An ANet developer blatantly stated with the trait updates that the five new traits were account unlocks so far as PvP is concerned, because some amount of the playerbase do not keep permanent characters for PvP, but delete and create characters depending on what they feel like playing. That way you wouldn’t have to rebuy incredibly expensive trait manuals every time you made a new character for PvP.

Well they were wrong, had an engineer with all the new traits unlocked, made a new one and deleted the old, and all those traits are locked again, contrary to what the developer stated.

I’m sorry where did Anet state this, blatantly or otherwise. I’ve never seen Anet state this. And I’ve always had to unlock the new traits on each character separately.

They were asked by such a player before the new traits were released, and stated when asked that in PvP they would be per-class account unlocks. Could find it if the search function actually worked…

Yeah haven’t found it but still, looking back it looks like the ‘last word’, what they said closest to the patch release, is that they would be character bound unlocks. But I still cannot imagine why, for PvE it makes sense that they are per character as PvE is largely about progression, but as for PvP, makes no sense at all.

I have no idea if this was “the last word” on the subject or not, but here’s a dev post from five months ago, before the April Feature Pack came out:

All current traits will be usable on a new character in PvP. New traits that are added to the game will need to be unlocked though, similar to how new skills work.

If someone can find a more recent remark on the matter, it’s possible this one is outdated, but if not, it looks like they announced how it would work before the new traits came out, and they’ve worked that way ever since. PvP players might not care for it, but it’s unhelpful to say a dev mislead you without having a reference to it.

Yes, it’s ridiculous that the search feature on the forum doesn’t work. Doesn’t mean we can take “but I remember them saying it!” as evidence.

Also, the fact that I’m treating a dev post as “evidence” might sum up why we don’t get roadmap posts anymore.
