How is Sword/shield Warrior crippled?
On guardian sword is really good, and shield have its use.
On warrior I actually use sword as main hand weapon in a power build, I know it isn’t meta but it is close enough and I have fun with it, and shield is great for soloing.
BTW, ads on youtube (and in most sites) are based on your search history, if you are watching tons of GW2 ads, it is because you are searching a lot about GW2.
EDIT: A build / weapon set not being in the meta is far from be useless.

because you do 12 points of damage and your shield skill runs for 1 second with a cool down of 3 hours not to mention that your shield push isn’t affecting any important opponents???
Dear A-Net,
How comes you advertise shield and sword battle when this combination is absolutely crippled to almost useless ???
lost all credibility there.
champion solo videos featuring sword warriors popping up on top of which they can be a pretty tough combo to deal with in spvp for some professions.

What are you talking about?
Warrior Sword/Shield is very effective. You can block attacks, and daze your target in combat with Shield which is vital and the Sword helps you cripple your target and do bleeding damage and jump at them when they flee. It does decent damage too.
Guardian Sword/Shield is also effective. With the Shield You can give yourself protection and reduce damage you take, Knock back enemies who are getting to dangerously close to you, Absorb Projectiles and heal yourself while the sword does Damage, Blinds enemy, and reflect projectiles as you deal damage to keep yourself safe from ranged.
Your problem is clearly a “Learn-to-play” issue.

Clearly we need to learn to play so you should take your sword/shield warrior and come solo the legendary giant in dry top to teach us.

If it weren’t for its timer and the abundance of players interfering, it’s very likely possible. Just don’t get hit.
Dear A-Net,
these days i can’t anywhere on youtube without getting your ad
in my face.Nothing wrong with it.
But how the heck can you present something that is borderline lying ?
I was witness to an epic movie battle between a player and a giant in Dry Top.
This guy was using shield and sword. How comes you advertise shield and sword battle when this combination is absolutely crippled to almost useless ???
I had a good chuckle at this. Sword/Shield isnt crippled at all.

I used to think (build op, pls nerf) like you, but then I took a nerf to the knee.
it does felt kind of weird, the meta pve offhand is sword for warrior, or torch for guardian.
It dont’ fit traditional fantasy lore really well. But it don’t bother me much for the game play.
sword condition build is actually decent for soloing boss with high health and high armor.

If it just has the standard lineup of attacks that every single giant in the game has, it’d be trivially easy to solo on Warrior, or on Guardian, or on Thief, or on really any other class to be honest. But NO WAY would you run Sword/Shield on Warrior. You’d run Axe/Sword + Greatsword. Additionally, there’s no way you’d run Sword/Shield on Guardian… Shield? I mean SHIELD? REALLY? I’d imagine Guardian would be running either Sword/Focus, or Mace/Focus, although I really doubt the extra block from mace would even be needed and sword damage is clearly superior (but no way would I use Sword 2 for the 10% chance to miss… lol… nor would I trust sword 3 to actually absorb “Throw Boulder”…).
you actually kill faster with sword condition build on warrior if the monster you fighting have high armor.
Looks like the Anet dev is really knowledgeable with meta. (I’m just joking, dont’ take me seriously)
How is Sword/shield Warrior crippled?
Well the sword is a condition weapon for one, that alone ruins it for most of the games group content.

And i “learn to play” how when thrown out of any group ??
Beside that you can’t daze opponents better than veteran.
So shield is worthless against bosses where you actually rely on a shield.
(edited by Kurrilino.2706)
You can’t daze, but you can still block, and in some boss battles, specially if you are soloing, you’ll be glad that you can block some nasty attacks.
Sword/shield warrior IS viable, and don’t forget that you can weapon swap in battles, so you can change the off hand weapon while the shield skills are on CD, I would even suggest going sword/shield + sword/sword, that way you have sword main hand 100% of time and a block in both sets.

Could be worse.
Could be Hammer.

How is Sword/shield Warrior crippled?
You use skill # 2…..oh…how is the BUILD crippled? Never mind……
Seriously, just because a Build / weapon combo is not as effective as you would like it to be does not make it “crippled”. I’ll be the first to agree that if you are looking to out DPS another Warrior, you shouldn’t be using a Shield build of any type, but do you actually EXPECT a shield to out damage another off-hand weapon or 2 handed weapon? Not really a reasonable expectation.
Fate is just the weight of circumstances
That’s the way that lady luck dances
How is a sword/Shield warrior or guardian bad? they can be very good, especially in PvP.
Sword/Shield is not about doing a lot of damage. It has some CC, Defense and buffs.
Sometimes you just fight things for flashy rather than for overall effectiveness. Why does an Ad need to use the meta for fighting a boss anyway? If someone wants to hack away at a giant with a sword, what’s the problem with that? It’s possible and reasonably effective with the right build.

