Hi! I’ve played GW2 on 2015 until i’d wear out. i’ve stopped just before the expansion and i’m playing it right now. From what i’ve seen it didn’t quite meet players expectations, but it seems that there are a lot of good feedback regarding recent living story updates like that they’re finally fixing some of the problems the game had. Is it true? What’s your opinion on it?

Personally, I rest on the extreme side of the spectrum of “I love it.”

I deeply enjoyed HoT, and I have lots of fun with pretty much everything A-net puts out. To this extent, I’m not sure how qualified I am to make criticisms.

Could not get into HoT at first, but then I pushed through and had my most serious bout of playing GW2 yet since then. Even got my Astralaria! I absolutely love the gliding, it’s one of those features that renews the game for me.

I am a bit in a rut now, I do not think I will be playing much untill a new expansion hits.

My biggest hopes?

I’m really enjoying it. I stopped shortly after HoT came out. I complained it was too hard. I was frustrated. The truth is, I had one foot in another MMO at the time, and was basically just doing some dailies here and some world bosses with some alts when HoT came around. I had a full set of Ascended on my main, as well as a legendary Bifrost. Since I was already spending more time in the other game, I posted all my ‘this is too hard’ posts, and left, for about 15 months.

Coming back in the second week of December, I jumped into HoT and the story and was found it to be a blast, and couldn’t really figure out what I was complaining about. Now, I don’t know if it has been reduced in difficulty since it originally hit or not, but getting into all the map metas and learning how the maps worked and working on map achievements for points and leveling all the masteries up…it’s been a great time the past few months!

And then when I finished HoT and jumped into LW3:1-3, I was even more excited to see how it was progressing beyond that, and liked how they brought hearts back and turned them into repeatable options. LW3.4 is especially great for me, as I had commented a long time ago how it always seemed like end game zones took you to these goth, depressing landscapes, and how it would be nice to have a high end zone ‘that was like Queensdale, with centaurs and bandits and saving towns and such’.

Well…there I go!

So yeah, really enjoying the game again.

I like the HoT maps for the most part (Don’t care at all for Tangled Depths but I guess 3 out of 4 maps liked is a good number) but really dislike the fact they chose to put some Masteries behind mini games. If I wanted to play a mini game I would download it to my phone.

If you are not yet familiar with the Masteries they are additional points you get to gain more high level skills such as Gliding, Mushroom jumping, etc.

THIS! What really got me back was the Head of the Snake, Divinity’s reach lore and such! It’s good to know more about the places we already know and love. Including this new trend of releasing a map every chapter is expanding the world the way it was meant to be

Most people are going to say they liked HoT because the people that didn’t have left the ones that remained are typically don’t care either way, liked it, or stick to the core maps.

HoT was bad however S3 got me back into the game to a degree the drop in the player base both in game and in these very forums is enough to show that HoT was poorly received. Most of the people I knew left with myself included and some of us came back do to recent events but your still looking at a loss from HoT shown by there quarterly reports as well.

For me HoT itself was a massive boon to the game, more dangerous open world, large sprawling maps with tons of hidden areas, 3D movement, everything.

The downside was the story, the latter parts felt terribly rushed.

Since then it’s sadly been mostly a downhill slide. Utter lack of balancing effort (to be fair, par for the course as it was just as little or less before HoT) coupled with rather meh story patches combines into something which feels as if the cool parts of HoT were one-shot effort.

The strength of heart to face oneself has been made manifest. The persona Carighan has appeared.

I really like HoT, specially gliding, Verdant Brink, Chak, the Reaper elite spec, Taimi, and the emphasis on CC for PvE. I also like the 3rd season of the LS, so far.
However, nothing in this world is perfect, so don’t expect HoT to be everything you dreamed for an MMO.

And you don’t need to do HoT content right away. I did my HoT story only after 6 months of playing around whatever I found interesting.

Basically this; you’ll get good feedback because at this point we’re over a year in and the majority of the reasons why people left have not been addressed in the slightest bit, so for the most part, the people who were upset pretty much all left the game and don’t care.

