WvW, End of Culling and PVE?!
Asura thing.
Hello.
I just saw the great news for WvW.
But since January Patch that I started to have Culling in PVE for the first times, mainly in Meta Events where even Mobs are Invisible sometimes!
Then, does the end of Culling affects also PVE? Or do we need to get used to “Invisible Events” in PVE?
I would like only to say, that I know Culling is also also about our Computer… but, the game must think in every kind of PCs, not only with high-end Ones.
The initial release of this system will be for WvW only. There are additional complications we need to solve with PvE due to the number and variety of creatures on screen that WvW doesn’t need to account for. Later this year, we’ll be expanding as much of the changes to the PvE open world as we can as well.
Thank you for the quick response Colin!
I look forward to when this can be added to PvE as well
Good news.
Although I still prefer quaggans and rabbits.

Give everyone that worked on this a BIG kiss for me Colin. This is a huge deal!!!!!!!!!
Yes indeed. I hope at least an FIX for the main META events, where after recent updates are invaded by tsunamis of players and guests when these events start. Culling there just destroys all the fun we would possible have with the event.
Asura thing.
Good news for WvW, hope this is implemented fast on PvE. Some META events have been a pain to do. Just the graphics changes done in WvW on PvE to begin would be great, the shear amount of players in some events really take my computer to the max, not only that, guesting on those events furthers the problem. Its goes from my hardware limitations to culling in a matter of seconds.
makes me wonder why it was introduced to PvE in the first place.

Thanks for the info! While I’m sure we all can’t wait for it to affect PvE, as others have said, I didn’t have many culling issues in PvE prior to the January patch’s tweak to culling. I’d love it if that could be reverted so that culling isn’t as bad in PvE.
Good news. Hopefully will be implemented soon in PVE, the amount of deaths due to invisible undead chicken explosions is tragic.
“Later this year, we’ll be expanding as much of the changes to the PvE open world as we can as well.”
Oh cmon you always said that the update for culling would afect all the game…
How am i supose to do Guild missions without seeing half my guild…

Might we eventually get a slider option, to control the number of particles going off for every single spell in the game? I’d prefer not running a slideshow whenever there is a very large battle (and yes, I have a pretty good hardware setup).

^^this^^
It might be easier to dodge massive boss hits if I could see the boss and its tell.
ANet team,
Any idea as to what hardware requirements are needed to render well in WvW with the full res models & character count? I know it’s hard to predict and will depend also on the number of people present in the battle, but I’m curious if you’ve found some reasonable hardware threshold in your testing.
Thanks!
I have concerns about this post.
Mainly because it doesn’t actually sound like culling has been “eliminated”. It just sounds like you’ve found a way to shift most of the burden of how culling is implemented onto the player’s own PC. The “options” presented in that post really heavily imply that the player is going to be expected to figure out how high (or low) their own graphical settings will allow them to go. For example, someone with very high end specs may be able to put their culling limit high (50 people or more), whereas people who are only slightly above the game’s min specs will have to drop their culling limit much lower or else play the game with nameplates only. And, at least to me, that doesn’t suggest culling is gone, only that you’ve found a way to make the player decide how much culling they want to put up with.
I hope I’m wrong but I can’t shake the feeling that something is very wrong with the way this has been presented. Culling really isn’t something that just switches on and off. And this post seems to imply that, rather than culling actually being removed, players will be expected to pick how much or how little culling they want to experience. And I’m pretty sure most people would rather not have any. So I think this may end up not being the wonderful “death of culling” that it’s being presented as….but hopefully I’m wrong.
How’d that work out for us so far?
Now let’s try some ideas that will really work.
Can’t tell if serious. Yes I read the blog post. No this is not the first time they have claimed to have dealt with culling.
“it doesn’t make you spend hours preparing to have fun, rather than having fun”
Guild missions say otherwise.
Sounds like skill lag will be permanant now. Lets hope I am hearing wrong.

