Just as the title says; would you, as a player, prefer Arena Net to keep releasing buggy Living Story updates every few weeks, or to take a short break to address some of the long standing issues with the game? And by that I don’t mean adding new features people demand, but rather fixing things like balance issues, lag, and some of the many, many bugs that have plagued the game and certain professions (my poor engineer) literally since beta. Once again I’ll pull out my Simpsons clip to illustrate the “dig up, stupid” philosophy I believe Arena Net suffers from.

Put simply I believe that Arena Net has dug themselves into a metaphorical hole by releasing so much buggy and broken content, in hopes of driving up hype for the game and getting more box sales no doubt. And now instead of fixing these problems, they keep trying to get out of it by releasing more buggy and broken content. In essence they are digging themselves in deeper by trying to “dig up” to get out of the hole.

Pretty sure the team that works on the living story isn’t the same one knocking out bugs

On a side note using all caps as a header could get it deleted

If that is indeed the case then it seems they just don’t have a team knocking out bugs.

Different teams

Different teams

I’ll say it yet again….

DIFFERENT TEAMS

In each update we get:

living story
new features
polish
bug fixes
skill tweaks

Just look at the kitten update notes.

Edit: On a side note, now that they have longer development cycles for the LS teams (3-4 months), LS should launch with fewer glitches. However, nothing will ever be completely bug free.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Just look at the number of profession bugs for the engineer and ranger that have existed since beta.

There is no excuse for that.

“This is a legitimate question to the community and topic of discussion about what the community wants.”

No, it isn’t. Don’t presume to speak for the whole community.

“You cannot, no matter how much you want to, deny that the Living Story is consistently buggy and broken, and its mere existence pulls development time and resources away from much needed fixes to existing content.”

The Living Story is not consistently buggy and broken. This is a complete exaggeration. And, they have said time and time again that the Living Story team is different than the team that is working on bugs.

Also, you do no credit to the folks who have probably worked tirelessly (and thanklessly) to troubleshoot and repair bugs and issues since the day the game launched. You act as though nothing has been resolved at all.

The bias in the question, "would you, as a player, prefer Arena Net to keep releasing buggy Living Story updates every few weeks, or to take a short break to address some of the long standing issues with the game? " is excessive IMO.

Personally I am not fond of the LS stuff so I would rather see those man hours dedicated elsewhere.

Complaint thread claiming to not be a complaint thread? Seems if you meant this for actual constructive discussion, you should have worded it a lot different. Reading it myself, you come off sounding like you are attacking ANet, not posing a legitimate question. If you did this with your other posts, no wonder they were thrown in the trash.

As to what you are asking, yes, I’m perfectly content with getting LS updates every two weeks, especially since they aren’t pulling people from fixing bugs and tweaking balance to do so. Honestly, I have had no problems completing any of the LS content in the last two or three iterations, which really tells me that any bugs that exist within them are minor and laughable at best.

As to balancing, balance is an ongoing thing that a developer could waste their entire crew’s time trying to perfect – but some player out there is going to ruin it by making a “cheap” build that everyone else will emulate anyways. That’s the whole point of having updates in the first place. Everyone likes to complain about the Engineer class, but part of that is just how people play it – I have one up to 80, and although I don’t do PvP (which should be a totally different beast from PvE anyways, IMHO), he works perfectly fine in a multitude of formats – but everyone else I run into plays it as JUST a flamethrower, or JUST a grenade. For some of the stuff (like bugged traits), they take care of them as time passes on, just use this little thing called patience.

I’m sorry that you are angry Arkham Creed, that you seem to think you know more about how difficult it is to find errors in code and iron them out without causing more errors, but you need to cool your jets and not be so offensive about it and then you probably won’t have your threads deleted.

And these would be? I don’t play engineer, but I do play Ranger. Nothing is glaringly terrible to me. Please give me a list of things that have been broken since beta. I’m sure more than a few have been at least looked at and tweaked.

Asking the community a question is not not “presuming to speak for the community.” And as far as nothing being resolved, see my above post. Or go take a look at the sixteen thread in the bug forum about engineer turrets. Or about the kit/back item clipping issue that has existed since the first beta and hasn’t even been mentioned, let alone worked on.