My play time’s probably down to like 10% of what it was pre-HoT. I’d actually spend $60 a month – the whole retail price of the game – for april 2015-era GW2.
And like many others, my gem purchases are down to literally 0%. Never hashing out cash to ANet again unless they fix what they broke. And we’re looking very far from it.

This is especially apparent in the PvP and WvW communities. The game has never been even close to as dead as it is now in these formats, and these formats are dying very, very quickly as a direct result of HoT.

To balance out Doam’s comment, most people who frequent the forums have something to complain about or are currently bored of actually playing the game and will use a thread title like this as an excuse to gripe =P

My play patterns follow a very extreme pattern of weeks or months of this being the only game I play, followed by months of barely if at all logging in. So while I stopped playing soon after HoT released it was less to do with the release itself and more to do with the fact that I burned myself out playing nothing else for the months of hype leading up to it. I’ve played on and off since then, mostly coming back for the festivals I like and then staying around for some amount of time afterwards to progress the story/my characters before my endurance runs out completely.

Things I like post-HoT:
Gliding around old maps is amazing.
The specialisation system and mastery progression is great (and likely to only improve).
I really liked the HoT story (maybe because I didn’t rush through it but it actually felt quite well paced to me) and the LS3 story is excellent.
I love the LS3 maps and how they intersect with all the old zones.
There’s so much to spend your time doing in-game (HoT zone meta events, the old world bosses and silverwastes, daily activities in LS3 maps, raids and fractal dailies, pvp or wvw reward tracks, map participation rewards letting you farm specific materials if that’s what you like rather than just gold), and ways to get the same rewards via your preferred game modes (eg. the HoT zones’ armour/weapon skins via pvp or wvw reward tracks), meaning that for me (usually splitting my time between pve and wvw) I can change from one method to the other whenever the one gets boring or feels too grindy.

Things I don’t like post-HoT: (keeping in mind that I can feel myself rapidly approaching my burnout point)
The actual HoT maps are a lot less of a joy to run through than the old ones.
The amount of stuff that it feels like you need a group for, in the new maps, (all events feel like part of metaevents, hero points are designed with groups in mind, even wvw roaming people seem to do in packs now rather than solo) means that I can only spend time in the old maps (or now the LS3 maps) during my less sociable moods.

Most of HoT is okay. Not great, but not the worst of the market either.

The gripes i have is simply put content length, and overall game balance (IE just now getting around to splitting per mode) that has left certain classes and builds to rot.

I a bit fan of the HOT content, but then, the open world of Tyria was always pretty easy and my focus has always been on the open world. I never liked the idea of squirreling myself away in an instance to do something challenging. I wanted something like HOT and HOT delivered.

The funny thing is, I didn’t realize what the game was missing until it provided it. I wasn’t sitting around waiting for harder content. But it’s not just the foes that are harder. The maps are more complex and interesting to me. Figuring out how to get around is a pleasure. The kind of thing I used to have to do in older games before everything was an arrow and a green star.

Depends on what you thought the problems with the game were, I guess.

If it was maps or story, then the LS has pretty much come through on that part. My disappointment with HoT was a little more vague. The maps were really good when I was in the mood for them, but I found myself not really in the mood and I rarely go back to them. But hey, that’s just my opinion and not everyone is going to be overjoyed with them. Lots of people thought this was the right direction.

What bothered me most are things that still kind of bother me. Basically a lot of potential and hype that didn’t quite deliver. Scribing was a huge disappointment. They did make some adjustments, but for the most part a profession that excited me pre-launch continues to make me sad with implementation. The economy was thrown out of whack with new mats and the sinks that got thrown at us and is still wonky and inconsistent. The masteries didn’t live up to their potential and became boring gates. (for the most part).

So for me they delivered on the big things – maps are gorgeous and interesting, new specs, gliding, raids, fractal revamps – all the flashy things are pretty cool. It’s the little things that keep adding up that never get addressed that get me down. The game feels like a rough draft that has a ton of potential, but my greatsword still clips on my buttcape and my Charr still has backpieces that hover over her without touching her actual back. HoT just doubles down on all that and adds new unpolished business. But hey, flashy new story map, look over here!

