Wings look so ridiculous
I’m not talking about the gliders which are fine but the wings as back item look so ridiculous and don’t really match the original style of GW1 imo. Should’ve left them in Aion.
I don’t disagree, but the djinn’s outta the bottle. Not really sure what point there is to this thread.

I also can’t see the point… They aren’t going to just remove them now… But I must agree that adding them into the game was a mistake. As adding a lot of other things… Players no longer match the surrounding world and its characters.
They look okay, its just that some of them are comically large. Wings like spinal blades and dwayna are fine, but feathered or golden wings are gigantic.
There seems to be only two sizes to wings: “Normal” and “I can’t see anything.”
I’m usually really sweet… but this an internet forum and you know how it has to be.

Wings are quite rubbish, but not nearly as bad as that ridiculous SAB cloud glider.
Excelsior.
Man, I fully agree. I often feel like Hasbro has a merchandise contract to promote some Barby Fairytopia spin-offs in GW2. What I have “problems” with is mostly that it either collides with the style (Militant Charr with huge wings…) and that there are no gliders that fit a thief. The default glider, even dyed to black, looks like a purple (?!) beach tent with confetti sprinkled on it. Ugh…
I always disliked too much ridiculously-looking stuff in Asian MMO, when the super duper warrior lady wears a witch hat, slippers with cat faces on it, wings, and a bikini. FF14 has had several cross-events that introduced hideous BS to a game that does not fit it at all. Seriously hoping GW2 goes back a bit more to the “militant”, “cool” style this franchise often had in the past.
and politically highly incorrect. (#Asuracist)

Your in for a rough time if how other people play upsets you. The ‘you’ is not directed at anyone in the thread; just try not to get hung up on it.

Just about anything on the internet goes!
I don’t like them either, they look completely out of place. However, they fund the game which is fair enough trade for me, so like people in real life, I just walk past and pay no attention.
I don’t like them either, along with most of these big glowing, flashy “look at me, aren’t I special?” items (something I imagine will get worse if/when custom mount stuff becomes available) .
But going by the amount of characters I see with them in game, I think it’s safe to assume the majority of players do like, and spend money on them. So as it pleases most of the player base (or at least seems to) , and keeps money coming into Anet, then I can’t really complain as it’s good for the game.
Besides, I’m sure I like things in the game that other people hate, so there’s always going to be something someone doesn’t like.
I like wings, if you don’t like wings don’t wear them.
It’s fashion wars 2 and aesthetics are a personal taste.
If you really can’t stand people with them, get good at PvP or WvW and kill only people wearing them for catharsis.
“Maybe I was the illusion all along!”
Why not add an option to disable viewing of other people’s backpacks? That way if you like then you can see them and not have them visible if you don’t?
^ It would be nice to just be able to turn off gaudy backpacks. The option could have a little more granularity than simply on or off, for example: Disable backpacks? – “no, eye-sores, all”.

Waste of development time.
This game have had flashy legendaries shooting rainbow ponies since day one, can’t see what’s changed.
^ They’ve been slowly adding options to turn off various flashy features. You never know.
Yeah, selectively turning off the backpacks on other players is a feature I never knew I wanted before they introduced the black/white wings and suddenly everyone and their fashion-challenged grandma was wearing the useless tacky things. I’m very much in favor of adding such an option specifically for backpacks. Sure, there’s an option to just turn off everything and have everyone wear the default outfit, but that’s just too much of a swing in the opposite direction imo.
I have nothing against wings. I don’t like them, but I don’t dislike them either.
However, as a player I do notice a huge lack of imagination. I want to fly on a firefly, or glide with a helicopter, or glide behind a thermonuclear rocket that explodes on impact , or a paper plane like the one I created in childhood, or be carried in claws of a pigeon like a paper message. There is not enough diversity in gliding, but this is just my humble opinion.
Unfortunately this discussion is opened too late. Heart of Thorns expansion (that introduced gliding) has reached an ending. I fail to see any good reason for gliding redesign now.

Soo… don’t use wings on your toons, and stop worrying about how other people choose to enjoy the game. Problem solved.
ehh this isnt gw1 so
They absolutely do look ridiculous. But some people like them, and it is making Anet a lot of money, so I don’t think we can do anything but moan about it.
Can’t imagine we will see many games anymore keeping their artistic integrity, since they’ve realized how much money they can make off kitten like this (and cash shops in general).

They’ve been adding weirder and weirder gliders, so maybe it wasn’t so much a lack of imagination at first as much as them not knowing what was possible, but experimenting with more and more varied glider designs as time goes on.
In any case, none of the ideas you’ve suggested above need a redesign of gliding. I think they’d all be feasible within the current design… except maybe the thermonuclear rocket. Lol. Making a big explosion every time you landed with the glider would probably start people asking for an option to turn off other people’s gliders. But I could see them doing the paper plane, the pigeon and the firefly. And there’s already a helicopter of sorts. So there you go. Keep wishing and you never know.
EDIT: I took your ideas to be glider suggestions, not wing suggestions because that’s how you described them later in that paragraph. Now back to your regular wings-related conversation.
Man, now I want to go buy a pair of the dragon ones just to upset you guys over nothing.
This thread is a reminder that not everyone can afford some gems and are mad at other peoples toys. Nothing really to see here.
An option to turn off other people’s backpacks? Why dont we just have an option that makes everyone but you into a basic npc so you can feel like a real hero.
EDIT: Also, I will make sure to wear wings all the time now.
I have over 20 characters. They all have a backpack of some sort or the other and a good percentage have wings. I have flappy wings, moth wings, butterfly wings, holographic wings, bat wings, dragon wings, sparkly wings and lovely big angel wings whose feathers tickle the noses of passers by. My only regret is that I can only play one character at a time.

That has to be the lamest thing I’ve seen on this forum, and I’ve seen some doozys. “Herrderr, these people that find some in game items to be an eye sore are just kitten poor peasants that can’t even afford a ten dollar pair of oversized wings, has nothing to do with having an actual subjective opinion of the games art style.”
The game looked very different during the early days. They simply seem to have given in at some point and went for the fan service people expected to see. Like them or hate them, they are certainly here to stay now with the gliding system.
Also, don’t forget:
Wings = Money
A lot different Wings = A lot of Money
A lot of palette swapped wings = A lot of easy Money

That options already exists in the Display Settings menu.

That’s BS. I spent a ton of money on this game, but not on those ridiculous wings. They look silly and out of place. Besides, you can easily turn gold to gems to buy the wings. Not that expensive.
