Would you play in an underwater map?
I would play an underwater PvP if it was objective based with everyone utilizing the same bar (kegbrawl underwater…aka BLITZBALL)
However, the current underwater combat is incredibly imbalanced at the moment.
“A release is 7 days or less away or has just happened within the last 7 days…
These are the only two states you’ll find the world of Tyria.”
I play a Ranger, so an underwater map would be awesome. And ditto on it being the “closest we’re going to get to flying in this game”. Every time I’m underwater, I sort of pretend I’m either a spaceship or a submarine going pew-pew-pew-pew-pew!
Your elite skills are not locked out, you need to select them when you are underwater XD
Wrong. Some elites can not be used underwater and are locked from selection.
Your underwater skills are available to you.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Underwater
“A player’s skill bar changes when swimming and when entering underwater mode. While on the surface of a body of water, no skill slots are shown; a player has no skills to use but is still vulnerable to attack. Upon going underwater, a new skill bar is brought up as a player’s aquatic weapon is automatically equipped. Each weapon provides class-specific skills for use in underwater. Players can also set different healing, utility, and elite skills for underwater combat. Skills which can’t be used underwater displays a crossed waterdrop in their descriptions.”
I take it you’ve never played a thief underwater before? Thieves have only one underwater elite skill available: Basilisk Venom. yeah. kitten that.
we have to do things others may qualify as “evil”.

Unless something were to change with underwater combat I’d have to say that I wouldn’t play an underwater map if I could avoid it. I hate having to do any of the underwater events now, a whole map may put me over the edge.
They would need to rework a number of skills to become useable underwater. More elite skills for example made usable. Why can’t the ele use the elite where you summon an elemental? Necros can summon their elite minion. Ranger traps could be made useful by making them a sphere around you for example. By reworking skills so they are at least useable underwater would make combat there more appealing.
or how about just making underwater skills equal to the land ones?
Fireball damage – 550
Magma Orb damage – 152(my trident is weaker so lets add that back) 185
Air and Earth looks like they could be okay but to get equivalent damage you would pretty much have to melee everything and even then they still randomly miss for no apparent reason.
I love underwater environments! It would really depend on what type of underwater environment though.
If it was a grim looking place chock full of undead and where you run into a pack of aggressive mobs every 5 meters, then I probably wouldn’t like it. But if it was beautiful and more like the underwater areas in the Kessex Hills, then I would love it!
. . . especially if my Necromancer magically became more fun to play underwater. But I guess I have enough fun on my Mesmer and Ranger underwater to make up for his lackluster performance. xD
I would love to have an underwater zone and underwater new races and perhaps classes. Quaggan and Largos for example.
I would like an underwater zone. I just might not go visit it for fun very often.
Probably very fun to explore once. Probably not much fun to come back to.
I would suggest some sort of underwater “bubbles” or something that you can walk/use regular skills in though.
So it’s still a map that’s completely “underwater” but would have a “lost city of Atlantis” kind of feel to it.
I most definitely want to play in a totally underwater map, but then again I do play necro so I don’t have issues underwater and don’t need to rely on infinite-dodge/evade like some classes xD
~Surrender fiend and you will get an easy death
~I could promise you the same…but it would be a lie…

You must be doing it very very wrong lol. Necro is one of the most powerful underwater classes :-P

It will be really cool. I’d love to try it. But then, I also hope that they will add some “underwater-only” skills that are used specifically for underwater mode.
Underwater combat just isn’t good enough for a full zone, for all the reasons that other people have mentioned. An underwater zone could be puzzle heavy, but it would probably need a new alternative to the jumping puzzle. I’m glad underwater combat is in GW2 but that doesn’t mean I want to see whole zones of it.
I’d only want a fully underwater map if anet finally added all the skills to underwater combat, some just make no sense to be left out.
If my engi can use her kits fine underwater, why can’t other classes at least try to use their straight-firing abilities. My super elixir only works if aimed at a solid surface, but I think that’s interesting for positioning.

Three. Dimensional. Underwater. Maze.
No, kitten no, and are you out of your kittening mind? No. Just….no. What kind of horrible horrible person would even consider such a abomination?
(He’s suggesting I’m a horrible, horrible person… better act the part.)
- Underwater maze now has currents that force players in certain directions.
- Currents will change paths periodically
- The maze now contains doors which can only be opened from one side
- Opening these doors will change the current as well
Everybody, enjoy your new underwater puzzle. We strongly believe that this will provide appropriate challenge for the average player, and will be watching it closely to add more features if necessary.
On my mesmer yes the other classes I play no because of the skills
it has the potential to be cool as long as the combat is kept to a minimum.
Enemy health down to 10%
Invulnerable

Invulnerable
Out of range
Enemy health up to 100%
Player thinks “Fine, I’ll just continue on”.
Nope. Enemy comes back to make you kill it again.
“Argh fine”

I would be fine with it if the skills available to professions underwater was reasonably balanced. Right now it isn’t even close.
I’d love to have one. I bet they could make a spectacular looking environment.

Hmm CoE laser grid + dredge fractal pressure plates + swamp fractal maze. Might as well throw in the underwater fractal’s kraits and the glowing lights.

