No, they are there for convenience. I’d rather break immersion than run from Kessex to Cursed Shore, which will take longer than the Arah path I will be doing.

If you don’t like to break the immersion, don’t use them yourself.

Should Guild Wars 2 be merely treated as a casual game instead of a world to explore?

Granted one could not use the way points. But then getting to events and such would be at a disadvantage to those that do.

If every one were restricted from using waypoints. Then every one would have the same chance, events would be made into a epic occurrence instead of another waypoint check list and traveling some where is meaningful.

Then “every one” would be about 10 people, because that’s all that would play the game. Nobody wants to waste their entire playing time running to do a 1-minute event where you only need to auto attack anyway.

As said above, this is a ridiculous question only asked to generate response.

I’d like to get rid of the loading screen, at least inside the map, I think it’s ok when I’m switching to another map. Usually only happens to me in Divinities Reach.

Otherwise I can immerse myself if I want to by not using the waypoints, no need to remove them.

Anyone who wants to get rid of the waypoint because of immersion, does your character run or does he walk?

Naw….I like them, like others have said it makes travel to world bosses much quicker and my immersion is very shallow anyway, but could they reduce the number of waypoints per zone? I really have no problem walking to get to a waypoint so 1 or 2 per zone is ok with me I spend way more on repairs then traveling and normally walk a zone once I get there, zone to zone yeah WPs are a necessary evil to me especially if your traveling across several zones to get to a destination for a boss fight that is on a timer.

Horrible idea. It’s bad enough that we have to pay to use them, isn’t that enough punishment?

I’m not sure what this obsession with removing map travel from games is. Like all those Oblivion or Skyrim mods that remove it too; If you don’t want to map travel, then don’t, walk it instead. Nobody is forcing you to use the waypoints. Will you miss events? Sure, but then people miss them when they do use the waypoints anyway, so.

People just think they want to be old-school and have no map travel, but they don’t really. Look at Dragon’s Dogma; Great game, but the biggest criticism levelled at it was “no map travel” (not practically, anyway) in many reviews, which put alot of people I know off playing it.

Gamers are all growed up now, we don’t have several hours to trek across the world between actual gameplay all the time. We’ve got families and/or jobs that demand alot of our time instead, so when we get home we don’t want to have to waste 2 of our 3 free hours a day actually trying to get to the gameplay…

Even though i understood your point, removing WP wouldn’t be the best solution. Fast traveling between two different point allows access to different part of the games, within a relative short time. Players that have small gaming periods would be harshly penalized if they have to pass most of the time running around to reach the content.

Also, WP works as gold sinks. Although WP costs are too small to really make the difference, the game needs them to relieve the market of the excess generated gold. A better solution is to increase WP costs to account the inflation since the game begun and at the same time making players to think better if they want to spend the silver in that Teleport.

What could be done, is too increase the WP costs in the vicinity of a major event (World Bosses i.ex), when they are active.

Gw2 is too big for it’s complete removal.

I’d like them thinned to somewhere between 25% and of what they are now. Then give us land-based, auto-dismount in combat, can’t be used in cities/caves/buildings, +60% travel speed, mounts.

Replace waypoint goldsink with mount feed.

Waypointing is completely an optional thing. It is your choice to do it, and should not be taken away imo.

If you don’t like waypoints, then simply don’t use them. Use your own two feet instead. No one has taken that ability or choice away from you by making the alternative available should you so choose.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

And you would have hordes of people camping events waiting for it to pop, kinda’ like Teq was the first few days after the rework, if you can’t fast travel to events folks will just camp there…but the added effect would be the end of champ trains.

I know you were sarcastic with this post, but… I did that on several characters. In fact, I’m doing it right now on my warrior. She has now walked the entire Ascalon area, without making use of WP’s (except when defeated and to reach Fields of Ruins that one only connects to Blazeridge Steppes and at the high end of the region at that and my warrior was around lvl25 when she went there). She’s in Frostgorge now and from there will move to Snowden Drifts and then on to the Jungle.

I am known in my guild for completely ignoring WP’s. I am the one that could enter Southsun without unlocking the WP just outside the asuran portal…

I prefer to ignore those portals unless I want to go to a certain map in a hurry. I almost never use it in-map, unless I’m defeated. (exception being Frostgorge, when I’m farming champions for the monthly)

It’s too late to remove WPs, because GW2 is designed with them in mind. However, I would love for future maps to have less WPs.

The Bazaar map did it perfectly. You get a single WP to access it. And then you must explore the map, make use of its mechanics, and work to progress towards a second WP. This second WP is great for convenience, but you still need to explore on foot (or on air :P) everything around it, or inbetween the first and the second waypoints, in a map that has plenty of hidden small locations to explore. It was a beauty to explore and to immerse into, and the second WP felt like a “reward” for progression instead of a tool for excessive convenience.

But then again, the bazaar map was extremely well-designed. Unfortunately for all of us, it was temporary.

I hope future maps have a better balance between convenient WPs and exploration/ world immersion. And to be honest, I wouldn’t mind to see already-existing maps slightly revamped to get more places to explore, more rewards, and less (and more carefully-placed) WPs.

Quoted from a previous post of 3+ months ago:

As I wrack my memory from GW1 I recall my displeasure of; if I wanted to take on a particular boss, lets say Borrguus Blisterbark, who was located at the bottom of Sacnoth Valley, you had to:

  1. Map Travel to Longeye’s Ledge
  2. Run to the gate to Grothmar Wardowns
  3. Run all the way to the other corner of Grothmar Wardowns
  4. Enter the gate to Sacnoth Valley
  5. Run all the way to the other corner of Scanoth Valley
  6. And then finely, I am able to get my whooping from Borrguus Blisterbark

My recollection of that experience was took forever(insert drama here) which meant that I rarely did it.

Waypoints give us options. I can either

  • Gate to the closest city and run the long way to some remote location because I either need to do certain things on the way or I am feeling cheap(most likely the case).
  • Utilize the nearest Waypoint I have open to the area I am looking for, a short sprint and I am there.

Sorry, I don’t want to waste time running from place to place. I already do enough of that in the real world.

And “That Other Game’s” travel isn’t any better. In fact in many ways it’s worse. You log out on one continent and the next day your friends are on another continent and not even close to your hearth location, so it takes 15 minutes of flying/ship-riding to get to them. How is that better?

If you want to run everywhere, have at it. Don’t require that I do the same.

Fewer waypoints in a map I would support, but I’m not interested in mounts or running everywhere.

Consider the help these waypoint provide to you:

1. Gets your friends to you faster, otherwise you have to wait for them to make a run from Frostgourge to you in Cursed Shore (Worst case).
2. You can get to your friends faster to the dungeon they want in a zone you are no where near.
3. If you wipe in a dungeon/fractal, & there is no waypoint, you would then have to start completely over since you have to leave the dungeon to resurrect.

All these points go both ways (you to friends and friends to you).

If you want “immersion” don’t use them like others have said. Make sure to explain that to your friends in the world, in dungeons, and fractals that “immersion” is more important then getting to said place in a timely manner so you do not waste their time.

How would you get anywhere without the waypoints? The only part of the game that would be played were areas directly outside of LA. ie quick to get to.

MAYBE….If you had access to bank vault, crafting stations , trading post, vendors & dungeons without having to travel to a specific spot it would be acceptable NOT to have waypoints.

The open world is way too big. You know how many world bosses would get done if there were no WPs? None. I’m not wasting an hour running from one side of the Tyria to the other just to do an event. Ever. It would be over before I got anywhere anyway. Oh, or maybe I could just make 30 characters, one for each huge map, and park it there. That sounds like fun…. NOT.