I’ve played a lot less after HoT, and when I do play, it’s mostly PvP. HoT actually made most of all PvE less enjoyable for me. I used to do fractals regularly. Haven’t really touched them after HoT. It just exposed something about GW2 PvE that turned me off…a pity. There’s a lot of good things in this game (some really great things too), but it lost its charm with HoT.

And yet the changes to Fractals are hailed by many as a huge improvement. I’m relatively sure more people do Fractals now than before HOT.

Before HoT you had to commit to a longer four fractal run with a random element. You could get a bunch of crappy fractals and it would suck. Now you have more control over your Fractal experience and they’re more rewarding to play financially as well.

A lot of the improvements to individual Fractals like Cliffside and the Dredge fractal were a long time in coming. The people I’ve talked to like those changes.

In fact, there was a poll on whether to delete the [Desert Borderland] map entirely and it didn’t go through.

To be fair, the vote may have been skewed by a developer statement that if people voted the DBL out, Anet would not attempt to develop any more new WvW maps. I know I voted for retaining DBL for that reason.

That said, I often see people on the DBL, though maybe not as many as on the ABL’s.

A nice big deep skills balance patch would reinvigorate the game for me. Otherwise combat has become a little boring. I am tired of Chrono shatterspam, and the overwhelming superiority of certain traitlines. Ideally a big rejig of traits and skills providing equality between traitlines as well as core/elite specs would encourage me to play the game more.

People seem to not agree at the moment, very divergent opinions. I’d like a more focused reading on the game. The Quarterly Reports are a proof that the game has had a loss, but how much? We can’t measure that very much. Yes, normally less sales, less players, but im sure it doesnt count the F2P part of it. Also, what if we’re seeing the same movement we see on WoW in Years? People flocking in when expansions arrive, play for 2,3 months then slowly declining until the next? Some people just dont care to log in for the LS.
I remember seeing WvWvW with queues most of the time, so why it is “dyeing”?

I’m liking the game more and more with each new part of the LS they are adding now. Mainly because they are finally filling the map in more. When you open your map and see great big blobs of the map grayed out or whatever else you want to call it it’s just depressing for me when I am an explorer at heart.

Story is finally getting back to it’s roots and dealing with the dragons and not this other garbage that the Scarlett distraction brought. But yet at the same time they are also pointing back to GW1 here and there which is also nice. So too are they adding to some of our personal stories by going the Caudecus route. So all in all I think they are going in the right direction story wise as well.

As for PvP/WvW. I think we may soon see more improvements for PvP since they have already started in that direction. So that player base could pick back up again. As for WvW maybe a lot of people just get bored with it. It is after all the same thing over and over pretty much. Also people may feel a little bit disconnected from it now that your side is not just YOUR server anymore but a mix of 3. I have hope that WvW will bounce back.

I think the game is in a good state atm. I’m not taking into account any quarterlies, if they are getting more/less cash per month etc. There are many variables as to why those could be up/down. I am just going by how the game is atm in a playable state. And that to me is that it is still up there and pretty much tops.

Since when did this business of being a hero become being a business?

After suffering under the initial shock of hitting HoT after not learning the basics in a much too easy core game (but later learning them by adapting and finally overcoming the problems), I can’t wait to hit it with another character and see if it goes better this time.

The LS content I’ve played this far had me amazed and I hope that the game will proceed in that direction. Sure, having one currency for each map really is bad idea when inventory space seems scarce, but in the long run, this won’t stop me from saying I like where the game is going in general.

I have not played GW2 much since HoT. I didn’t even finish the story part of HoT, and that is my FAVE thing about playing, seeing the story. I hate the multi-level maps. I hate jungles in general, no matter what game I am playing. (Diablo 2? HATED the third act!) I do like the gliding, I just wish they would realize that some of us are older, have disabilities, and not a lot of time on our hands. So spending a long time perfecting how to get from A to B, or when they make “Challenging New Content!” and then its’ almost impossible to solo anything anymore, it is disheartening.