Y’know, I do a lot of UW combat and your post made me realize I have not seen this phenomenon in a month or more.
I’ve been hoping for one since I learned there was underwater combat. If it’s a visually impressive map and not just seaweed everywhere.
Give it a few fixes. Add some more skills (primarily elites) for some classes that they can use. Perhaps even add underwater only utility skills.
Yes, yes I would play in an underwater only map.
Yep in PvE could be very good if done with a lot of intrinic map subtelties. Because the combat is slowed to give the sense of water movement, the map itself should be very dynamic with things like geisers, volcanic eruptions, tidal waves etc. that unpredictably alter your environment.
Yes, I for one like underwater combat as a side-thing.
Yes!
Definitely.
I love underwater combat/exploration.
Plus…. you add a completely new aspect of another axis with free movement…. making under water caves/temples that much more fun to explore.
Yes, if and only if the zone was well-designed like Vashjir. As in, faster swim speed, visual cues everywhere not to lose focus and a whale shark would be nice.
I would love to see more underwater maps. There are some things I definitely would like to see improved (as mentioned the limited number of elite skills underwater compared to on land). All in all though I really enjoy the underwater combat.
short answer: no
long answer: no, definitively not.
underwater combat is bad due to stupid 3D mob pathing, and underwhelming underwater skills.
a mob can sit on you and hit you and being invulnerable a the same time.
or you engaged in fight, and suddenly, the mob run away , reset HP and after three seconds it comes back full health and attack you.
to summarize the above: NO
Until they fix the ranger, god no!. Underwater combat is painfully boring because half the fun skills get locked out, not to mention nearly all the elites in the game._.
For most of the professions, I dislike the underwater skills compared to the land-based skills. Underwater skills, for the most part, feel underpowered and cumbersome to me. If the skills were updated and the map was actually better than the Southsun Cove mess, I might consider playing one.
. . . especially if my Necromancer magically became more fun to play underwater. But I guess I have enough fun on my Mesmer and Ranger underwater to make up for his lackluster performance. xD

Oh, my Necro plays well underwater, he is in fact my go-to character for the “underwater kills” daily portion. I love how durable he is! But for some reason, I just don’t have as much fun with him underwater as I do my Mesmer and Ranger. I can’t really pin down why though, thus my use of the word “magically” in my wish for it to be more fun. xD Maybe it is the lack of flashy spells like my Mesmer has, lol.
Honestly, I don’t think I play underwater frequently enough and on enough classes to have a firm grasp of which are the most powerful. ^^; For example, I don’t like taking my Ele underwater because he feels too fragile, but I’m sure someone will come and tell me that Elementalists are awesome underwater and I am just doing it wrong. xD

The underwater environment is awesome and I would love to see more reasons to be underwater. Sadly, underwater combat will need to change dramatically before this will be possible. My character, under water, becomes a different character entirely and one who is far less powerful than on land. There are also bugs around underwater like invulnerability, and other issues that have been well documented on the forums. There is a lot of potential there as they have demonstrated they can make a very engaging game world underwater.
You have to agree the underwater game play in this game is well above any other MMO, and with that its understandable that the mechanics aren’t as fine tuned as we might like(especially in PVP). However, from a purely PVE perspective, i’d enjoy an underwater city.
As one of the game’s few underwater legendary owners (soon to have the spear as well), perhaps I’m a bit biased. But yes, I would love an all underwater map or two or three or…
Quaggan Utopia. Make it happen, Anet.
No to an underwater zone for me. Dislike most aspects of underwater fighting. Targeting seems to always be an issue. Example I will be looking at a mob that seems to be clearly in front of me, yet when I attack the mob wont be as it somehow is just above or below but not clearly visably so. Hate moving slower in water. Love the fact that Anet at least does not make us have to breath under water. Simply I do not like the mechanics of underwater fighting.
While I am all for adding things to the game(we all like different things of course) from a personal opinion, I would not like to see developer resources spent on a water zone, but would not object if they did (lol)
Absolutely not. The amount of skills and build diversity does not match what is available on land.
It feels like underwater combat was just slapped onto the game near release, It really needs to be reworked in terms of balance and just how enjoyable it is before they think about adding underwater zones.
For example, they could try adding a new trait page purely for underwater combat and/or add more weapon sets, just to make things a bit more interesting by adding more play diversity.
Though all of this said, I would much prefer Anet just spend their resources on more important things.
Of course! I’d love to have an underwater map in GW2 in terms of PvE. Although placing it in PvP would mean hell (It’s pretty hard to kill players underwater imo)
. . . especially if my Necromancer magically became more fun to play underwater. But I guess I have enough fun on my Mesmer and Ranger underwater to make up for his lackluster performance. xD

Necro is my favorite under water class!
I’d be happy playing an engineer or mesmer underwater. I hate playing elementalist under water. Some professions are just a pain underwater.
Since my main is an Ele, I don’t have a need for an entirely underwater map, in spite of the fact that I find several of the underwater areas in the game fascinating and beautiful.
I used to hate underwater combat, then I started using the right weapons for my character’s class. This highlights a possible balance issue, in that some of the ranged underwater weapons are not so spectacular.
All that aside, with a little polish to the weapon balance, an entire underwater zone would be interesting, but I wouldn’t want to see it put in place until it was a real gem. The art teams have done a lot of great work with various zones, but some of the underwater areas are definitely the top of my list for the eye-candy factor. I’d expect an entire zone to be knock-out beautiful.
No, I won’t. Because it’s too limiting in terms of skill choice. Depending on the profession, up to 50% of my utility skills won’t work. They seriously need to look into that before considering an underwater map.
You know you are tired when you read this title as “Would you play in an underwear map”.
My answer would be yes to both questions =P
If all classes were even underwater i’d play, they aren’t, if they removed all the underwater bugs i’d play it..also as stated limited skills ruin it.
Personally i like underwater adds a new dimension to the game, sadly the game mechanics above aren’t worth doing it…
With how much trouble I have playing underwater?
Hell no.
I’d play it, but it would have to have a good amount of structures in it. My main complaint about underwater is that it’s too easy to accidentally traikittenmobs, and it’s also easy to lose your relative position in a 3D void of empty water. I feel like more underwater structures could help on both counts.
It’s pretty obvious, and nobody’s impressed.
