Your random rewards for map completion are kitten!
Good coin, good mats, kitten items, on my ranger I have yet to get any medium armor, still alts are getting well geared.
Hmm i guess it is random. I may not be getting items that I can always use but I am getting my level yellows. If I can’t use them… other toons of mine can or I break them down for mats.
I am inclined to agree. I really wish I got items directed towards my character class, and not others. I have actually completed about 70% of the map 100% so far, and have yet to get a single item for my character. I typically get heavy gear for some reason.. I am a ranger.
I agree, the gear in this game is horrid, most of the heart vendors have trash gear, crafting gear is barely on par with gear found around the world, and the greens and yellows you get from completing an area is just random stats with random gear sets. Anet is doing a great job of pushing everyone into the zerg zone (PvP).
Before the “fun police” get here…
I agree, alot of rewards in the game are unbalanced and inconsistent.
Fighting a really hard champion mob with 3-4 other people and killing it after 10 minutes and getting 110% the xp a normal mob gives + a white sceptre feels terrible. Very anti-climactic lol. Sometimes there are champions guarding a small chest but sometimes there aren’t.
Game ain’t about the items or gear, just PvP
Yeah, the random loot for completing a zone is pretty annoying. I would really rather just get crafting mats and T-stones than loot that my character can’t use. I wouldn’t think it would be that hard to at least make the equipment received for zone completion compatible with the profession of the character.
Try doing the wvwvw maps. You’ll laugh until it hurts. As a level 80 I got – from the 3 borderland maps – 2 level 26 green items and 20 leather from each map. From Eternal battlegrounds, they stepped their game up a little and gave me 2 level 36 green items and 40 cotton!
Totally worth it.

What I have been told by the GW fanboys is that this game isnt about loot. It’s about “exploring” and “adventure” and “the experience”. Let’s just face it, this game is a flop and probably only good for the people who like Adventure RPG games like Oblivion, but with a multiplayer aspect.
I say it like it is.
If nothing else I’d like the map completion rewards to be unique (or rare skins) and a couple of level 80 transmutation stones. That way, if nothing else valuable comes from it, people would be able to transmute the gear onto their level 80 stuff and be able to use it for it’s looks. Most of the rewards that you don’t buy, craft or grind for in this game are completely worthless.
There are a tonne of reward systems in the game and the only ones worthwhile are contstantly being nerfed. Everything else is giving people garbage. Even the fanboys stopped defending the loot and reward systems and resolved to argue the game isn’t about loot or rewards. Those things are in the game (for some bizarre reason the fanboys can’t explain) but it’s never supposed to be something you want.
Why give rewards that people don’t want?
Completed Mount Maelstrom and gave me 2 exotics lvl 70++, 40-50 silk or red something mats and 2 transmute stones. It is worth the try!
Recruiting dungeon raiders.

Like saying a FPS is a flop cause it’s probably good for people that like .. you know .. shooting.
Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoy the PvE, but if you like PvE you looooove getting cool rewards when you do something above and beyond. Its such a simple concept that its hard to imagine how it went completely over Anet’s head.
On a side note, the lvl 50 rare gear I bought from the Trade post looked EXACTLY the same as one of the lvl 80 token sets in Lion’s Arch. What??? Are you kidding me with this? Way to not have a clue about progression.

You haven’t played much of GW1, have you?
In WoW you get absolutely nothing for map completion besides your achievement. Here they decided to give some rewards and just because “some” doesn’t mean a perfect combination of items that are completely suited for your class/build/level/needs you people find it reasonable to come here and complain.
I strongly believe that if they gave everything, everyone asked for, people would still find reasons to come here and complain, because they just can’t be happy enough.
Heck this is the first game I ever played that gives you something at all, just for seeing a whole map.
If you take a look at the auction, you could easily post what you received and simply buy an equivalent item for nearly the same amount of cash. If this is impacting you, it is likely impacting everyone else. Thus, trade is a way to mitigate the annoyance at least.
I agree though, I prefer to get rewards that I can use, instead of those I cannot.

No, the world was painfully linear, with only that 1 central city, which turned me off almost instantly. Not my thing. Only thing that impressed me was how quickly the game was up and running once you started the download and the graphic style. Within minutes you were playing, which was pretty astounding.
Some say it’s not about the rewards, but I think even no reward (or at least no equipment) would be better than something crappy. Why not something good, something class and level appropriate? Ok fine, not that big of a deal, but a kitten reward will naturally get kitten responses from players.

I LOLed so hard at this. Good one.

Yes, WOW didn’t give you rewards for map completion, but the system was never in place so you didn’t expect it. You got rewards through other means, quests, ect. Also, its not about perfect rewards. Its about fun. What is fun? Fun is NOT selling stuff you can’t use on the TP. Sorry. Fun is knowing that the rewards MIGHT be better than what you have and if its not, oh well. But the anticipation is always there. In GW, I’ve stopped anticipating positive rewards because they rarely come. THAT’s a problem. Good rewards come from buying stuff after the fact, which is NOT really fun unless hitting search on the TP and clicking “buy” is fun;) Its just a means to an end.
I don’t think anyone is asking to everything, just a reward you can use. How hard is it to code it so random gear that your class can use is rewarded upon map completion, not just random from ALL classes? VERY simple actually. It doesn’t have to be the exact piece you want, just something you can actually wear if you chose to. If it doesn’t have the stats, then you sell, but at least seeing a Sceptor or Dagger for your Necro makes you think COOL. ANOTHER piece of heavy armor after I got rewarded a shield and a piece of medium armor last time is NOT cool.
And NO, I won’t be thankful for the genius that is giving me a random reward when I finish a map=) Its about doing it the correct, fun, OBVIOUS way.
WoW not giving rewards for map exploration is actually a great point.
This game does reward you for it, which means it encourages you to explore. That’s one of the purposes for rewarding players.
If the game rewards you more for doing easy things and rewards you much, much less for doing challenging things, then the game encourages you to not do challenging things and instead do the easy things. That isn’t good.
Saying that this game isn’t about the reward is a terrible argument considering there is plenty of rewards in the game already, which is great, for the most part those rewards encourage things such as exploration, taking on challenges (puzzles), or even rezzing people (xp for rezzing).
However, the rewards are just inconsistent, some aren’t as rewarding as they should be, and some are too rewarding (look at the nerfs Anet has been doing).

