Just crafted Sunrise (cos I’m a kitten). Here’s my feedback on it.

The good: having to get WvW rank to 14 forced me to play WvW and I really like it. So that was a pleasant surprise.

The Meh: It’s mostly a gold farm really. And an Ecto farm is you know your dungeons ^^

The horrendous: World Completion.

So World Completion. First off, here’s some ideas for improvements.

1. Hearts could have red rings on the map, marking their effective zones.
2. The mini map could have the same level of detail as the world map.

My advice to people thinking about crafting a legendary: Just buy it instead. World completion is a kittening nightmare. People will say things like “it’s easy” which it is. but it’s also a 100 hour mind numbingly boring grind; it’s the worst seriously. And I know some kittenheads will be like “100 hours!? scoff scoff, I do world completion in 1 hour and 15 minutes using nothing but my rock hard kitten for the keyboard controls” the kittens.

Anyway, that’s how I feel about it. Now to craft Twilight and make $$$ off Eternity

I have yet to craft a legendary but wanted to make Twilight.

Would it be faster to just farm SW for like a month straight and buy it? or doing those steps like world completion and then crafting it?

Yeah, that’s absolutely true. I did it to “save gold” Which I guess worked. It was just alot longer than what I had expected. world completion saves you around 1000g but for 100 hours that’s 10g per hour. From dungeons etc you can expect to clear around 6 – 7 g per hour, maybe 8? once everything is accounted for. it’s hard to know. anyway as a gold saving mechanic world completion is on shaky ground.

If you’re goal driven, world completion is a bear. I never rush it. I do a bit in each zone as I’m passing through. I run through a heart, I kill a few things. If an event is up I do it if it’ll fill in a heart. I get a point of interest near where I’m running in passing.

Often, by the time I get to z zone I need, I’m 80% done with it, then I bang out the rest. The only thing that makes it a chore is focusing on it exclusively.

Hell if I go to Teq, instead of standing around waiting, I do a bit of the zone before it starts. Same with any world boss really. So you get it done while doing or waiting for other stuff.

I got world complete on 5 characters now and no interest at all in any of the legendaries. I find map completion a way to help others while doing a bit of gathering; the keys you get occasionally don’t hurt either. If I could sell the gifts I got I would as they are just using up a slot in my inventory.

I can see how many people would just see map completion as a means to an end, but for me it truly is the journey that appeals to me. Helping fellow players along the way is just a nice bonus.

im some what split on map completion. i enjoy getting the poi’s, vistas, skill points and WP’s but the hearts a just a pain in the. when i do maps i do it in 2 ways, 1st i farm them out map by map doing everything then doing a 2nd pass of the map to get the hearts and my 2nd method is to do it when waiting for a world boss to spawn.

just be happy you doing it now and not back when you had to also finish all the WVW maps.

I enjoy map completion, done 6 myself, 4 hovering around the 70% mark. 4 before they removed WvW elements. The transmutation/BL key is a nice reward, and I gather everything I pass.
I like your suggestions of a heart border and minimap detail. I feel it is unneccesary though.

I love world completion.

I’m sitting at 6 whole completions and on the brink of my 7th. I’ve got quite a few characters sitting around 50% as well. But, I’ve never made a legendary as nothing “2000g”-appeals to me so far.

Your first 100% will always take the longest as you’ve got so much to learn, but that’s half the fun. Now I can do 100% pretty fast on my own as I know how to get to those pesky hidden POIs, or how to do the tasks the most efficiently, and know where to start climbing for the vistas.

If you absolutely can’t stand doing 100%, but want/need it (for the waypoints and hero points), there’s a website that shows you the fastest ways. http://www.postcount.net/index.php?pageid=tdwindex

It’s called Tour de Waypoint. Some maps are a little outdated, but the vast majority are still very useful. I’ve been using it every now and again on my latest characters- I still enjoy world completion very much, but the “adventure” is somewhat less than it once was as I’m so familiar with the areas. I like using the guides as it takes me on a different path than I usually would take, which does make things more exciting. The speed also means I get more rewards in a shorter space of time, but also means I get to experience more map diversity sooner (which I find awesome too- it’s nice to get a change of scenery!)

This being said, I’d find it very sad if a first-timer clung to these guides instead of following their own sense of adventure. However, I know that some people find it so arduous and intensive that they end up missing out on all sorts of activities because they don’t have any of the waypoints nearby (think guild missions/activities).

