So I bought Guild Wars 2 back when it came out. At the time I was playing with several friends from the first game, and we decided on a Europe world to play on.

Now, having not played the game for a couple years, I’m in an odd situation. Some other friends are just getting into the game for the first time, and I want to play with them. But they’re on an America server. Now I can’t transfer to them without a pile of gems I’d rather not have to buy. And they, being free accounts initially, couldn’t transfer to me. One of them has subsequently upgraded to a paid account, but was told the Europe server I’m on is full, so that turned out to be a waste. But having paid for the game years ago, I don’t seem to have a “free transfer” like he does.

I’ve tried looking into the system some, but between changes to gems, “megaservers”, guesting, and a whole host of other updates and systems, I’m not terribly confident here. Am I correct in stating that our only choice is for me to pay $10 – 20 more to play with them? I just want to make sure I’m not misunderstanding some piece of this.

If you delete all of your characters, you can transfer for free.

HOWEVER, birthday presents are tied to character age and the dyes you get for the birthday presents can be several hundred gold worth in cost if you were to buy them on the trading post.

And the only thing that is tied to servers these days is WvW. So if you guys are not looking to play WvW together, then you do not have to worry about which server you are on.

You could just start a free account on the usa servers?

The “free” transfer is only available to F2P accounts that subsequently upgraded to HoT. The reason being that a F2P account doesn’t have any choice which server to join when the account was made, whereas a full paying account does. However, as you’ve found out, it is restricted to non-full servers like everyone else.

That does not work anymore.

If you don’t plan to play wvw it does not really matter what server you choose as its all megaserver instanced. Ofc na/eu makes a difference.

This is a good point.

If your friends aren’t wanting to play WvW with you they can pick any European server, as all the other maps are shared.

I believe it does still work, but you still have to wait the 7 day period in between transfers.

I have deleting all characters on my account before just to do this and I am telling you it does not work anymore.

Some people have a theory that it’s because of the beta characters since being unable to change servers this way only stopped very recently.

Ahh. I see.

What Ayrilana says makes sense. If the demo characters have not been deleted (which seems to be the case, based on gw2efficiency), then there’s no way for someone who’s done the demo to delete all their characters. That sucks for people who wanted to change servers that way right now.

It’s true that the game still “thinks” those characters are on your account. That they still exist can be easily checked via the API or more easily by using a site such as GW2 Efficiency to list all your existing characters.

Perhaps those characters will be auto-deleted on PoF release?

I was thinking about deleting old character and starting on new world.. good I’ve seen this thread.
