Unlucky since launch, RNG isn’t random

Am I the only one who dislikes the horrendous physics of the wings? I bought the Black Feather Wings and the new White Wings looked floppy so I logged on my mesmer and the new physics were applied to the Black ones as well. I’m not a fan as they look like I’m wearing curtains on my back.
Think I’m pressing the refund button but if you enjoy the new physics cool.
Yes i think they are a huge improvement
Sooooo…. what’s there left to discuss?
I prefer them now, they are more realistic looking than the concrete wings we had before. They react to the air resistance as you run. Yay, physics!
People complained the wings were too stiff. Anet agreed.
I think it’s better now, since it doesn’t look like like cardboard cutouts that look ‘horrendously’ stiff anymore. :p
I suppose you’re a fan of the styrofoam brick animations they used to be?
inb4 wing backpacks can be used as gliders with the intended physics animations
I like them, especially on my ranger
Sooooo…. what’s there left to discuss?
Lol sorry talk amongst yourselves
I suppose you’re a fan of the styrofoam brick animations they used to be?
Well I did buy them so…. Yes. I prefer the holographic dragon wings animation but I bought the previous physics.

Which is a fair point and constructive feedback is good for them to improve them. Just bear in mind the backlash on the old physics was what got them changed to how it is.
As dubious as it may be, A-net cited the previous wings to be “bugged”… a.k.a the wings have always meant to have this animation.
I know it sucks if you preferred them before, Aiden. Unfortunately for you the majority seem to prefer the more realistic version.

I completely understand why they made the change of they were unpopular, just as they should understand why I’m not keeping mine. I don’t fault them changing them but they’re so floppy.

As I’ve stated I hope people enjoy the new version.
the wings should be kitten for gods sake. not stiff like the first black edition nor feathery-like as the white edition.
it should fap like the sunless wings or the blue dragon shattered wings
@Zackie, I’m pleased they don’t flap. They’re so huge on norn and charr that they would be obstructive for other players. At least the sunless wings are small and the dragon wings are translucent.

Those curtains wings already obstruct a lot, I can’t even see mobs if there are 2-3 players with that backpiece around.

To me, sometimes the animation makes them look like a piece of cloth cut into the shape of wings.
People complained the wings were too stiff. Anet agreed.
And overshoot the mark in the other direction.
As usual.

I knew I’d get this response.
So, what’s worse? Huge wings moving all over the place (and overall obstructing a larger portion of your vision) or a version that’s relatively static? At least with the static version, you know where they’ll be and can make camera adjustments accordingly.
Oh, also, don’t worry about seeing them all over the place now. Give it a week or two and there will be far fewer people wearing them. It’s a fad- most people are wearing them because they’re new and like to show off recent purchases, very few people have integrated them as a permanent feature of their current look.
Yesterday after a patch while hapilly exploring LA i saw a few people yelling at some guy who had white wings, ptetty nasty name calling tbh for no reason.
Honestly is annoying how floppy the wings are. They seem like there are no muscles in them at all…

Yep/ One would think there should be a lot of options for wing material in between “styrofoam” and “paper”.
Ya’ all know wings support the bird’s entire bodyweight when gliding, and are stiff enough to generate THRUST when flapping… This can’t be a secret known only to bird owners.
There is nothing realistic about the new wing physics… unless the goal was to mimic mediocre cosplay.
I like it compared to the old wing stiffness. could use more work, but happy with them as is.

Well, they’re fake wings attached to the body by harness straps. So… yes?
While they could be better still, I think the new wing mechanics are much better. They actually move something like a real wing, rather than something like a pair of cardboard wings taped to the character back.
When I saw how the white ones moved, I bought them.
People complained the wings were too stiff. Anet agreed.

Your opinion. Mine differs.
Live with it and stop jabbing at people who don’t agree with you for a change. :p
Before the wings were too stiff. Now they look like curtains. I still like their looks, but I can’t imagine any bird with wings that floppy.
I wasn’t a big fan of the wings being overly stiff as they were before, but I find the current look to be even worse. It’s like a sheet hanging down now. The current fix is rather sloppy. ANet, study this video and rework the wings, please: How Bird Wings Work – Smarter Every Day 62
We’ll thank you later!
They were too stiff before and too loose and floppy now. Somewhere in the middle is recommended.
Wouldn’t it be funny if the new wings look like floppy cloth because they ARE floppy cloth? I mean, what if they really are just cosplay decorations? Literally in game lore, I mean. They are backpieces after all.
Maybe the crazy fashion designer at the Black Lion trading co. foresaw fake wings as a hot new fashion trend and started sewing some up?

^
First too stiff and then too floppy. They need additional framework to move more naturally.
But, who are we kidding in asking for a fix. Ourselves, that’s who. They release a badly pixilated red panda mini and never clean that up. They’ll never touch this either. The days when ANet made sure their ingame store products were quality for the money is long gone.
The wings are flexi prims. I’d rather see them flap. The coding for that is done, as the holographic wings flap. Other than that they are ok except the way they tend to fold on jumping.
The new physics of the wings are terrible.
So, has anyone here actually looked at wings? Guess what: They are stiff, because they have to be. They don’t flop around like overcooked linguini. If they did in real life, birds would not be able to fly. Look at a condor or a large raptor flying.
Yeah, I would love it if maybe they were a bit smaller, flexed and flapped. But this wet noodle thing is poor physics.
Update
I filed a refund ticket as I hate the floppy wings now and was told I couldn’t get a refund and that I should be more careful what I buy from the gemstore. I liked what I bought not what they were patched to. I’m more than a bit miffed at the response but I’ll assume the GM thought I’d purchased the white ones.
This isn’t over
People fail to see that unlike the tequatl and holographic wings, these were never mean to “flap”, in that you can see it in their names. The back pieces that flapped never had “Backpack” attended to their names. Which as far as I see would leave me to believe “real wings” won’t be called backpacks. One exception to this would the the Daydreamer’s Wings Backpack but those ones are a bit different for visual but obvious reasons.