Plus now storyline is hidden behind raids, which you need specific gear and a high skill level before groups will let you join, unless you are lucky enough to find a training group. A lot of people do not know what was going on in the story for a time, because they didn’t do raids. Sure, you can look up videos on youtube, but you shouldn’t HAVE to, to know what is going on in the game.

Hey people, we dont need to fight. My question was regarding how Hot turned out a year later and what you think of the more recent content and fixes the game has received. So i understand that it is now crawling back from a “not so good time”?

In my opinion HoT is more work than necessary for the rewards you get. Basically outside of gliding, nothing else in HoT was of any interest for me. I did not mind supporting GW2 core and buying gems when I wanted to for things, but for anything HoT I will not spend a penny in the gem store.

Been a fan of most of what HOT has added to the game. The new zones and the new living world release model are both well done in my opinion.

However, a combination of extremely poor balance between professions in PVE (compare a scrapper to a tempest wearing the same stats as an example) and the shortsighted/restrictive raid model have tempered my enthusiasm for the game 50 fold. As a result, I cant really bring myself to support the game financially (buying gems) the way I used to (probably spent more than 5K in the first 3.5 years of the game).

I don’t think the game is irredeemable however. They just need to remember who their core customers really are.

Thanks for supporting the game so well before HoT, it is a shame it’s come to this.

From (my) PVP / WvW view, they have largely corrected their mistakes, something worth mentioning new but has not been added. The PVP still suffers from the boring maps with always three cap points and always 5vs5. No deathmatch, no bigger maps, no arenas. That would be what I would expect from a major expansion. HoT has brought absolutely nothing for PVP players. For the WvW the same, we have the old maps back, now it is just as before. No progress either.

money making is better then at release, new maps are so beautiful i can see how much work is in it. worth the money.

last patch the new zone from ls3 map 4 i got there is that very awful ugly i dont even start doing something there. its big and flat and empty. bloodstone fen is big and beautiful (i play for best graphics also) but got boring when got everything.

second map i didnt like, less bosses and when some boss spawned it already died when i got there. graphics wise nice but also a empty map.

bitterfrost is simple but i like it the tasks there.

4th i already said, nothing for me.

storys i dont care its long and not skipable trash talks from npcs that i dont understand. (hearing) i can read english but dont do. i want the loot and nothing more. the storys are way too long, anet isnt afraid of ppl getting a disconnect.
i remember the drink event in story its 15+ minutes and then i ran back and before swimming to next part i got a dc and i had to do all over again its an instant rage. my internet is very good and then this. i hate it.

and about hot, i liked it in 2016 but a bad thing with me is i get accustomed
(translated this word so if sentence is bad not my faulth) i want to experience things as when i see it the first time. when i got into verdant brink i thought omg so nice. now i rush through it for heropoints only and loot.

Well…

HoT was launched, and suffered from an extremely bad reception, instigated by a feeling of old players they shoudl get more then new players to keep the game alive and a revitalized game, which was compensated with some more character slots.

The story felt incomplete, BUT if we look at storylines in gw2 :
They are allways open ended because the story is not yet done… There are still dragons/gods, however you perceive ’m, alive…

The maps have their own distinct feel and Meta, and even if people find Tangled depths difficult to navigate… it is a distinct map with it’s own set of creatures and habitat. I find the map both impressive and annoying and if I do spend time there I have placws I like (nuhoch and ogre meta especially), i do not really care for the rata novus part… the scar lane tend to be ok…
The gerent fight its nice as well, just a shame we need to wait 2 full hours before respawn.. it’s way too long.

I dislike Dragon Stand mostly due to the forced nature and grindy feel of the rewards… 6 leadership runes require 10-12 runs to aquire, not counting legendaries or other things… which has proved a huge obstacle in my appreciation of the map. The (feeling of) forced grind is horrid.

