Window...of...Opportunity?
I think they just want to discourage people from camping these world bosses. What I mean is, these events are probably for people who happen to be in the zone at the time it spawns.
These are Meta events and tied to the completion of other dynamic events which have their own fail or success states.
For instance, the Shadow Behemoth only spawns when both the Champion Oakheart is downed and the Monastery is cleared during the window. If Sister Brenda is dead in the swamp since no one protected her during the escort event, the chain of events will never cycle around to driving back the centaurs from the Monastery.
I think in events like the dragons where there are no pre-quests (claw and teq) that the window was put in as a mistaken tool to limit camping. It just did and still does the opposite. The only thing it did was cause creative people to post dragon timers on the internet. It is a in-build philosophy to make a spawn window that I don’t think has ever been tested to see what impact it has on enjoyment of the event itself, it is just assumed to be good for something.
Ya i agree yarg. It’s understandable when there’s a string of quests linked together to get to the main one being triggered shortly after…that’s logical, and not what im particularly addressing, but for a fight to randomly spawn in a time frame just because, it’s almost like it’s something that was so set in stone for an mmo accidentally carried over, (much like taxes in mmo’s, but that’s another can of worms) You will never stop campers for high reward events such as this. Plus, since the update to the reward system for this, any typical player such as myself, will try to attend 4-5 different bosses and move on with another activity. I really have no purpose in camping them all day. All in all, it really doesn’t bother me too much about the windows, but when you have a limited time to play, and you enjoy fighting these bosses, waiting let’s say 1hr for Jormag to spawn can become a snooozer.
I think it was supposed to give the appearance of these being random events and give the zones some variety.
If they were all player activated and could be started at any time then popular ones would just be up 24/7 and less popular ones would be like traditional quests – go speak to an NPC and right on cue the danger you’ve already agreed to stop shows up, ready to be defeated. If they were on a fixed timer it’d be the same but if anything more boring. 6:00pm, time for the Shadow Behemoth. 7:15, Maw, 8:10 Shatterer, and so on.
This way you could pass through a zone 3 or 4 times and never see an event, or even a clue that it might happen, then all of a sudden the 5th time you come across it.
Of course this being an MMO it was never really going to work like that for a lot of people. As soon as people got into the game they were trying to figure out how it’s run and find all the “hidden” mechanics, then promptly set up websites with walkthroughs and timers and all the rest of it so you’re back to being on a schedule or activating bosses just so you can kill them.