I never asked them to flap and didn’t expect them to flap. What I don’t want them to do is flop.
They need an internal structure so they hang like real wings, not limp, cotton stuffed winged shaped backpieces.

Intermal structure? Hang? That’s just an “improved” version of what it used to be, which was ugly. In terms of wings, either they flap, or we just deal with it.
Last time they tried something like what you suggested and aside from the feathered wings, it ended up on the ‘cloth’ portions of some armor pieces in which you’d certainly expect for them just to simply “flow”. Needless to say, it looked ugly.
They aren’t going to be able satisfy everyone because the wings inherently can’t. They either keep the same ‘ol ugly rigidity, loosen it up like they are now, or make’em flap. From what I understand, making them hang like you suggested won’t change much or at the very least anything from what they are now.
Unless you mean like “closing” as they do on real birds and “opening” when in movement or falling. Essentially reacting very specifically to the action taking place. That would be new.
If you bought wings based on how they looked originally and they changed how they looked, you should be entitled to return them, no?

Are you telling me that it’s impossible for the wings to be between as rigid as they were and as loose as they are now? Somehow I doubt that. I’m sure it’s quite possible to put some stiffening in the wings so they don’t flop like they are filled with cotton batting yet not as stiff as they were before. They only need not to bend unnaturally when running so that they look like they are boneless. They can also lift a bit when moving and lower again when stopped to look more natural.
While I’d certainly prefer a flapping-version of these wings (I bought both the black and white version) I still think the stiff version was better than the cape-like physics that they show now.
Wings are supposed to have bones and muscles in them and even if they are just backpacks, there are supposed to be stabilising beams instead of bones. Now the wings are just rubber and I wonder when they’ll fall off.
Edit: Also the feathers are treated as one piece, which looks really silly. If the feathers were separated like the holographic shatterer-wings it would look so much better.

I prefer something in between the original and the present situation, if I turn around the wings fold armound me…. especially with big characters (My norn and charr) this is quite ugly. I love them being more “alive” but I find the present "floppy"ness is quite ugly.
I would like it if when my character ran the wings would stick out to each side horizontally, like I was trying to take off. (example below)
http://ibc.lynxeds.com/files/pictures/2011_08_20_Diomedea_exulans7.JPG
Also, when I fall wearing them, they should go up in a “V” shape like a bird of prey’s wings just before it hits its prey. (example below)
The movements of the current feathery wings is better than them being compleatly stiff – BUT when characters run (wich they do a lot) the wings loose their shape and look like 2 sheets flapping behind, bending backwards in a strange manner, especially on a distance.
The wing physics were discussed in another thread as well. Have any of u played “neverwinternight” and a specialised profession called “DragonDiciple”? They grew draconic wings when they reached a certain lvl. These wings had an animation that followe u’r characters movements. It would be wonderful if wings in GW2 could do the same. I’d gladly pay 1000Gems for something with that much work behind.
The animations cold be something like;
While…
…Running: Folded slightly backwards as to not catch too much wind.
…Standing still; Be folded quite tightly, close to the body.
…when using “Rooting” skills such as spells/barrage etc; Spread out a bit backwards and outwards.
…Falling; Flapping as to try to actually fly to prevent the fall from happening. Laying on the ground the wings could be spread out in a rough manner.
…during ordinary fight; Slightly loosened as to support balance.
…Swooping skills/long leaps; Spread out as to support the long leap and get extra lifting power.
This would probably demand a set of wings that have a slightly different design to the feathery wings we have now. These would probably demand a more bird-like design, to support the physical movements including proper joints. But – it would be SO COOL!!!

Honestly I don’t have a lot a confidence that Anet believes something like this is doable going by some of the animations/physics of certain armor and back piece skins. Whether this is possibly a design decision due to time constraints or incapability by the game engine, is unknown. Plausible though, given the size of the studio and their reputation when up against a AAA brand measuring stick with big names like Blizzard, Bethesda, or EA.
I won’t say this affects me much because I’d much rather have better-looking armor physics or animations in the same vein as the heavy armor leggings “Grasping Dead Legguards” and medium armor chest piece “Marauder Jacket”. Not the kitten ugly rubberbanding other leggings and chest pieces(the trench coats) retain.
The wings physics went from paper mache to toilet paper
forums bug /15char
I equipped a pair (and spent a few minutes running round in circles) and I think the physics may be more accurate then they seem.
While most birds seem to have more rigid wings, most birds keep their wings pressed against their sides while they not flying. Obviously this doesn’t work for humanoid species – unless you want to attempt a count duckula impersonation. I’m also left with the impression that the wings become harder because the bird tenses them for flight – so they would be droopier when relaxed.
Another point is that in most representations of avian humanoids I’ve seen, two facts remained consistant – winged people are not known for running at high speeds AND humanoids with wings tend to retract their wings closer to their backs when walking. If you look at your wings, the arch (where the hollow bone support rod type thing is) of the wing is rigid, it is only the ridiculously over-sized feathers at the bottom of the wing which are droopy. If your character retracted their wings closer to their backs while walking or running, the droopiness would actually look much more realistic – obviously though, Anet isn’t going to make a backpiece retract during running unless it required legendary tier farming.