This said HoT is now 8(10?) maps:
VB Verdant Brink
AB Auric Basin
TD Tangled Depths
DS Dragon Stand
BF1 Bloodstone Fen
EmB Ember Bay
BF2 Bitterfrost Frontier
LD Lake Doric
FT Forsaken Thicket

Maybe the Desert Map was not a huge thing
But I still feel they should have implemented Desert map, The Old frozen map and EotM map for 3 distinct maps… thsi with the EB map would have given 3 complete different maps…

As such the EotM shoudl be changing every week as well, swapping between the 4 available maps…

I however am really happy with the Elite specs, Masteries, new stats, and looking back at this they have made 1 real mistake… They didn’t release balance to each seperate gamemode…
In PvE it’s Warrior,Chrono Druid and Tempest(Sssssss) most other classes are pretty rare. A Guardian, yes sporadically, a Thief yes occasionally .. BUT engi is pretty dead, necro is dead, but cannot be ressurected… nd Revenant started out unbalanced, without usable underwater skills (herald underwater??? nope.)

Limited legendaries… Legendary armors… these are longer term projects then the projects for the players themselves and it will show how fast they will saturate the battlefields…

In all Gw2 was 9/10 game maybe even a 10/10 , HoT was bad at launch, barely a 6/10, but has fought it’s way back and for me is now at a 8/10…..

The game is far from dead. Even if the money is not there it’s not dead yet. If they do well it will rise from the depths like Steve Bubbles. I just hope it will be a good reunion.

23 lvl 80’s, 9 times map, 4ele, 4ncr, 3war, 3grd, 3rgr, 2thf, 2msm, 1eng, 1 rev.
Been There, Done That & Will do it again…except maybe world completion.

Some of us liked HOT from the beginning. Some people found it too hard. The biggest problem HOT had from the beginning wasn’t difficulty for a lot of people, it was the level of grind, most of which has been fixed.

While there are a number of loud voices here on the forums that complain about the difficulty of HOT there are plenty of people who play in those zones almost exclusively.

I guess I’ll put it simply:

If you liked WoW, you’ll love HoT. If you disliked WoW, you’ll want to rethink the expansion.

Basically it provides a massive shift away from Core Tyria gameplay with brand new mechanics, features, and significant changes to the feel of the game that are anything but what you were doing before the expansion. Yes, they might have fixed some of the grinding and even made the content a bit “more” rewarding (despite that all new maps basically have chests of loot everywhere in some capacity), but it isn’t the same game anymore in the content added since the expansion.

And it’s better to think of it as a $60 USD “season pass,” since it appears that a lot of content released with and since Heart of Thorns require it on your account to access. So for new players it might be more attractive since it means access to all current and future content (up to the next one).

A lot of us who are upset with the expansion and the changes to the game are veteran players from as far back as 2012 when the game launched, so dropping $60 for 4 maps (at the time) and elite specs and a lot of rushed content felt … bad. Most of us haven’t really gotten over that or how much it deviates from the game we had spent four years or more playing.

But that’s that, and it really all comes down to the kind of content you like.

Raids, huge-scale chained events, various big fights, and “unlocking” your progression throughout the maps — those can be quite attractive if you like classic action-RPG style gameplay.

However, keep in mind that a lot of points regarding changes to professions and other game modes are still quite valid. Things are not the same anymore, but for those who like the changes, it’s a lot better.

I disliked WoW and love HoT, so I can’t agree with your conclusions.

Edit: To be clear, I play HOT much the same way I played Core Tyria. There are exceptions. A handful of hero points I need more people to finish, which I treat like I did Temple events in Orr. I couldn’t solo those either.

But aside from that, I run around the maps I do events. There’s virtually no change from my playstyle except that I have to be on my toes more.

Excelsior.

I pre-ordered HoT instead of buying Heavensward and thus switched the game and dove right into this Franchise. I haven’t followed the hype and actually did not care that much because I was (and still am) busy in Core Thyria.

But whenever I enter the jungle, it’s like I shift into the 6th gear and pedal to the metal. Everything’s challenging and fast-paced, lots of stuff to do, characters developed (including their dubbing voices) and the HoT bring my i7-3770/GTX970 combo into 80°C ranges.
