someone said that you can get the full ascended armor set with just gold. i know ascended gear isnt sold just for gold but im guessing the person meant with gold u can buy all the stuff required to craft ascended gear, then u craft it urself? is that correct?

No. For weapons/armor you can buy most of the stuff needed to craft it, but some need to be gathered on your own (which is easy, but can be time consuming). Rings, amulets and earrings cannot be bought with gold at all. Of all the ascended gear pieces only some backpacks can be fully bought.

You can’t buy ascended weapons/armor with gold. You can buy most of the components needed (i.e. deldrimor ingots/bolts of damask/spiritwood planks). You need to farm the additional ingredients yourself to make the vision crystals and that would include the empyreal stars (dungeons), bloodstone dust (champ bags) and dragonite ore (world boss events).
