Hopefully they’ll add mounts. The imbecile non-arguments of the anti-mount opposition can go to hell.

They wont add mounts because Guild wars players and developers, and designers have been quite happy without Mounts for over 10 years, there are plenty games with mounts, we don’t need another clone., especially in a game with less open zones.

I’m excited about this and once again, am very pleased with the thoughtful balanced approach Anet has taken.

“These new freedoms might allow you to get to places in these maps we did not originally intend you to see. As long as your explorations remain harmless, it’s all part of the fun!”

No doubt the original game was not designed for gliding, but I think it is a welcomed and fun addition! I love the fact they’ll leave some of the sneaky “you’re not supposed to be here” areas for the people who like finding weird things in game (like I do) to snoop around and access them. Harmlessly of course!

Thank you Anet.

I already mentioned it a few pages back. Even before HoT was released Anet devs were wanting to add gliding to core Tyria as they got in the habit of trying to glide everywhere from playing HoT maps and falling to their deaths. They mentioned it on the livestream the night HoT was being released.

…and instead consider giving some different form of traversing the environment.

The world of Core Tyria is much more flat than the HoT areas, and there is truly not many cases where we’ll actually need it. All gliding will do is give players immunity to fall damage, and mess up the mechanics of many jumping puzzles.

I think what upsets the players, isn’t the fact that they cann’t glide in Core Tyria, as much as it’s “not having any traveling mechanic”.
…that, and them falling to their deaths from Divinity’s highroads because they forgot they can’t glide!…

Instead, if you want to give some cool traversing mastery to the old world that badly, consider giving some sort of mount. Sure, it isn’t that useful for actual traveling with the huge amount of waypoints, but you can think of some clever uses for them besides an increase in speed. Then have one mastery for each of the five locations of the Vanila game (Maguma, Hoelbrack, Kryta, Ascalon and Orr), that gives a different mount that fits the theme of that area, and progressing each mastery would unlock more abilities for that mount.

If you want to allow gliding somewhere, consider just the big cities. It’s a cool place for all traveling methods to be available simultaneously regardless of location and expansion.

No, it isn’t going to mess up many jumping puzzles. Perhaps only a couple. Also, they have outright said there will be “No Fly” zones where hang gliding won’t be allowed, so any jps it could mess up will most likely be no fly zones.

They will probably miss a few places in the beginning or have some bugs that will need to be addressed, but otherwise, no, Jumping Puzzles are not going to be screwed up.

And really, hang gliding is just a lot of fun – and a lot more fun than driving a horse would be, for instance.

Sorry, they have already made it clear hang gliding in core tyria is happening, and frankly, I think you are in the minority of people who DON’T want it.

Gliding was the cheapest easiest way to get the mounted feeling.

There will never be mounts simply because of how much time and effort needed to be put into each race to do so. They can’t even stop horrendous clipping of weapons and armour now, what makes you think they’ll do it with mounts?

Having said that, as long as they keep selling you things you can do in other games for box price, they might try to invest in it in the future. Hell they’re might be more ideas they take from the forums to sell back to you as well.

It doesn’t have anything to do with mounts, it’s all about the fact that it makes no sense to add gliding to the game in some specific zones, get people hooked on it, but then say for some arbitrary reason that you can’t glide everywhere else, plus, gliding is fun. After gliding in GW2 so much I find myself falling to my death trying to glide in every other game I play because I’ve gotten use to being able to do it.

I mean, I get it, it’s second nature to second guess a developer’s motives on doing something, you’re always looking for how the developer might be making more money off the change.. but in this case I honestly think there was no deeper darker motive to it beyond gliding being fun and they wanted to be able to do it everywhere.

Any feature that has to be selectively disabled in specific places is a feature that should not be implemented.

Game Design 101

Consistency is mandatory.

Either you enable a feature everywhere, or you don’t implement it at all. Selective enabling/disabling is disgusting and is game design failure by definition.

