Wonder if Anet or players regret the icons
I’m color blind and about the only nodes I can see on the mini map are the mines. With trees and plants I am out of luck until I run across them exploring. In many cases I can’t see the red rings that indicate events. So I suppose, using your example, I’m at a slight advantage as far as exploring is concerned.
It’s a checklist for people who are not interested in the world in any way.
People who actually explore will see much more. For example the explorer achievements from Magumma and Shiverpeaks brought me to places I’ve never been before with over 10 characters I leved up in those areas.
PoI icons weren’t originally on the map and vistas didn’t exist at that time. Due to feedback, they were added to the map. Most people don’t want to run up and down every inch of the zone to find that last missing point.

I agree.
Having a detailed road map makes it feel less like exploring to me.
I am glad to have these points when working on map completion; however when I first enter a map I lose all interest in the minimap since there’s so much more to see. So many things going on and so many places to discover.
The first times completing a map was rather a ‘oh, I have discovered everything except those 3 poi’s. Which I ran past without coming close enough.’
I gues putting everything on the map can be a curse for some people; but for me personally it doesn’t ruin exploring; and is a blessing when I get to map completion.
EDIT: If you open your worldmap you can click on the eye in the bottom-left corner. Just start unchecking the boxes, your minimap will just show gathering nodes, waypoints and (I think) events.

Hmmmm, they were all on my map, there were no explored one on websites yet but the icons were there on my map for me, that’s how I found them when I started.

I guess that’s one of the things that bothered me: map completion. Again, I feel it’s just a way to cheapen a world because essential you “beat a zone”. That’s not what MMOs and exploration are to me.
I’m happy they are there.
I’m only interested in exploring when I do a map for the very first time.
I have completed world completion twice now, I don’t care to have the stuff removed, and I’m also glad that I had them the first time. Stuff on the map helped me to know that I could actually get up there some where. You still have to figure out how to get to those points on the map.
Maybe I don’t care about exploring and I just want more map completion to flip more twilights.