To me, the trailer displaying the giant, was pretty much: “Oh s**t” moment…
Perhaps intended, as the giant is quite powerful, even if it uses too simplistic and cheap 1-shot attacks…
As it’s too hard compared to other bosses available (kitten kittenty “Super easy mode” designs for casuals, to point that you can just stand-spam-DPS majority of PvE, even with full lvl 80 fine gear), it’s not been killed for long time…
I rarely do PvP or Hard PvE, unless it’s organized.
why would a warrior need a shield in this game.. they have better magic than an earth mage, pfft..
Shield warrior is OP, how many other infinite blocks for 3 seconds on 20ish seconds cooldown are out there?
I main a warrior with GS meta but I use Axe/shield as alternative, why? because instead of extra dps and dodging out of danger I prefer to raise my shield and hold my ground in the fauces of a fire breathing dragon, how cool is that?
Guardian with shield on the other hand its a huge disappointment. I love shield 4, it fits the concept but shield 5 its nice to see and a huge meh after used.

X/Shield allows you to play it safe. Going full burst mode even in pvp doesn’t really work anymore.
A skilled player with Sword/Shield can outplay high damage dealer or even a small group of other players.
What’s more, people say that Warrior’s sword is only good for conditions.
Well, bleed is good and work for condition stacking, but doesn’t mean it’s not suited for being used as pure power weapon.
Main Hand Sword(Warrior):
- good mobility with leap – allows to chase fleeing target
- cripple condition – allows to cripple target that would like to flee, or limit it’s mobility
- good single hit high damage skill – it’s slow and requires -50% of target
As many would say, Axe is far better blablabla, then I must say that it takes a considerable skill and experience how to handle sword in main hand, to be able to deal with opponents.
Notice that Warrior’s Sword leap is much bigger than Guardian’s leap on greatsword.
Shield warrior is OP, how many other infinite blocks for 3 seconds on 20ish seconds cooldown are out there?
Since you asked:
Shield Stance is a 3 second block on a 30 second cooldown.
Gear Shield is a 3 second block on a 20 second cooldown.
Counterattack is a 3 second* block on a 15 second cooldown.
Riposte is a 2 second* block on a 15 second cooldown.
*Works if you are not within melee range of an enemy.
While Counterattack and Riposte do not work exactly like Shield Stance does, it will accomplish the same thing in many scenarios, with the benefit of having a much shorter cooldown. This is one reason why it is worth considering using sword off-hand instead of shield.

I don’t think your point was proven. Riposte is a multiblock. In fact, it’s impossible for it NOT to be a multiblock when fighting a giant, because of the standard skill lineups that all giants seem to share. The duration of Riposte is long enough to block anything you could possibly want to block from a Giant; the extra duration of shield block thus does not matter at all. Shield 4 is totally worthless versus a champion or legendary mob. Sword 4 is not. Sword is clearly superior, and there is absolutely no reason to ever run a shield for the block in PvE unless you’re already also running offhand sword, and need even more blocks.
Furthermore, the person you’re responding to forgot about Shelter (same cd as shield block), and Guardian’s Focus Block (36s cd traited), the first one being actually infinite, and the second being effectively infinite when fighting a giant.
You wouldn’t ever run /Shield when fighting a giant. You’d run */Sword, and Greatsword. And by "", I mean “Axe”, because it’d be stupid to run MH Sword or Mace.

I purposefully did not include Shelter to stay with weapon skills only, but it is indeed my favorite healing skill!
And when in melee, you have other means of damage mitigation. You know, dodge? I’m not saying Shield Stance is bad, but there are worthwhile alternatives out there worth trying out.

First, not really if you can intelligently kite during the time you’re blocking. Virtually every melee attacking mob in the game is absurdly easy to kite and take zero hits from.
Second, are we not talking about soloing a giant with nothing else around? Because I’m pretty sure that’s what we’re talking about in this thread.
Which if these giant attacks spawns adds, much less adds that melee? Throw Boulder? Stomp? Stamp (Double Stomp + Punch)? Roar (Weakness + Fear)? None of the above?

Nobody is saying shield should be meta, of course you will dodge before using a shield, and again, my build is GS meta… but for fun sake? I will raise my shield and stand my ground on melee against immense waves of catastrophic destruction