Not to mention, way more fun than grinding for an endless amount of mats. Plus by mapping you’ll also get quite a few of said mats. I am definitely among those who thinks the world mapping is the less depressing of all these rather grindy steps.

I always thought the opposite-that the world completion requirement was SUPER imbalanced, as you can easily get two gifts of exploration per character while being technically gated “forever” as you farm for the required mats and/or gold (nevermind the precursor.)

Not to be rude or anything (this is meant as advice), but map completion on a lvl 80 in zerk gear shouldnt take more than 50-60 hours at most, unless its your first time (which is understandable). Otherwise, if you do it again in the future, id look into a way to do maps faster, whether its getting a better spec on whatever toon you have for more mobility/burst to do hearts faster (roll a thief imo if you really want it faster), or finding a better route through maps, or something.,

But if youre doing the math on whether or not its affordable on average, i would put it closer to 1000g for 50-75 hours, or 15-20/hr, which is definitely saving money compared to just buying it.

If only they were tradeable, then people who like it could really make money off map completion while people like the OP could save themselves the trouble and just buy it. Maybe next expansion…

i need an hour to complete it.

Else i’m also very slow at mapping and need normally 1 hour for 1% .. when i finally

I don’t mind world completion and it is so much easier now without having to go into those WvW lands to get it, as I did on my first two. I have completed seven characters now and my other eight are in various stages of completion up to Mount Maelstrom onwards. I won’t talk about my second account characters because they are pathetic.

I mostly do it alone but I take it slowly and I am not too embarrassed to hang around some of the more difficult (for me) skill points until someone else shows up.

I am not much interested in a legendary so my world completion tokens are just gathering dust. Maybe one day I will want one, but for now, I don’t care.

Anyway, well done OP on sticking with it and getting through. You may not have enjoyed it but you have earned that legendary.

1st if you want to find hearts talk to scoutys OR just use the ingame map and hover your mouse over the heart icons in the legenda, the ones you didn’t do will light up.

So you craft to get the skin and not the weapon… Your problem, eventually your have a purple armor, purple rings and a purple back and you’ll be thinking to yourself: Why? why didn’t I keep it.

I calculated I earn ~15-30 golds each day…. that’s ~5500-11000 gold a year.. (yes I play each day. In the past 3 years I’have amassed ~35000 gold I guess…
And I spend roughly all of it. I crafted a light ascneded yesterday and and I’m at 10 gold again.

I counted my gear and saw I ‘ve got
~60 ascneded weapons (3000 gold) on account,
5 full asc armors (2000 gold)
5 partial asc armors (1000 gold) and
30 sets of asc trinkets on my 18 characters,
the 18 characters I have are all runed and exotic minimum.
2 legendaries 6000 gold…
16 have all bag slots,
most have salvage o matics, half has perma tools, max bank tabs….
about 60% have had face/hair done
And most other funds have gone into
dyes (missing 10 including the coming halloween dyes),
recipe’s
skins and the like.
And I consume food on every character when doing dungeons, WvW and so on.

I do not think the 3750 gold return on eternity is worth it.

BTW I have 9 times map completion, old style, and a further 6 characters with all waypoints and hero points… It has to be done. -Else they are not usable-… (this also leaves me with 3 characters who do not have full unlocks. (a guard, a ranger and a necro, but I have 2 characters off all classes except engi and thief ready to go instant in their specialisations.

Only exception on my view would be: if you are PvP only. As you get standardized gear it really doesn’t matter if you own a legendary…

23 lvl 80’s, 9 times map, 4ele, 4ncr, 3war, 3grd, 3rgr, 2thf, 2msm, 1eng, 1 rev.
Been There, Done That & Will do it again…except maybe world completion.

A “valid area” ring has been in demand for tasks for quite some time- the argument is that events have an area drawn out for them on the map, so why not tasks?

As for you WP-item, it already exists to some extent. They’re called “teleport to friend” items and are available through the wonderful black lion chests. I have had a few just from the keys I’ve received through PS and map completion and I’ll be using them on low map completion alts to reach far-flung locations.

I like exploring, maby don’t like getting 100% map compleation really but as Vayne said I do like that it exists as I like getting a map done when I have played there enough. I mean I play becouse I like it, I am helping friends, guild mates, leveling characters and doing LS when they are on and suddenly I am almost done with the map and I had fun doing that. That is actually why I havent compleated most town maps with some alts as I have nothing to do there anymore.