I think they’re pretty serious. The main difference this time is they’re eliminating the entire culling system they had before. The changes will make the user’s PC responsible for all the “culling” thus whatever happens afterwards cannot be blamed on Anet’s part.
Of course, weaker PCs will be at a disadvantage. It’s like trying to play Far Cry 3 on a 2007 graphics card. If this ends up being the case, then “too bad so sad, get a better PC”.

We don’t know the extent of this yet because they haven’t made any mention about what kind of performance is expected with what kind of hardware. I actually asked that a few posts above and hope to get a response.
If the answer is “get a better PC,” then one would at least need to know how much PC is enough without overspending.
I think this is an awesome feature they are implementing for WvW, it’ll allow us low end system users to have a much better experience.
I like that ANet is looking to expand it to pve at some point down the road, it is sorely needed, especially on the higher pop servers where dragon fights are just a huge mess for low end users. If I could run fraps I would totally record it, but needless to say, it’s just ridiculous.
I think it’s good times for WvW, and hopefully good times for everyone else later down the road.
You can’t say “buy a better PC”, when you meet the requeriments to play this game.
Even with weaker PCs, if they meet the requeriments to play it, they must have an playable gameplay.
Like I said, this game can’t think only in high-end PCs, when the most of the players for sure doesn’t play with one.
Asura thing.

Wow… of COURE your low end PC will crash and burn if your going to remove culling completely on said PC.
How do you expect a low end PC to load 100 high res players running around AND casting spells? It can’t and it won’t. Your PC will die.
That is the reason why they have other options like “nameplates only” for just this reason.
Your low end PC will still survive the massive graphic requirement in WvWvW while still allowing you to kill stuff with good FPS.

WvW doesn’t have creatures, NPCs, and interacting objects everywhere?
“Culling” happens mostly in PvE during large events, with large numbers of players. Events where most the normal mobs get replaced with a limited amount of event mobs. It’s the large number of players and skills/effects that kicks in the “culling”. Obviously WvW should have more players, but the core issue seems the same.
I’m interested to see how it all goes down. Especially the fact you will have purpose in WvW now. I wonder how that will effect population of the fights. And will we actually see better fights beyond zerg trains.

PLEASE answer this; (If you can)
Will this mean I will be able to see enemies FAR away? When I first heard about WvW I thought "Wow this will be epic, I will see battles going on far far away, but what is the reality today, is that you need to get really close to actually see enemies. I want to be able to see enemy players from across the water in borderlands, but I guess this will never happen…. I want to see enemies and plan what to do with them. I love roaming around in WvW with my glass cannon warrior and take down enemies that are behind the zerg.
TL;DR; Will this let me see enemies across the water in borderlands=?
Thanks.

Every game has culling issues, but they all place it on the players computer. Anet started off trying to limit it themselves, but that proved too problematic cause of size of battles. So yes they are shifting the burden of culling on to the players computer setups and bandwidth, but that is the same as every game already. Such as WoW does this already, and if you don’t set up correctly on your computer you will notice huge lag and invisible enemies. It is impossible to get rid of 100% of culling due to latency issues and rendering issues. The only thing that can be done is Anet is throwing the entire limiting factors that control amount of bandwidth used away in WvW.

