Why when we get an in-game warning that a “new build will be available within the next hour or two” we invariably receive a message no more the 10 minutes later that “Your game will restart in…” !

Why not " A new build will be available in 10 minutes" then? After 15 years of working as a Senior Planner I would say your planning staff needs some education!

Call it a vent perhaps due to my former career (now retired) but I would be able to plan the complete overhaul of a 5 million dollar piece of machinery and have my timing down a lot closer then what their predictions are. Let me see, using their methods of scaling if I scaled their prediction to that 5 million dollar overhaul I would have been off on my predictions by 3 months, 6 days, 5 hours and 23 seconds. Definitely would not have held that job for 15 years.

Nope, time has not changed but accuracy seems to be something that is amiss. What is ironic is that I was doing my daily in Orr when the message first popped up on screen. “A new build will be available ….” yadda yadda. I mentioned in map chat be prepared to relog in 10 minutes. 8 minutes later the “Your game will restart in 3 minutes” came up on screen. If I can predict it within 10 minutes what is stopping ANET from being more accurate in their predictions?

With the message of within the next hour or two, I could perhaps get my gathering done but I would not want to hazard starting an event or going into WvW to get my enemy kills. However with the inaccuracy of their predictions even going out to gather orri is out of the question.

It’s probably just a standard announcement that no one has bothered to edit, because it’s a CYA when they don’t know exactly how long it’s going to take to set up the patch.

“Within two hours” literally means, anywhere from RIGHT NOW! to two hours from now, so assume that it means “very soon” and don’t get too involved in long-term activities.

I have noticed that if I am in an instance (i.e. personal story or dungeon) the game allows me to finish this before kicking to restart. It has never taken me 2 hours to finish something but it has been way more than 10 minutes on occasion. The first message alerts you to this factor, but the 3 minutes message only kicks in when you are in open world (and probably able to relog without too much hassle or losing potential awards). Not everyone gets kicked at the same time, from what I can see. I may be wrong about this but it looks like people are given enough time to finish what they are doing.

Let us assume that you were already in a fractal dungeon when this popped up, even close to the final boss, within the next hour or two suggests I would have time to complete it. 10 minutes later, goodbye.

If you’re already in a dungeon, you get two hours to complete the dungeon. Your point is irrelevant.

Well, I think you can thank modern media, especially tv advertising, for the misunderstandings. “Huge Furniture Sale! Save up to 80%!” usually means that whatever discontinued trash the store hasn’t been able to get rid of is reduced by 80%, but anything worth owning is discounted something closer to 20-40%. But people hear “save 80%” and think that everything is 80% off. Then they get there and they don’t want to feel like they wasted the trip, so a lot of people say, well that couch is 25% off so it is on sale, just not as cheap as I’d like… might as well get it now before it goes back up.

And you often see mail-in rebates on items… people see the discounted price and pay full price up front, thinking they’ll get their money back. Almost everyone who does never bothers to mail in the rebate form, and if you do it can take months to get the money back. The company sells a lot more stuff, plus gets a low-interest loan from the people who bother to send in the form, and their boosted revenue looks good to investors. You get a check for $10 months after you forgot you even sent in the form, or nothing at all.

People just don’t pay attention to the details any more…

….8 hours later…. We have almost finished maintenance, just a few more hours!

if i was anet i would release a patch with the message ‘’around 10minutes 32 seconds and 1 milisecond until an update patch is ready’’

Now that would take a high degree of accuracy!

I was unaware that you have two hours to complete a dungeon if you are in that dungeon when the message pops. Just goes to show I do not run many dungeons. These patches are pre-loaded into the system. Seeing as to how you have time to finish a dungeon if you are in that dungeon it strikes me as strange that in the open world you will never get the one to two hours, but only 10 minutes before you are forced to reload the game. What it looks like then is the message “within one or two hours” is meant mainly for those inside an instance or dungeon but it encompasses those in the open world as well so that one message covers everyone thus saving the need for two separate messages.

Case closed!

I like Arenanet’s quick patches. Coming from Nexon games myself, Nexon would always put out a notice for a 1-5 hour maintenence and close down their game. Then after 5 hours, the game still wouldn’t start. 10 minutes after the maintenence was supposed to end, Nexon would put up a new announcement saying the maintenence has been extended for 1 hour. Then an hour later, they would extend it for another hour, and another, and another, and another. The longest time they’ve ever stringed us along like that was 48 hours. They had posted some 30 announcements saying “1 more hour.” It was terrible. I’ll take Anet any day over Nexon.

Sure, but the warning should allow for sufficient time for you to finish what you are doing 99% of the time. If you start something new when you know, or should know, a new build is coming then it’s on you.

There is no reason why a new build has to be pushed the second it’s ready.

They could announce every 5 minutes for an hour that a build is coming and then push it then.

Anything I post is just the opinion of a very vocal minority of 1.

Wonderful. No good can come from this. I sent Nexon a support ticket July 2009 and 3 months later I got a reply that didn’t help me any. I sent Nexon a support ticket in 2010 and it still hasn’t been answered. What we used to say in Nexon forums was, “If you can’t fix the problem you’re having yourself, you’re screwed.”
