerated “will not be adding a new tier of gear every 3 months” comment that Thirsty posted. They didn’t want to say verbatim, “No, it will never happen,” because they don’t want to have yet even more problems.
So the answer is, “Maybe.” Even they don’t know, but anyone who definitely says no is just being a fanboy. Anyone who definitely says yes is just being a doomsday prophet. Considering they did this knowing it would be a very unpopular move (as stated in the same German interview), I imagine it’s leaning more towards, yes, there being more gear tiers added, eventually.
Just to throw it out for contrast: Guild Wars 1 had only a single tier of gear, and it was based on your level. Level 20? Get level 20 armor. The end. The only problematic aspect of outfitting yourself was the odd out kind of rune that had no balance to it other than rarity, which was in this case, Superior Vigor and Superior Absorption. Absorption was eventually rendered worthless, but vigor remained a problem since there was no downside to using one. That’s the only gearing problem I can ever remember anyone having in that game. Once you hit level 20, you were put right next to an armor vendor who sold you max level gear for next to nothing, because the developers wanted you at your best, since the point of the game was never your equipment.
No more tiers according to the Blogs
However they are going to tier the Infusions from Fine to Legendary to add in the slots
Since the stats on the Infusions will increase with color ya better gear will be available I guess it you want to say that or you can say you’ll have better Infusions
They also stated in the blogs that all new content will based around the Ascended gear. what does that mean?
Much like each WoW expansion Mobs will need more HP and so will you because you will do more damage and probably so will the mobs.
How long between each Infusion expansion?" Only the Shadow knows what evil lurks in the hearts of Anet Live Dev team"
It took Blizzard, what 6 years to address anything in the Vanilla portion of the game
I don’t understand why new content has to have mobs hitting harder and taking more punishment.
Again I cite GW1 and all the expansions as an example. 90% of Cantha and Elona was aimed at max level characters and it was easy to get geared and leveled up as a result of this.
It did not make the campaigns any less fun.
By making mobs beefier all they’re doing is forcing us to GRIND before clearing content, instead of just clearing content.

I think what ANet is trying to do is to NOT make it as easy because GW2 is a MMO and GW1 wasn’t.

Grind =/= difficulty.
Underworld in GW1 was difficult, yet we did it when we were already sporting maxed gear.
Also, I think I need to stop seeing that excuse everywhere, because you cannot tout a game such as GW2 as “different than the rest” and “tantalizing to people who generally don’t like MMOs” and then go and do what everyone else is doing.
All those promises down the drain.

I won’t do that.
For me, lack of a straight answer will be taken as tacit confirmation of further tiers, and that will be that.

Online play, hosted. Check.
Persistent world. Check.
Thousands of concurrent players. Check.
That thar’s an MMO, Jim.

As said before this “grind” is optional. You DO NOT need ascended gear in order to finish the current available content. You DO NOT need ascended gear for WvWvW in order to stay competitive.

For starters, players on my server are already starting to demand level 80s in full exotics for their runs.
Second of all:
It’s called “slippery slope”.
The current content is built towards the gear players have at the moment. But unfortunately the point of the current content is to get MORE gear.
So that you can do the next content.
To get MORE gear.
And so on, and so forth.
They could have made the point of the content, oh I don’t know, enjoyment. Story-driven campaigns which unlocked new skills, weapons, classes. GW1 did it. It worked. I played the game from launch and loved it.

You have all the rights to be worried about the future of the game but please stop assuming so much. Where does it say the point of new content is to get more gear? The way I see it is that new gear is just a part of new content. It’s not mandatory, it’s not necessary but if you want it then its there for you to obtain, if you don’t want it then fine, just enjoy the new dungeons, new pvp maps, new story driven world events.

What is there to assume? This is the nature of what they introduced.
Hell, the fact that their blog entry says “we won’t be releasing new tiers every 3 months” suggests that there’s a good chance they will be releasing new tiers eventually.
What point is there in new tiers unless they are eventually required to clear the content? It’s called power creep.

A chance is all it is, do you know for sure that will happen? No. Is it a possiblity? Yes. The fact is that it’s only been 2 days since patch and yet people are already assuming that things are heading for the worst.
I don’t like the fact that ANet doesn’t directly respond to the issues that keep rising up here at the forums but at the same time I understand how dangerous it is for them to make any kind of statement because of type of community this is.
Why is it dangerous to make a statement? If they tell me this is their design choice and how the game will work now then I will leave and you won’t hear from me again.
They already have my money, what the hell difference does it make? All I ask is that they spare me the trouble of sticking around.
Also, you’ll forgive me if I take the logical assumption that they will not revert what’s already been done, as I have never ever seen it happen in the past.
Another trend in the forums for said games (ie Blizzard forums, tbh), is to relax, that nothing is final, that the game or the patch or the expansion is in its early stages. That there’s no point in complaining or stressing out.
Yet, without fail, the worst always happens.

I wish GW2 was about getting obtaining more Skills rather than attaining more gear.
:(
Of course they will. Do you really think they’d only add one gear? It was made clear this is the beginning of “item progression.”

Yup. I miss capturing elites.
It became even more fun when they introduced heroes and then later when they removed the cap on how many you could take on a party.
By the end of the game’s lifetime it gave me great pleasure creating full party builds that worked like a well-oiled machine.
Where has that creativity gone? You can’t do anything like that in GW2.

It’s dangerous because things don’t always tend to go according to plan. And ANet is learning this fact fast.

I sure hope so. It feels like we’re getting ignored so far.
Anet had created the ascended armor this armor is better then the exotic, a thing that make exotic a bad choice down the road. What will happen in the next patch? Anet want to take care their “most dedicated players” those players will want better and better gear to feel more powerful then the rest of the casuals, in order to do that Anet will need to build new content with best in slot items as the base line. tyria will be obsolete just like end game vanilla content in WoW, who went to the brilliant scholomance after the burning crusade had been released?
Do you think people will go the vanilla dungeons? There is a race to delve deeper in to the heart of the mists in order to get better and better gear, vanilla dungeons will be obsolete, tyria will be obsolete. just like low level content in any other MMO.

Haha yeah, though it seems they make statements on outlets other than their official forums (reddit, twitter, etc.) which is kinda weird imo
“Adding item progression is a delicate process normally undertaken in an expansion, but we feel it’s important to strive to satisfy the basic needs of our players sooner rather than later.”
“… normally undertaken in an expansion …”
More tiers coming? I don’t see why you have any reason to believe otherwise. Eventually the grinding crowds will have full ascended. What then?