I don’t realy get it… Why is it so important to have a Legendary? (I admit I do not like any legendary weapon more than other skins so what do I know)

I am not complaining on people farming for Legendaries or other stuff for that matter but what I don’t get is people complaining about the farming for the legendaries. I have played GW2 since start and I have never farmed anything specific or if I have farmed I havent done it for more than one hour a day just so I won’t get tired of it. Anyway, I have most of the mats to craft myself a Legendary and as soon as I find myself a Precursor (Havent got any yet) I can almost craft one. What I mean is that I play the game for fun and I do the stuff I like about the game so if I like some part of farming I will do that but if I don’t like it I won’t do it so again people who complains about the farming have only them selves to blame becouse they choose to ruin their experience of the game.

I know a few old guild mates who started farming for Eternity as soon as they could and when they where done they where so boored of it and complained about the big ammount of grinding Anet forced them to do in the game so they quit. I mean why do you play a game?

About OP’s suggestion:
1. It is a good idea though I would like an option to turn it on and off becouse it could be alot of clutter on the map.
2. I don’t understand, the mini-map is as detailed as the world map… Is it not?

Yes, you did it all wrong. Then why complain about it, lol?

World completion is meant to be something you do as you go about your buisness in the world. 1% in a half hour there, maybe finishing that last half of a zone before joining WvW, farm materials and do some hearts on the way or taking some waypoints on the way to a guild mission. It adds up fast.

I completed it 3 times now. Sure, it’s boring the 2nd time you do it but it’s also something you can do casually doing other things like watching a movie etc.

Everyone can speedrun but its rarely the most enjoyable way to do things.

Since I have enough characters to do stuff, my newer created ones are left on a map until they have 100%. It’s just as fast as if I had 45% (= most waypoints) – you have to run around the whole map for 100% anyway and the hearts are what take the longest – people rarely kill everything on the way and even if that wouldn’t be enough to complete hearts.
Only time I really completed hearts without intending to do map completion was during Scarlets invasion.

After 4 times map completion, it does get old. About to do the 5th simply due to ocd.

Luckily the classes I absolutely do not enjoy I don’t force myself to do it. Not sure which way revenant will swing. It will be painful if I decide I like the class.

The most brutal map completions are on instant 80 characters. Then again, having a full set of skills makes getting used to the class a tad simpler once the initial shock is over.

I actualy enjoyed getting 100%map, and back when I did it you had to to WvW maps too.
But I also agree after a couple times it’s getting old ^^.
I plan on doing it again with my Rev, but no rush just discover again that amazing world. I think the key world is “no rush” otherwise, I agree 100%map is a bit boring.

PS:
What I find “sad” is that you don’t need to do PvP to get your legendary. I mean PvE is require, WvW too, but no PvP. Imo that’s just sad, I strongly believe you should be “forced” to try a bit of every game mode if you want a legendary item. Or each game mode should have its own legendaries…
FYI: I don’t play PvP a lot, still I think it should be part of the process of making legendaries.

I have 8 map completions so far and the first time, when I went through the zones one by one, region by region was kinda horrible. It just seemed like it dragged on and on and ooon. I do not recommend that method.

For the others and the ones I’m currently doing I usually get all the WPs, PoIs and vistas in one go. Joining events as I run about which clears some hearts. And when I’ve done that to several zones until I’m bored with that I go back to a fun zone. The fun bit can be either that I enjoy the scenery or map chat or find some random players to team up with. Or I jump on another character and clear a bit with them.
I find this way really enjoyable actually and it makes my slight case of ocd purr. XD

That being said, I do understand that it’s not for everyone, just like some can’t stand JPs or hunting for hidden items or PvP or whatever. It’s a facet of the game and not all enjoy it. So it’s too bad I can’t give away or trade the Gifts of Explorations that I have, I seriously doubt I’ll use all of them and they’re just sitting in my bank being useless (can’t trash them tho, am a hoarder as well, lol) when someone else could use it.

Map completion is not hard if you get used to it (I completed it 8x).
In my opinion, the main problem are the quests, WP, PI, and SP which are completely invisible on the map unless you are above it (like the new quests in Plains of Ashford).

They are not saying map completion is hard they are saying it is boring.