You can’t say “buy a better PC”, when you meet the requeriments to play this game.
Even with weaker PCs, if they meet the requeriments to play it, they must have an playable gameplay.
Two questions:
1) Have the system requirements for the game changed as a result of this?
2) What defines “playable?” The minimum requirements only ensure that the game runs, but to what extent? Should you expect to see all character models, or just name plates?
Before it gets out hand, people posting in his thread should refrain from saying stuff like: Yes!!! OMG! OMG! OMG! Culling is gone! NOOOOOO!!! I hate you Anet! You have no live for my low end pc! Make culling go away! And make me play on ALL high settings during WvWvW!
News flash: It doesn’t work that way. Low end PC’s can’t handle the graphical stress in WvWvW. In PvE maybe but not WvWvW.
P.S. I’m using a low end PC.
The player visibilty options should be implemented in PvE ASAP so that we can actually fight in Meta events. That way we can regulate how many players we wish to see without messing with the NPC/Enemies on screen.
If this works as i hope, then it will be the single most important fix you guys have implemented to date. Give the WvW team pat on the back from me!
Now, the thorny issue of the WvW lag…
(edited by Noobix.3958)
One important thing to keep in mind is that this change ensures that all characters within visibility range will be reported to your client. So, even if you choose to turn the WvW character settings down to their lowest (i.e. nameplates only on most characters) while you still won’t see models for every character you will at least see nameplates. In the end it was important to us that no matter what your settings all the players in range will be visible in one way or another.
One of our goals with this patch was to turn off culling without degrading performance. We have attempted to have the default settings mimic the current performance environment as closely as possible, with options to go up or down depending on your machine specs. I strongly encourage everyone to play with the settings a bit to find out what is the right fit for you.

I can completely understand the need to push this off. However…
I would like to know why it feels like we are going backwards in terms of PvE? Before the culling changes that were meant for WvW we PvE players did not notice culling nearly as much (if at all) as we do now. Can we not change the PvE world back to where it was back in November/December? Where we had 100+ people on screen during the Lost Shore events with little to no culling? What exactly changed between then and now to make the game engine run so badly that we are forced to have major culling in PvE?
I just want to add my fuel to the fire here. This culling system needs to be removed from PVE ASAP. I don’t care if I only see skeleton models, when I do zerged events like Plinx in Cursed Shore, I need to be able to see the monsters around me or I can’t get credit for the event, can’ t get loot/XP/etc. While you’re at it, let me turn off freaking spell effects! Implementing the proposed culling solution for PVE should be exactly the same as for WVW just without the high-end character model option which no one needs during zerg events. Nameplates only would be perfectly copacetic.
If this works as, then it will be the single most important fix you guys have implemented to date. Give the WvW team pat on the back from me!
Now, the thorny issue of the WvW lag…
Can’t say anything yet, but I suspect that this will help with the lag in WvW a bit. It also can have the opposite effect if you do not have the settings set to your computer specs.

I don’t think you get my point.
I’m saying that if this change still doesn’t help, it would be time to get a new PC. The only laggy exception to this would skill lag which is caused by the communication between your PC and the servers.

It just can’t, ANet itself can’t say in the BOX when you buyed one thing, and then in the game other thing.
And about playable, it’s just can play, with even with low sets can have enough performance, after January the Dragons for example are a nightmare for low-end PCs that before did thoose events fine, and even for med-end pcs are pushed to their limits sometimes in thoose events.
For me it’s not playable go to an Event like a Dragon, and can’t see not even Players, not even Mobs, I can get the event because the dragon is Up. When it’s over my performance goes Up about 200%.
I don’t care about FPS Drops, I just would like to see things to be able to play that Meta Event without an huge effort for try to see where the mob is, where to go, where to hit…

I’m glad they’re offloading more to clients rather then put it all on server.
And people who are worried… Let’s just say it makes no sense in gaming to purposely make a high-end computer run at the speed of the slowest computer. They have low-res models and nameplates for lower spec computers anyways, so it’s positive for everyone, low or high-end.
The culling should absolutely be taken away in PvE as well.. It’s hopless doing events and such when there are high number of players involved. All of a sudden you find yourself in the middle of a group with mobs, face down in the dirt and you don’t even know what hit you until they start falling dead around you.. It’s hopless! Take the culling away!

Minimum system requirements doesn’t mean its going to have optimal performance. In any games with high-end system requirements, it’s always something to expect. With minimum system requirements, it basically means you CAN play. It doesn’t mean your experience will be the same as others.
Culling in PvE was meant to prevent massive FPS drops during events. It helps a little because in those dragon events, I don’t get as much FPS drop as before, but it does have a bit of an issue of the mobs not appearing. The important thing is that the main boss is visible. Trash mobs come in slower, but for me at least, their drops aren’t great and I don’t mind not tagging every single mob possible.
Still, it’d be nice to see PvE culling improved with this too. This patch is for WvW culling, so I don’t see the point about bringing in PvE concerns. They already said they’re working on it, so let them work! Complaining only makes more noise to filter through, and slows them down.

