If you don’t post this thread to your facebook wall, how will all your RL friends know you’re not a noob?
So here’s a fun little game design/social experiment the dev team could tackel this week:

  • Create a new server (not tied to WvW or EoTM) on NA and EU
  • Integrate WvW map mechanics into the cities/forts/villages throughout Tyria. (suggestions on how to do this included below)
  • Tie objectives to Guilds rather than servers (eg; “blahblah” guild captures The black citadel).
  • turn on world PvP. (Skills do damage to all players outside guild/party). -make a toggle to turn the damage to other players off if you can do it in less than 30 minutes. If not then skipit. It’s not that important for this to work.
  • turn on triple exp boost for dynamic events and hearts (to leverage incentive of leveling in open world PvP)
  • Capping objectives for the guild yields Guild exp for the guild + normal exp/gold/ascended mats for individuals.
  • If a guild captures all the objectives within a zone at same time, the bosses get that invincibility buff and the guild gains control of the zone for 24 hours and receives all gold from NPC transactions + matched guild exp for all exp earned by people playing dynamic events and hearts within the zone during this time period. (people will flock to the locked out zones to level and avoid zergs).
  • Add political coloring to maps to show regional influence of guilds.
  • Lions arch is safe zone, all Guards attack players they see pvping. -don’t change anything about guards, just put that into their script and give them a respawn timer +downed state.
  • See how many players guest transfer to the server. If >15% of player population are using the server after 1 month, lock guest-transfers out of capturing (eg; you have to fully transfer to the server in order to cap objectives).
  • Rake in that xfer $$$

WvW mechanics integration
Literally just have an intern go through each zone and put a non-hostile boss NPC at the top of each village that players can take down in groups. Copy/paste the EoTM code so that after killing him, players stand in a circle (like in wvw or EOTM) and it will claim the objective -but for the guild that has the most players standing within the circle rather than the server that does. If there aren’t 2+ people in the same guild, the objective goes neutral.
If the town has a vista or jumping puzzle; have the intern put the boss up there to discourage zerging and confuse the hell out of people. For main cities; wall off the boss in a “throne room” (just have another intern recreate the Iron Throne from King’s Landing in your game engine using nothing but black lion chests -this will take days, so go ahead and just copy/paste the hall of monuments room into the ground below each city and render it in different shades -no one will notice. Oh and don’t tell the intern. Also, just instance it so you can throw up some random wall texture somewhere for players to beat on without having to worry about overlapping polygons in the existing maps) that only members within the controlling guild can enter. Make the walls like SM and put backdoor entrances around main cities for guildies to get into it to defend (think like all the portals in divinities reach).

  • Add a world chat for trash talking, and enjoy the ride.

Final Note
Srsly though, this is how the game should have been designed in the first place (in hindsight). It puts more emphasis on guilds and less on servers (wvw). Which fosters growth of guild patriotism and subcultures. Having a meaningful guild system gives people the opportunity to be a part of organised content in a way that’s prestigious to them. It means more people repping the guilds they worked hard to get into and less people running around with guild tags like “Take Notes Kids Im Going in Dry” or “Ez Pz Lemin Skweezy”. The game is called guild wars and I’m currently in 3 guilds; Meth (guild I made to troll then lost leadership of -but put a bunch of crap into the guild bank that I’m hoping to get back one day), Mist League (used for communication on a project that ended about a year ago), and Bad@ss Diarrhea Bombers; a guild me and some rl friends made to troll, but that I now use to keep tabs on who’s still logging in. Guilds just aren’t as meaningful as they could be.

Also, this took me like an hour to type, so please share it. My self esteem will be seriously hurt if it doesn’t get at least 100k views by the end of the week and I will be forced to throw a tantrum in heart of the mists map chat.

No it shouldn’t. Open world (non consensual) PvP is despicable. It’s just for sadistic people who want to gank, bully and harass others. You will have fun at the expense of others. This is not what Guild Wars 2 is about, this game is about cooperation and helping eachother out.