Don’t they also teach in gaming 101 to “make the game you want to play”. In that respect the ANET devs wanted to fly around in all of guildwars and not just the jungle so they made the game they wanted to play.

They wanted to keep the challenge of certain areas though (jumping puzzles, fractals, etc). Gliding/flight would break that challenge so it’s disabled in those areas. Makes perfect sense to me.

Also Didn’t know you were one of the 4 big decision makers from World of Warcraft…

That would be the only scenarios I can see you telling ANET how to run their game..especially in a belittling tone as you presented it. Please do link us to a game that YOU created that is doing extremely well in the market place so that we may pay homage to you almighty creator. lol

In general yes, but if it’s a new feature that could break some older areas in the game I’m okay with waiting awhile while the devs make sure the old areas can handle it. It took Blizzard a few years to get flying mounts on the vanilla maps, in fact they had to have a catastrophe in game in order to explain zones being redesigned in order to allow for them.

I’m actually pretty impressed that it’s being done so quickly by anet.

No actually, it’s not at all mandatory. If it was they would not be able to do it. You may not like it but the fact is yes you are severely outnumbered by the people who do want this. When you see people hang gliding everywhere what are going to do, tell them that they’re having badwrongfun?

Fact of the matter is your flat out wrong. I’m sorry to tell you. It doesn’t matter what you think is bad game design , what matters is if the players find its fun and it doesn’t cause any major problem the game, that’s all that really matters. It’s a game, and that’s it.

Badwrongfun and wrongthink – what those of us who welcome this new feature are guilty of. Shame on us entitled customers! We’re not the doubleplusgood Doctorate Game Designers who think games should be difficult, un-fun, grisly, realistic, cold, without flying, walking across the fields as snails kissing the dirt and being grateful peasants, having every hint of a boob censored on armor like the Zodiac, treating a game like work, etc.

I mean seriously could people give the puritan, elitist control freak cliche a rest already? Please? We come to games to -escape- people like that. At least I do lol…
.-.

I suppose ruining WoW wasn’t enough for them, so they come here to chase the “casuals” and “dumb monkeys after shinies” [quote from a player in-game] out who pay money to play games and expect to enjoy them when they log in.

I’ll never guy HoT so it doesn’t really matter…

I wish more of these people demanding that gliding not come to central Tyria had as much common sense as you do to either like it and get it or not like it and don’t.

I for one am extremely excited about this. REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY EXCITED!

There are 101 features that don’t translate, hell, we want them to split more features, like spells so we don’t keep seeing things buffed and nerfed based on PvP.

That is complete BS. I’ve been gaming my whole life and tons of games selectively take features away for certain areas. Single player games usually wrap it in a story element, but it is still there. There are areas in WoW you can’t ride a mount, how is that any different?

Did y’all know you can glide at low level, presumably even at level 1 in the starter instance? I got a low level char inside Verdant Brinks by going through the Guild portal to that map. Once inside there my low level char was able to glide around that map. That means you’ll be able to glide even while leveling up a char as long as you have the mastery line trained already.

what a bunch of gibberish. Gliding is fun period. Tyria outside of hot zones are not made for it to be used well but so what. You climbed that jp to the top only need to back track your steps or use wp out, not any more with gliding.

Honestly gliding should have been put in place in all maps when hot launched. But still unlock it at lvl 80 like normal tho.

Before it was in the would be great to have but don’t expect it for balancing and technical reasons category.

You want a reason? How about placing gliding squarely in the view of PFF players?

Even if that’s the reason it isn’t a bad one. Businesses are supposed to make money in order to pay their employees and if public shareholders. Nvidia for example has 10,000 engineers so in purely engineering cost we can assume their engineer salary budget alone has to be near $1 billion USD since $100,000 is engineer money. They can’t just give away free cards or else they wouldn’t be able to pay all those engineers (besides they have far more expenses than paying engineers as well.)