And these two have demonstrated precisely why I’m concerned. Because people are going to use this as an excuse to blame people’s computer specs instead of the game.
Sorry, but if the computer fulfills the minimum specs advertised for this game, then they have the right to a reasonably functional playing experience, no matter how “low end” you consider their computer to be. Ideal? No, but reasonably good? Hell yes. Otherwise the minimum specs are too low.
And if this fix isn’t actually getting rid of culling even on low end computers, then it shouldn’t be advertised as “the end of culling”.
My comp isn’t too bad in terms of specs, so I suspect I won’t have much of a problem. But I have a feeling that, come patch day, we’re going to see yet another big debate in this forum: this one between players who have lower specs and aren’t getting the “end of culling” experience they were promised, and apologists who will say it’s somehow their fault for buying a computer that only “barely” meets the game’s minimum specs.
In games, bare minimum specs means exactly what it means. It means your game will run on lowest setting, and your performance isn’t going to be optimal. It’s like how you can use integrated graphics to play Call of Duty. You’re going to be at a disadvantage running around with 10 FPS, but at least you can play.
Anyways, the new system appears to have options to scale it, so it’s not something you need to worry about.

Any logical person would realize that it is not truly the end of culling, the same as when a politician says that is going to be the end of a war. Computers that meet the bare minimum will still be able to play but as stated they will run on the bare minimum and won’t even be good at it. In some games such as Battlefield 3 if you have bare minium you can’t even play the game due to Punkbuster kicking you all the time or the mod kicking you for lagging so bad. Minium or refers to the minium specs needed to run the game without it crashing on opening. It does not refer to anything about actually playing the game.

Funny because with an early 2008 video card I can run Far Cry 3 at maximum but not this game; the real fun thing is that I get the same fps either at the lowest and maximum settings.
I understand that there are differences between the engines and everything but your analogy simply does not works well.

What GPU do you have o.O? I can’t run that game at max…
I can max out GW2 though, but FPS can drop to 30 and 15 in rare cases. Also, GW2 is pretty CPU intensive. So at a point, your graphic card stops helping you. This is especially noticeable when you stick a really nice graphic card into a i3 system vs an i5 or i7.

It seems impossible but with a Radeon HD4870 I am able to max out Far Cry 3 (If I remember correctly I only removed motion blur, a filter I personally hate in every game).
Sadly I know that my CPU is what hinders the game to run smoothly (along with Arma 2 with online mission mods like Wasteland)

They added invisible enemies.
They added riding clothes.

Have you not gotten it yet ppl blame EVERYTHING before they will blame them self.
If you played any fps that did not have dedicated servers the host tend to win due to the ping even if it was dedicated servers the ppl with the high end internet would win out more then say a lower end web. At this point Anet is saying that we are going to put out as much as we can on our end we cant lode your pc for you nor can we just simply buy pc for everyone to make sure every thing is 100% fair all the time. There are going to be winner and losers at least this way we are not all losers.
Any way man this is what ppl asked for in GW2 they just do not know the fullness of what they are realty asking for it happen before and it will happen agen over and over. (This is what i try to tell ppl when they complain about things.)
Guild : OBEY (The Legacy) I call it Obay , TLC (WvW) , UNIV (other)
Server : FA
Ahh wow, that’s one tough old card xD. From the number, it’s a high end card from those days.
I would also like to know this, but I highly doubt we will ever get any info on it. My guess would be that we only “perceive” these issues….lol…and that nothing was changed that would effect our game play experiences.
I’d prefer fighting 100 untextured models rather than 100 “pretty” models of which I can only see 20.