It’s okay on the first character but every character thereafter it’s uck, not this again. Not that I don’t think this game is pretty. I just have a high bore level. I spend all my time split between SW and EotM/WvW. PvP is even more boring than PvE. So I’m more of a castle wars kinda guy. I know some probably love map completion.

But for the rest of us: If this was my game and I wanted to make map completion interesting I would hide treasure in random non-respawning spots. Treasure like ascended and no crap loot.

I did world completion once, and that was enough for me. Not doing it again for the gifts, so I’ll be limited to two legendaries. They need to have completion unlock a store which means you can can buy the gifts, at the moment more than one map completion is sadistic for me.

On this topic I have to agree with the OP, world completion is THE most boring activity in the game by far.
In my honest opinion it is the most difficult grind for me to do just because of how dull I find it. I don’t mind farming one bit but when I did world completion for a second time I could only manage one map every two days because I couldn’t motivate myself to do any more even though I am usually capable of champ farming for hours at a time without getting very bored.
What I believe the main issue is with world completion is the renown hearts. Without those I believe world completion would be much more pleasant (I found myself not minding world completion in Orr). In my opinion they take too much time and offer very little in return. My suggestion would be that once you have done all the renown hearts on one character, they are done forever, although you could still choose to do them again on a new character if you wanted. I am not sure of how possible that would be but I do believe that on people’s second and third world completions, when they have already seen the world (which was incredible to see the first time through), it would offer a much quicker way to get extra gifts of exploration after a person first does world completion and is no longer interested in the actual activity but is interested in the end rewards.

It’s definitely easier now that they’ve got the little “go here” suggestion arrow thingy that you can use. I didn’t have that the first time I did map completion. I had to actually look at the map and make decisions as to where to go. Now I can basically let the automated thing tell me where to go and let my mind wander.

It’s a lot more relaxing now.

Still tedious as kitten, but at least it’s not “farm 250 vials of powerful blood, or 3450430430234235 gold.” Plus there’s the map reward, which is always nice.

If I could change anything about map completion, my first thought would be: Don’t count the POIs that are inside of an instance. It’s a pain if you are, for example, a human and you need to track down Charr POIs inside the Charr home in Black Citadel. If you really want to keep them, let people unlock the POI by going to the door or something.

Instanced map completion is just weird and kind of annoying.

Or words to that effect.

consider that you need ~50% world completition anyway if you want to play a character effectively in PvE (being able to do all dungeons with contested WPs too and being able to reach EVERY guildmission spot isntantly…)

you will have to explore most of the Map Zones to some parts anyway… Points of Interest and Vistas are a matter of seconds just like WPs are and there are quite a few Heartquests that can be done very very fast too…
sometimes you can wait to do it and see if a certain event that makes the Heartquest completition very easy pops up…

in the end you just have some more tedious Heartquests left and that is not hard to finish then^^

I aldo recommend everyone to do 100% world completition at least once!
and search in every corner … funny minievents or beautiful scenery can await you in some more or less hidden locations^^
Minidungeons and Jumping Puzzles that you find on your way are a really cool thing to do especially when you discover them on your own

This is the problem of everything being account bound. The gifts should be tradable on TP and everything would be solved.

I don’t wanna touch world completion ever again. It seems like I’m just wasting my life away. I’ve done it 3 times and the first time I was pumped. 2nd time was not so great and 3rd time was obviously a pain.

Since it is so much fun for so many people it would be really great for everyone if people who like it could make some money on gifts and people who detest it could go and earn money by something they actually like doing.

At least I hope they will introduce alternative way to getting scrolls of exploration in the future.

Good God… no.

Never done world completion and fairly certain I never will (unless forced to by ANET). I tend to spend 90% of my time in WvW and to be honest, the only reason I’m even in the open world right now is to grind hero points in a last minute ditch to be able to open the elite specs on as many of my characters as I can on launch day.

I’ve done 6 complete world map completions (I know others with many more!) and a few of those were when we had to map WvW. I think it’s fine. If you ask me every single map, both old and new, should be added (minus HoT maps ofc), including dungeons and WvW. If you want a LEGENDARY the journey should be made legendary.

If you level new characters in a normal explore the world fashion (especially if you do it with alts and different races) you will quickly pick up on how, where and when to do hearts, events associated with them and map completion in general.

It took me 3 weeks to create a level 80 ele, all story missions done (LS2 as well) and full world map completion. Once you pick up on how things work it really isn’t that bad. I do think that Hero Points should be made easier to see on the mini map though.
