HoT is the game. The original base game is no longer produced, so from ArenaNet’s perspective, HoT is the only GW2. If a new player chooses to buy the original game from a 3rd party however, then yes, HoT is a separate purchase.

New player do not have the 3 year of game play older player have. New player do not get to do living story season 1 older player had. New player have to buy living story season 2 if want to play it. New player do not have all achievement and other thing older player have. Core game include free so new player do not have to pay two time to play game. It is marketing to get more new player to buy game and not have pay twice for it. Did you make complain when core game was for sale for 10 and older player pay full price?

If you have much time can read all about this argue here.

It’s a very fair business practice that makes the game better in the end for everyone. But the fact they intentionally changed existing content from vanilla gw2 and made it so you now required HoT to play/do it… WAS NOT FAIR PRACTICE. Content you paid for originally is being barred from you, and you have to pay again to have it? That’s not what gw1 or 2 was about.

As someone who bought both, naw. The $50 was worth it to play for three years, and the $50 for HoT has been worth it… mostly. I’m still salty about some of the changes they made.

I main Ele and Necro, though I have an alt of each profession at level 80.

The base game should not be available to buy at all now. ANet should have asked retailers to withdraw this from sale but it’s still available as a stand alone purchase even though its free to play!

If someone bought the game a year or more before HoT came out and spent less than an average of $10 a month buying gems, they got their $40~$60 worth and $50 for the expansion is perfectly justified.

If they spent more than $10 a month and treated it like a voluntary subscription fee in an effort to support ANet, then the expansion is overpriced.

Wait, I thought that was only the case if you bought HoT prior to its release? I thought that once HoT was released new players would have to buy both?

Was that changed or am I just misremembering?

the business model is like this : whenever a new expansion comes out, the previous game content (including expansions) will become a Core content and will become a “play for free” version.

veteran players will need to buy the new expansion to upgrade the game, and the new players simply have to buy the latest expansion to get all the latest game content.

Yeah, it should’ve cost anyone new to the game $100 to join. And then when the next expansion comes, $150, and so on. I mean, WoW players must be losing their minds that everything up to Mists of Pandora is costing only $5.00 (+15 sub). I mean, what a rip!

Combining GW2 with HoT is a marketing ploy to get players who bought the original GW2 to shell out another $50+ for a moderate expansion pack.

And then also pay for any Living Story sections that came after this section if you want the achieves, mastery points or rewards tied to them and a character slot if you want a Revenant.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

Not kind of. It is. And the “core” game is still available as the F2P version, although supposedly slightly limited features from the original paid version.

(Marked section for emphasis)

And yet vet players who DID pay for it already have to pay again to be able to play HoT. How is that NOT a middle finger to them? Achievements that mean little in the overall game play content, so basically, veteran players have to pay let’s say $100 to get the same thing as the people who now just pay for the HoT expansion pack.

It’s how they plan to market the game from now on. New expansion bundled, with core and any old expansions for free. It’s a way to keep new players from having a high pay wall keeping them away from buying. Too high a price and new players will stay away, leaving the game with a shrinking population of veteran players. Most new players aren’t going to want to pay full price for a several year old game and expansion, not with other new games competing for their money. ANet decided the best way to attract them was to only charge them for the expansion. Now maybe they could have made two versions, one slightly cheaper but they didn’t. Those who it bothers enough should simply wait till it goes on sale and get discount that way.

If you’re not comfortable with their business model of old content free and new expansion not, then you’re always going to be unhappy with it every time they have a new expansion.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.
