so, I have a keen eye for performance and color so when I updated to windows 8.1 I was surprised, here is why.

the good!
First off, textures look a lot sharper, and text looks a lot better!
things are a lot more optimized, smoother.

the bad.
More driver issues, and the game seems to run alittle slower for me on 2x gtx 690s.

here is a screen shot, but I don’t know if it does it justice

i dont see how windows would make it look any different.

Only time o.s has made games look “better” is when windows forces you to have to upgrade to get the latest dx, which happend from windows xp to windows 7 (windows xp didnt support dx11 even though it could have is ms wanted it to, it was just a scam to get people to upgrade to windows 7.)

So even if you did go from windows xp to windows 8, gw2 should’nt look any better since gw2 is dx9.

Going to WIndows 8 grants a significant speed boost to those who have over 4 processor cores.

ANyways, there’s a bug with 8.1 in GW2 at this moment where if you alt tab the game crashes.

can you please show me some proof, link me a benchmark or somthing because i find it impossible that the o.s increases 4 core proccessor performance IN A GAME.

I also find it hard to believe that windows 8 increases performance with quad cores even on basic os tasks.

Ive read that windows 8 requires more rescources actually, (not that this would make a significant impact)

Btw i work in the computer industry, that DOES NOT mean im always right but i just don’t understand how these things you guys are stating could possibly work.

EDIT: ok you said over 4 cores, but even still, that wouldnt effect guild wars 2’s usage of over 4 cores because guildwars 2 .exe and the A.P.I (AKA DIRECT X ) control these functions.

I don’t have actual benchmarks, but appcontainers help keep processes from borrowing CPU time from each other. Like in the case of a hanging app not killing other apps ability to monopolize the processor cycles while they were active. Plenty of core components can impact anything on top of them that use those services. The structure of the drivers for win8 for talking to the graphics controller could easily impact a games performance. OS is core level stuff, anything it does more efficiently only helps everything running on top of it.

I work in IT field as well, more specifically under technical support. Windows 8 provides a performance boost to Guild Wars 2, because it’s much more optimized to modern processors; Guild wars 2 is extremely processor intensive.

Just because Guild Wars 2 doesn’t take full advantage of hardware, does not mean that it is impossible to get better performance with another operating system.

First, working in the computer industry means nothing unless you deal with machine level hardware design&coding. Building stuff off hardware can be done as early as 12 years old.

Second -Resources are usually poured into the latest OS. Like it or not, optimisation goes towards stuff that drives profit. Windows 7 while still widely used, is aging. Win 8 has been getting mixed reviews, but in my opinion, it is nothing like the Win Millennium bull that i’ve used in the past. I dare say i liked it better that Win7.

Third – Guild Wars 2 is massively CPU intensive, especially in WVW or Jorlag. I’m using a quad I7 and I lag in massive events. Nothing too surprising here if Win 8.1 handles threads better than Win 7.

i know gw2 is cpu intensive, but i dont see any proof that windows 8 inproves gaming performance enough for it to make a difference what-so-ever, if it did i’d be the first to be updating os.

And as far as i know, the games themselves need to be programmed to take advantage of multiple cores, gw2 i think only uses 2 cores i believe.

If say game a is only programmed to use 2 cores (most current games dont even use 4 cores) how can the o.s help improve that?

Also keep in mind theirs some games that run better on less cores because their so unoptimized for using multiple cores.

All im saying is, the communties im involved with would know if windows 8 improved gaming performance, and their would be benchmarks proving this.

But anyways i was more talking to the O,P about how i dont think windows 8 makes his game look nicer like he implied, thats all my first post was about.

Here’s a lesson about Windows (MicroSoft)
Windows 8 is just trash, the only good thing about it, is the boot time. But still, win8 pc’s use GPT harddrive partition tables. It’s sooooo bad. First thing i did with my win8 laptop from my work, was removing everything and set the partition table to MBR. Why is GPT bad? cus it’s only compatible with win8 and maybe 7, but 7 default is MBR. Microsoft is like the biggest scum company in the software world. MS just tries to make your PC work only with their products. They spent alot of money to spread lies about openGL in order to promote DirectX that only works on their OS, while openGL is faster and works on all OS’s. Can u imagine that all games worked on all systems!! to bad MS had to spend millions to spread the lies, but hey, it kept them popular, cus games are the only reason to use windows. So stupid that schools teach directx instead of openGL cus of MS. MicroSoft makes me sick.

Is not a bug with Guild Wars, every single game played on fullscreen crashes when you try to alt+tab back into it (atleast on AMD cards) so it’s either a problem with the new GPU drivers or the OS itself (probably the former).

now none of my prior posts were talking about any bugs as i have no idea about the bug you described, although apparently it should be effecting me

If you can see a difference of 0.0x FPS then you deserve the crapfest that is Win8.

WinDRM8 is simply Microsofts attempt to kick Steam out of the Market and monopolize all of PC Gaming.
But I guess if one needs to always have the latest(& oh so best) then Win8 is the way to go.

And I´ll believe the miracles Win8 is supposedly able to make the crappy GW2 engine do when I see cold hard FPS and CPU load numbers.
Oh yeah and I´m in the computer industry for a couple of decades too, so where´s MY kitten cookie?

Seriously, there’s really nothing you can do to convince the people to like windows 8,if they fear the change. No sense in arguing, it’s pretty obvious that some of these people have no clue how computers work or “inspiring technicians” that just read the first chapter of their certifications booklets.

1-5 fps, so 2.5 fps more average… is nothing actually ive done benchmarks with my o.s where the difference has been that.

ANYWAY, HE SAID IT MADE THE GAME LOOK BETTER NOT THAT IT GAVE HIM MORE FPS. THATS WHAT I WAS ARGUEING ABOUT,

Yes windows 8 does give some games a negligable boost.