This guy does a better job with the turret issue than I ever could. But these are hardly the only problems. But like all of them, they have been completely ignored for a very long time.

Clipping exists in all armors, across pretty much all games. It is minor and there is no easy fix. Kitten, look at the complaints when they tried to eliminate shield clipping. The shield hovers, so armor doesn’t clip, but no people aren’t happy about that. Graphics rendering engines have limitations. Bugs also tend to be prioritized based on their effect on the game. Armor clipping is going to be way down at the bottom of the list. GW1 still has armor clipping to this day….. so you might just have to let that one go…

Possible issues. Some of them may be legit, some of them may be in the process of being looked at or worked on. This all falls under balance stuff, which they’ve said they’re continuously working on.

The turrets not attacking….sounds just like the issue with spirits in GW1, and occasionally minions in both games. They are aware of it. When they figure it out, they’ll fix it. They don’t have a magic wand.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

This still would have nothing to do with them releasing bi weekly updates. Do you think they have the same people designing content that is released every two weeks also working on bug fixes?

Please don’t step on people’s dreams too much. I think some of the designers of this game secretly want to be fiction writers, but alas, they have been fated to work on mmorpgs instead. Oh, tragedy! But never mind, gamers don’t really care for better mechanics, right? So there still an opportunity for writing (bad) literature instead. Hence, they proudly present to you, the Living Story.

When you say that this is what the “community wants,” you make the presumption to speak on behalf of the community. You don’t know what the community wants. This is what you want. So, yes, you are attempting to speak for the community, which is why you are receiving negative responses.

I never said I knew what the community wants. I said it was a discussion about what the community wants. Do you not know what discussion means? It means a mutual exchange of different ideas from multiple parties.

They just need to fix the fricking bugs period. There are bugs left over from beta that Anet just completely ignores, and with each new content update, an ocean of bugs wash over all of the players. I couldn’t play a single event in Southsun because Every. Single. Event. was bugged. There were about 17 events in Southsun at the time, and to have every one of those bugged nearly beyond repair was extremely sad. They just need to take the time to properly test their content before releasing it, and then I’d be happy. As it stands now, I don’t log in anymore because I got bored of the monotonous content and the infinite bugs that always seem to stop me from doing the monotonous content to get my freakin reward.

Hey guys, cool it off would yah? Yes, posing a question does not mean presuming what a community wants. Yes, Arkham phrased his question in a matter that implies the choices are either super buggy content or nothing. It’s a small deal that both of you are blowing out of proportion. Try and get it back on topic eh?

Bugs need to be fixed.

At the same time, the game and content designers aren’t necessarily the people who fix the bugs or do the programming.

Something in the back of my head is telling me that they get people to create tools for them to create content, thus bugs are a result of the tool bugging.

I mean, you don’t even need to be a programmer to be a game designer.

EDIT: Here you go, a job vacancy for a Tool Programmer

As a tools programmer at ArenaNet, you’ll be contributing to our core tools platform, an adaptable framework upon which all of our art, design and programming tools are built.

Tools engineering at ArenaNet isn’t about moving buttons around on a UI, it’s about understanding what makes our developers tick and working with them to create software that lets them do their jobs more effectively.

While this is the job vacancy for a Game Designer

Responsibilities

  • Design and document systems and/or content
  • Implement designs using our in-house tools
  • Collaborate with artists, programmers and other members of the design team
  • Give input on design issues

Qualifications

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to contribute creative and innovative ideas to the game
  • Understanding of how game play affects the end user experience
  • Experience using game level and world building tools (i.e. Neverwinter Aurora Toolset)
  • Strong problem solving abilities

    Desirable
  • Previous game development experience (preferably as a designer)
  • Passion for Guild Wars and a deep understanding of Guild Wars mechanics
  • Creative writing ability
  • Experience with scripting languages
  • Hard-core gamer with extensive experience playing games
  • Experience of working within scrum teams
Life is a journey.
Time is a river.
The door is ajar.
