Your leveling secrets
I’d save crafting until later.
I did every starter zone and the next oneforeach race, then crafted my way up with the mats I had. Meant I just had to hit hararhi hinterlands to cap, with the odd wvwvw session when I felt like it.
I’d stay clear of endgame zones to level up in, anything 60+ has no players in it for events, and Orr mobs are just annoying.
I level by not leveling. I don’t think about it. I don’t care about it, particularly.
I run around gathering nodes, seeing that’s around me and responding to it. If a town is attacked, I jump in to help. I talk to NPCs, explore, do my personal story, some crafting…basically a bit of everything.
It’s not much of a system..but I like it…oh yes and I’ve turned off the map markers for zone completion. It just makes the game a whole lot less like a checklist.
1-80 Personal Story + Hearts + Dynamic Events + Map Completion + Gathering + Dailies + Dungeons (on occasion crafting a level or two)
The way I do it
1-80 run around, do events as they pop up, do personal story if I feel like, have fun, don’t worry about leveling..
BTW, the guild I’m on has WvW leveling nights, where people go in a big guild zerg to a specific map to try to turn it and do as much as we can. It’s not unheard of people gaining 6 or 8 levels in one night doing that.
wrapped up in some crazy ritualist hoo-ha from Cantha.
A real grab bag of ‘you can’t hurt me. They’re called Guardians.
How do you level new characters?
My way:
1-30 events, hearts..
30-60 crafting
60-80 WvWmany people got different ways to lvl from 1-80 tell me yours
sorry for my bad english
This is exactly how I did it for 3 of my alts. I did it the long way for the other 3.

mixed, 2 to 80 with various activities both did 2 crafts to 400, one of them I did map completion. 2 I did without any crafting 1 of those did most of the maps the other did not. So anyway you want to play the game you will get to 80. Did dungeons on only one toon and do not do PVP except the 50 kills one month while I did map complete on that toon.
Edit: I stop personal story at or just after claw island now after I did the whole thing on one toon.
If you are focusing on leveling your character as fast as possible you’re running the whole experience of the best thing about this game. The DE are the best feature and I believe leveling to max is already to fast in this game. Take your time when leveling and just play the game and focus on the fun not the xp bar.
1-15 one crafting discipline.
16-40 dynamic events story hearts.
41-60 two crafting disciplines
61-80 Map complete for mount malestrom, fireheart rise, frost gorge sound, straits of devastation
1-80: Crafting.
Seriously though…I think leveling with hearts/events/PS is just utterly broken in GW2. I have had to farm 2-3 zones at a time to actually level my characters. The back and forth in zones is a total buzkill. The events are just too rare and nothing awards enough experience. If there was a constant stream of events it would be one thing. The problem is that events are far too sparse.
I wandered around as a lvl 2 asura thief for 30 minutes in the level 2-3 metrica area without a single event starting. I finally said screw it and leveled in WvW. Got to lvl 10 in 3 hours of WvW.
I have five characters.
One I leveled traditionally, hopping zones to other zones of the same level in order to gain the needed experience.
Second I leveled about 30% by running AC over and over. The rest of it was traditional.
Third I leveled to 20, then crafted to 80.
Fourth I crafted all the way to 80.
Fifth, I’m currently leveling in WvW.
Their “normal” leveling path is just busted…

Why? Why not do the hearts and vistas and pois and do the DEs as you come across them? You wasted 30 mins of actual XP gain from doing hearts. At that level 30 mins of doing hearts & the story would get you to level 4.

1-80:
Clear all starter zones (1-15)
Clear all 15-25 zones
Clear all 25-x zones
So on, and so forth.
I purchase new armor sets at Level 20, 50, 70, and 80.
Basically, start at the bottom of the “pyramid” and work your way around the edges, then slowly work your way up the pyramid. This makes me almost always above the content in terms of level, and in a lot of cases, it seems like downscaling makes it even more of a challenge. This is because the game thinks that at level 45, I should have level 45 armor, but I still have level 20 armor, and downscaling hits me a lot harder because of it. I enjoy this somewhat-forced challenge.
Sometimes I do WvW though, but I don’t think I’ve ever even gained a single level from crafting.
Farm gold on my 80. Craft on my alt. I use Crafting Boosters to save some gold, since I have a ton of them from a Black Lion Chest binge near launch.
When I hit levels where crafting mats sell relatively well, I use an XP booster and Killstreak booster and go farm blue mats. I hate DEs, but do them for loot. I hate Renown Hearts, but sometimes finish them by accident. I actually enjoy grinding mobs, as it’s a decent way to zone out and relax. And I always run with Magic Find gear on my alts, because open world PvE is very easy otherwise.
I try to balance it so by 80 I’ve only net spent a couple of gold on the whole process.
I’ve got 6 80s. Congrats to anyone who has 7 or 8 80s. Leveling is such a bore. Especially now that maw is nerfed…. -_-