Not sure about you, but I already got some very good rewards from map completion. It is exactly as you said: it is something you MIGHT use, just not with the chance you think it should be appropriate for your definition of a fun expected reward.
In WoW it could be the same as asking for every boss, in every dungeon, to drop an item for every player in the group, and an item they could use, not just a random generated item that could just the of a type you can’t use at all.
The chance is there, people are complaining about the chance for the reward to be something usable. It could be greater, yes, although the fact that it isnt, doesn’t make it less fun to me… I’m sorry it does for you. Also, itens aside, you still get a hefty sum of experience and big bag of coins.
In the end it’s all about people trying to have everything they want in the exact form or shape they want, when they want, how many times they want. Is it really this hard to just be thankful for what you get? You could just be getting nothing at all, like EVERY other game out there.

I agree with you about the inconsistence… But I’m sure it will be figured out and fixed accordingly in time.
I have 100% map completion, and not a single time did I get an item I could use Not just because it was low level, but because it was unusable by my profession All went straight to TP / vendor / given to randoms on the map.
What’s the point of rewards, if others get to use them, not you? Why not just give us extra 10-50s per map and drop the items completely?
I agree, the gear in this game is horrid, most of the heart vendors have trash gear, crafting gear is barely on par with gear found around the world, and the greens and yellows you get from completing an area is just random stats with random gear sets. Lol I know I was doing heart quest in the Molten Mountain (level 60-69 zone) or whatever it’s called, I have one heart left and have yet to see a staff or armor drop off vendors (except for level 50s shoes on one -_- ) They disproportionately sell accessories and I’m almost 70 so I really shouldn’t be running around in 50s gear.
How is it in the year 2012 the word “Random” is still a mystery to people?
PS. it does have a use, vendor cash, TP cash, etc.
I really wish quoting wasn’t so bugged; is there something I’m doing wrong?
RE: Guy who said GW2 is a flop; I’m pretty sure there’s a totally gear driven game on the market currently. It’s called D3. Fastest selling ARPG ever, but an absolutely awful game for any non-masochist.
LOL i totally disagree with OP….just love the map completion chest…could be worse and you get nothing. dont be selfish…
Zora
I can remember raiding for weeks, months even, in WOW and not getting anything I could use. RNG is RNG wherever you go.
I don’t have a problem with the reward system for exploration. If I can’t use what I get, one of my alts will, or I can smash it for mats or I can sell it on the TP or I can outright vendor it. I like doing the exploration, maybe that’s the main difference in viewpoints.

I have only completed a couple of zones but the greens I got were a couple levels above the level range for the zone. I saw on youtube that that was the general trend. So lets see some proof you are getting low gear and stop whining.

Yeah ‘cos obviously anything that gets compared to the Elder Scrolls series must be an obvious failure. Riiight. I, don’t even….

Yeah I’m with you on that. Alot of the complaints I agree with for the most part about this game. But I definately trust Anet will figure it out, I’m more than used to MMO releases.

I find it curious you still feel compelled to post on the forums to a game that you consider a “flop.”
Oh wait…there’s a definition for your type…starts with a “t,” I believe.
I think they should just take random gear rewards out of map completion bonuses altogether, and just stick with stuff like the mystic coins, transmutation stones, mats, etc. Stuff that anyone can make use of, so that no one ever feels let down by it. Because that’s exactly what’s happening right now.
The rewards don’t feel rewarding because they don’t exactly apply to the character receiving them. It’s like a blind person getting a photographic magazine subscription as a Christmas gift. Sure, the sentiment is appreciated, but why bother?
Take out gear altogether, then expand the loot pool to include a wider variety of other stuff. What about minis? Or transformation potions? Or even dyes? Stuff that anyone could conceivably use, even if it’s not really that valuable in monetary terms. Then they should do the same with puzzle chests. It’s great to finally solve them and get that achievement, but the chest at the end kind of deflates and trivializes the entire experience. Congratulations! You just spent the last hour or so trying to figure out this insane puzzle and dying a few times through the effort. Here’s a white cloth glove that you wouldn’t use even if you could, and a handful of copper. Thanks for coming out!

Request gear trades in map chat. Sell gear on TP and buy stuff with the money you get from it.
Blacklight gave some interesting ideas. Although I still fail to understand why people would find something completely free a bad idea.
But I wouldn’t mind equipment out of the reward list and just put something else there…
Blacklight gave some interesting ideas. Although I still fail to understand why people would find something completely free a bad idea.
Excellent point. In other games, you get a whopping “achievement” for doing things like completion, and no pay off at all. “Never look a gift horse in the mouth” and all that…..
See, props to Blacklight. What we have there is a well put argument, without a whining self-pity party, followed up with constructive and realistic suggestions.
I like the idea of a dye pack dropping. Switching dyes from account to character was one of their (rare) bad ideas IMO.