If this is going to be in a seperate server then fine, but it’s definitely not how this game should have been designed.

What? Did you even read the rest? World PvP can be done right, that’s not even what I was talking about with that statement. I was talking about the aspect of Guilds and quantifiable geopolitical influence + adversity.

GW2 would’ve been the perfect MMO for open-world pvp. It has the lore and factions to pull it off. Sadly, they didn’t want to go into this direction. They wanted a cooperative, open-world, PVE environment instead.

I seriously doubt they would ever change it from that. They want a unified shared experience against PVE dragons. That’s the story of GW2.

I still don’t think that’s very meaningful tbh.. Alliances would be cool, but there’s a big difference between winning a WvW matchup and strategically controlling a part of the actual world that other players interface with and explore in real time. Alliances would just be the biggest guilds on each server playing against the biggest guilds on another server, which is basically what wvw is anyways.

Not likely, I’m afraid. The main PvE server shouldn’t be made into a mandatory PvP zone.
WvW could benefit from some of these ideas, but I don’t want to be forced to PvP.

You do realise that this will turn out into a spawnkittenival where the strongest guild just bash beginners and everyone who was unfortunate enough to die? The game Runes of Magic had several PvP servers and it turned out just like that. When you respawned you could see 10-40 high geared max level players who just waited for you to leave the spawn protection to tear their claws into your flesh. And you as low level with cheap gear couldnt do anything about it. Also there were several guilds ambushing the starting areas to bash beginners.
And about the thing where the guild controling the area would get all the taxes: This will probably lead to thefounding of several big syndicate like guilds who controls great amounts of the map and earn kittenloads of gold. Smaller guilds would have no chance against them since they are not able to generate money and bring in enough people.

Maybe you think Arenanet are equivalent to gods, but it’s going to take them a lot longer than 7 days to rebuild the world like this.

I would have liked to see a version of this in the Mists instead of the current WvW system, but putting that system into the PvE overworld would be irritating for developers and players alike. And improving XP gain is just trolling for easy kills on low-level players – there are enough kittens doing that in WvW already without the need to make it even easier.

Absolutely no PvP in the Open World. I don’t go to the PvP area because I don’t want to PvP. I dabble in WvW, but it certainly isn’t my main focus of play. I think PvP should be kept to its own area(s). Thank you very much.

I would only support open world PvP if there was a PvP flag that is set to Off by default, so players who don’t want to PvP can run through maps unmolested if they prefer to avoid all that skritt.

GW2 should use PvP Servers, forcing PvP Crowd to go WvW and Spvp is really unfair, if you take a look in Tyria, and compare with the Mists, the PvP Player have 20%, while the Pve Player have the advantage of 80% of the game.

This week, lol? All those changes sounds like a 12 month project.

How about starting with something simpler… When a zone (any zone) goes to nighttime, PvP is turned to FFA (event countdown). Come morning, it ends and is PvE like normal. Only guild members would be tagged as friendlies.

This new server would have to be outside the realm of the MegaServer, and could not participate in WvW. I suppose if it was kept completely separate from the rest of the game, it would be fine, but I can’t see the Devs using the resources it would take to implement it.

Agreed, Teq and 3 headed Wurm are hard enough as is, and quite frankly I get more of a rush out of taking down Tequatl or Claw of Jormag than I ever have from PvP. They take teamwork and coordination in the case of Tequatl, and Open world PvP would likely kill most of that. [Can you imagine how easy it would be to hit other players instead of the boss in those fights >.>]

that doesn’t make the idea any better. other games have shown what open world pvp turns into.

people camp low level until those are done with this kitten and show the kittening campers how to play a real high-lvl character…(in case somebody didn’t get it=> they log to their main and camp the campers for an hour or until those realize how bad they are and go offline. at least that’s what I’ve done with those kittens.)

