the windows updated realtek sound drivers might not work. Like usual, microsoft does change the driver abi during development. Driver issues should be the largest problem

other than that, it works.

Please note; windows is not like mac or linux. Microsoft devote insane amount of engineering effort to maintain the userspace abi. Basically, it is rare for an application to not be compatible with newer windows versions.

Are they calling the next Windows OS “Windows 10” instead of “Windows 9”?

I grabbed drivers for windows 8.1 and they are working fine. Make sure video card, network card and soundcard all have latest drivers from the venders website, not the motherboard website.

Yes, to stop confusion with Windows 95, 98 etc.

They also are naming it 10 because of the decision to skip 9 all together.

No they don’t. They’re skipping the good version.

Vista and 8 were trash, XP and 7 were good ones.

Running windows 10 for a while. Stable. A few disconnects. Could be internet provider issue. So far so major issues.

I’m on 8, far more stable, boots up faster and safer than 7. And the start bar can be modded in.
The only problem with Vista as well was the fact that majority of the programs lacked compatibility with it.

I remember a rumor floating around is that lazy devs back then test against vendor string “windows 9” for windows 95 and 98 compatibility.

Microsoft known for their backward compatibility bump the windows version up one version to solve that issue

Those had to have been some very inept (not lazy) programmers. Windows has an internal version number accessible via API precisely so programs don’t run into this sort of problem when checking which version of Windows they’re running on.

Windows 3.x = 3.x
Windows 95 = 4.0
Windows 98 = 4.1
Windows 2000 = 5.0
Windows XP = 5.1
Windows Server 2003 = 5.2
Windows Vista = 6.0
Windows 7 = 6.1
Windows 8 = 6.2
Windows 8.1 = 6.3
Windows 10 = supposedly 10.0 (not 6.4 or 7.0)

Basically, the way it works is that the major version number is before the decimal, the minor version after. When you make a Windows app, you make it for a major version number. Upgrades to the minor version number shouldn’t affect your app, so it can be assumed to run.

Changes in major version number denote major architectural changes (3.x to 4.x moved from Windows being a program running on top of DOS to having a version of DOS built-in. 5.x moved to the Windows NT kernel. 6.x forced apps to run with user level privileges, instead of defaulting to admin). So it’s highly unlikely your app will continue to run after a major version number change. Consequently, your app is supposed to be programmed so if it detects a different major version number, it throws up an error box saying it isn’t supported on this version of Windows, and to buy/download an updated version. XP-era apps might run in Vista/7/8 in compatibility mode.

The only problem with Vista as well was the fact that majority of the programs lacked compatibility with it.

That’s really unfair to the people who wrote those programs. Ever since DOS and Windows 1.0, Microsoft assumed you were the sole user of the computer. There was no need for security because hey, it was your computer, you should be able to do anything you wanted with it.

Windows 2000 introduced the concept of different users with different privileges, but allowed Windows programs to act as if they were admin for backward compatibility reasons. Vista is when they forced apps to run as a user instead of admin, which is what “broke” a lot of programs.

Really, Microsoft should have switched to the multi-user model starting with Windows 95 (when they added a TCP/IP stack, allowing Windows users to get on the Internet). And they should have begun enforcing programs running without admin privileges back then. Failing that, they should’ve done it with Windows 2000, since NT was designed from the ground up to run multiuser. Their failure to do so for 4 releases of Windows led programmers to think they could continue writing as if their programs would have admin privileges forever. Which led to the compatibility and UAC popup fiasco when Vista took away running as admin.

Seriously, it’s superior to Windows 7 in many ways. The weird touchscreen start menu takes some getting used to, but it’s so much easier to use and I can bring my computer from cold to fully booted and logged in within 10 seconds. It’s actually too fast because I can’t do anything while I’m waiting #FirstWorldProblems

Yup, agreed.