Yeah .. the enormous success of games like AION in the west shows best how the players here always manage to kill these games. Gank all the PvE players until they
leave in frustration .. and then the gankers also leave since they don’t find any easy
victims anymore.

Was also funny when they made such servers in Everquest 2 and the german players
were complaining that we don’t get a german PvP server. So SOE gave them one.
3 month later that server was more or less death, and 6 month later we got free
server transfers because they closes that server.

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

I just don’t see it working out that way. People in smaller, less experienced guilds, or guilds formed for the sake of RP would get the short end of the stick. RP guilds especially, because there are some decent spots outside of the cities that would be a magnet for people looking for easy kills.

I just don’t see it working out that way. People in smaller, less experienced guilds, or guilds formed for the sake of RP would get the short end of the stick. RP guilds especially, because there are some decent spots outside of the cities that would be a magnet for people looking for easy kills.

Honest question here, why would RP guilds choose to transfer to a PvP server ?

Nah. Getting all gold from NPC transations is a weird balance of stupid OP in theory and useless in practice (Aside from salvage kits and harvesting tools, how often do people buy things from NPCs outside of cities?)

I’d rather see all six major cities be safe zones. Additionally, instead of guards attack players they see PVPing, just disable pvp in those zones.

I know for a fact I would not have purchased this game if it had non-consensual open world pvp.

I don’t play on the pvp denoted servers in WoW for that reason
I have no interest in ArchAge for that reason
I have no interest in Aion for that reason

Some of us just don’t want pvp in our pve.

Played Aion for maybe 6 months .. after that the ganking was so bad that i logged out
one day .. and simply never logged in again.
And i will never ever play such a game again

I will however test the Character Editor of Archeage this weekend .. but thats it
more or less .. i know i will never be happy in these kind of games for longer.

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.

That the big thing pvp is a fight ganking is not a type of pvp its more on the lines of killing npc that do not see it coming there just happens to be a human on the other side but its all for not because there is no time for reaction.

The “every one runs stealth” in Archeage removes most real pvp from that game in an open world pvp ideal. That tends to happen in open world pvp games and i bet you could fool most ppl who gank to make others rage with bots that say things that you would think some one was raging would say. A kind of a bot rage to keep the gankers in there place.

The idea presents a PvP server as an option, not as the default for everyone. However, while I could (and would) ignore such a server, were it to be made, I would prefer that the limited resources of the dev team be working on many other things than redesigning the entire game. Open PvP is a game mode that was never designed into the game back in the planning stages. The developers would not just tack a FFA or faction-based PvP option in a quick-and-dirty change onto the existing PvE game. They would — quite rightly — be roundly criticized for doing a half-baked job.

The problem is that the PvE servers and their events were not made to have PvP alongside them. The WoW PvP servers and their quests are made with PvP in mind.
The Guild Wars 2 events are made with cooperation in mind. Imo the events would be constantly griefed and caused to fail. People would not be able to level using the event system.

The only real way for ANet to handle it, imo, would be to release a server without events, which would be boring, or never address the broken or griefed events, leaving them unfixed and people on those servers complaining about neglect and a poor job setting up world PvP.

The problem is that the PvE servers and their events were not made to have PvP alongside them. The WoW PvP servers and their quests are made with PvP in mind.
The Guild Wars 2 events are made with cooperation in mind. Imo the events would be constantly griefed and caused to fail. People would not be able to level using the event system.

Events could be run if the suggestion of having one guild that “conquered” a zone control that territory for 24 hours could be extended so that no PvP is allowed in that zone for the controlling period, or PvP could be optional during the controllling periond if a “protection tax” was paid to the controlling group, etc.

Wouldn’t even have to be guilds, could be just a bunch of pugs following a commander in his squad. You declare which group (guild or pug) you’re associated with in the guild interface. If you want to to Teq, then make sure Teq’s zone is peaceful first.
